In orchard or crop-growing environments, pesticides are sprayed using various nozzles to prevent pests and improve productivity. Nozzles currently in use are restricted for use in multi-purpose environments, thus, it is necessary to develop new nozzles. In this study, new two-phase nozzles are proposed to improve the performance of the nozzle (flow rate, spray angle, spray particle size). The performance of the two-phase nozzles are predicted through the CFD analysis and the performance of the nozzles is compared with the experiment. The experimental results showed that the proposed two-phase nozzles are available at relatively low operating pressure condition and are capable of extensive spray particle size control. Thus, the proposed nozzles are expected to be available in various orchard environments.

This paper address technical issues in calibrating discharge coefficients of sonic nozzles used to measure the volume flow rate of low vacuum dry pumps. The first challenging issue comes from the technical limit that their calibration results available from the flow measurement standard laboratories do not fully cover the low vacuum measurement range although the use of sonic nozzles for precision measurement of gas flow has been well established in NMIs. The second is to make an ultra low flow sonic nozzlesufficient to measure the throughput range of 0.01 mbar-l/s. Those small-sized sonic nozzles do not only achieve the noble stability and repeatability of gas flow but also minimize effects of the fluctuation of down stream pressures for the measurement of the volume flow rate of vacuum pumps. These distinctive properties of sonic nozzles are exploited to measure the pumping speed of low vacuum dry pumps widely used in the vacuum-related academic and industrial sectors. Sonic nozzles have been standard devices for measurement of steady state gas flow, as recommended in ISO 9300. This paper introduces two small-sized sonic nozzles of diameter 0.03 mm and 0.2 mm precisely machined according to ISO 9300. The constant volume flow meter (CVFM) readily set up in the Vacuum center of KRISS was used to calibrate the discharge coefficients of the machined nozzles. The calibration results were shown to determine them within the 3% measurement uncertainty. Calibrated sonic nozzles were found to be applicable for precision measurement of steady state gas flow in the vacuum process. Both calibrated sonic nozzles are demonstrated to provide the precision measurement of the volume flow rate of the dry vacuum pump within one percent difference in reference to CVFM. Calibrated sonic nozzles are applied to a new 'in-situ and in-field' equipment designed to measure the volume flow rate of low vacuum dry pumps in the semiconductor and flat display processes.
The characteristics of center-driver jet pump which have multi-nozzle were studied in this research. Jet nozzles are connected outside of the bend rather than inserted in the bend in order to transport solid materials or fish without any harm. Jet pumps having one nozzle, two nozzles, four nozzles, and sixteen nozzles were tested in this study. The efficiencies and performances of jet pumps were studied for several nozzles shape, for three different mixing chamber shapes, for two suction area shapes. All the efficiency curves for these cases are presented in this paper.
This study was conducted to find the design factors of spraying device of the boom sprayer for low volume application. Specific objectives of this study were 1) to select proper nozzles for broadcast spraying and row crop spraying by the nozzle spray characterisic experiment, and 2) to investigate the coverage characteristic of rice plant at the row crop spraying. The results of this study are summarized as follows. (1) From the tested results on the droplet diameter spectrum and spray pattern the standard flat-fan nozzle and drift guard nozzle were judged as appropriate for the broadcasting. Even flat-fan nozzle showed similar span values to standard flat-fan nozzles and drift guard nozzle : however, the nozzles were found to be inappropriate for broadcasting because of their spray pattern. Hollow cone nozzle showed relatively small span values and uniform spray pattern. (2) For the upper and lower sides of the rice plants, coverage rates of even flat-fan nozzles and hollow cone nozzles were maximum at the second row, but decreased rapidly after the third row. For the middle side of the rice plants, coverage rates of them were maximum at the first row, but decreased rapidly. When one nozzle was tested, C.V. values were in the range of 90~160% and 60~160% on entire heights of rice plant for even flat-fan nozzles and hollow cone nozzles respectively. C.V. values at other parts were poor. Spray coverage rate at the middle part was improved by overlapping the nozzles whereas there was little difference on the upper and lower part of rice plants. (3) For spraying lower part of rice plant between rows, even flat-fan nozzles and hollow cone nozzle were judged as appropriate, but in order to ensure the uniform coverage, distance between nozzles, recommended to be less than 90cm.
An experimental study was performed to investigate the liquid jet breakup of a circular nozzle and elliptical nozzles. Furthermore Numerical simulation was attempted to investigate the internal flow structure in the circular and elliptical nozzles. This study showed that the disintegration characteristics of the liquid jet of elliptical nozzles were much different from those of the circular nozzle. The liquid jet issued from the elliptical nozzles became more unstable at the same injection pressure. Surface breakup was observed at the jet issued from the elliptical nozzles with the increase of injection pressure. The disintegration of the liquid jet of elliptical nozzles was related with the internal flow structure which is revealed from the numerical simulation.

Characteristics of twin spray ejected from two swirl spray nozzles were studied experimentally. By using a patternator for measuring volumetric flux of drop flow at various locations inside the spray, variation of the twin spray pattern along the axial direction was studied with changing the injection pressure and the distance between the nozzles. The general findings from the experiments are as follows: (i) as axial distance from the nozzles increases, the spray pattern in x-z plane which contains both nozzles changes significantly. On the other hand the spray pattern in y-z plane which passes the midpoint between two nozzles remains almost unchanged at outer region as axial distance and injection pressure vary; (ii) at the downstream of the twin spray with spray interaction, the maximum volumetric flux in y-z plane (q$_{max}$)$_{y}$, has tendency to become larger than that of x-z plane (q$_{max}$)$_{x}$, due to a characteristic(hollow cone shape) of the constituting swirl sprays, and this trend is pronounced at higher injection pressure since the cross-section of each single spray remains hollow at the longer axial distance from each nozzle with higher injection pressure; (iii) at a certain axial distance from the nozzles, the cross-sectional shape of the boundary of the twin spray tends to be circular similar to that of the single spray with twice the flow-rate, and that distance is not proportional to the distance between two nozzles; (iv) though there are some collisions between droplets from each nozzles of twin spray, in present experimental range, the flow pattern of gas including the entrainment effect plays the key role in spray interaction.n.ion.n.

Flow distribution of fuel nozzles for a combustor in a micro gas turbine is numerically investigated. The fuel supply system for the present study has 12 single nozzles with a diameter of several hundred micrometers. A uniform temperature distribution of a combustor outlet should be achieved for maximizing the lives of the turbine blades and nozzle guide vanes. For this, it is very important to uniformly supply fuel to a combustor. In order to investigate flow distributions of fuel nozzles, numerical models for fuel nozzles are made and solved by a commercial code, ANSYS FLUENT. An effect of a fuel nozzle diameter and fuel flow rates on flow distribution of fuel nozzles is numerically investigated. As a result, non-uniformity is increasing as a diameter of a single fuel nozzle increases. Finally, an appropriate diameter of a single fuel nozzle is suggested.
Reduction of yam hairiness by nozzles in ring spinning and winding is a new approach. Simulation of the airflow pattern inside the nozzles provides useful information about actual mechanism of hairiness reduction. The swirling air current inside the nozzles is capable of wrapping the protruding hairs around the yam body, thereby reducing yam hairiness. Since production rate of winding is very high and the process itself increases yarn hairiness any method to reduce the hairiness of yarns at this stage is a novel approach. A CFD (computational fluid dynamics) model has been developed to simulate the airflow pattern inside the nozzles using Fluent 6.1 software. In this study, both S- and Z-type nozzles having an axial angle of 500 and diameter of 2.2 mm were used for simulation studies. To create a swirling effect, four air holes of 0.4 mm diameter are made tangential to the inner walls of the nozzles. S- and Z-twisted yams of 30 tex were spun with and without nozzles and were tested for hairiness, tensile and evenness properties. The total number of hairs equal to or exceeding 3 mm (i.e. the S3 values) for yam spun with nozzle is nearly 49-51 % less than that of ring yams in case of nozzle-ring spinning, and 15 % less in case of nozzle-winding, while both the yarn types show little difference in evenness and tensile properties. Upward airflow gives best results in terms of hairiness reduction for nozzle-ring and nozzle wound yams compared to ring yarns. Yarn passing through the centre of the nozzle shows maximum reduction in S3 values.
This study was conducted to find design factors of spraying device of the boom sprayer for low volume application. Four types of nozzles(standard flat nozzle, drift guard nozzle, even flat nozzle, and hollow cone nozzle) were used for the spray characteristic experiment. Spray patterns of the nozzles were distinguished by the nozzle type, spray distance, and spray direction. The flow rate was proportional to the square root of spray pressure in all nozzles. Increased nozzle height improved spray distribution at reduced pressures and/or increased spacing. Distribution tended to improve as pressure increased within the range of pressures used for fan nozzles.
Numerical simulation has been performed to investigate the mist flow characteristics through the fire suppression nozzles for the design purposes. The commercial softwares, FLUENT and the fire dynamic simulator, FDS with the proper modelings were chosen as the numerical tools. In order to find optimal conditions in sense of the main performances of nozzles, the spray characteristics were analyzed both inside and outside of the nozzles. Geometric factors of the injecting orifices, i.e., diameter and chamfered angle were chosen as the simulation parameters for design application. From the present numerical results, 1.0c nozzles, whose orifice-diameter was 1 mm, having the chamfered angles were shown as the best performance of the fire suppression.
