  • A wave buoy commonly used for measurements in marine environments is very useful for measurements on the sea surface wind and waves. However, it is constantly exposed to external forces such as typhoons and the risk of accidents caused by ships. Therefore, the installation and maintenance charges are large and constant. In this study, we developed a system for monitoring the sea surface wind using marine radar to provide spatial and temporal information about sea surface waves at a small cost. The essential technology required for this system is radar signal processing. This paper also describes the analytical process of using it for monitoring the sea surface wind. Consequently, developing this system will make it possible to replace wave buoys in the near future.

  • Massive numbers of users of social networks share various types of information such as opinions, news, and ideas in real time. As a new form of social network, Twitter is a particularly useful information source. Studying influence can help us better understand the role of social networks. The popularity of social networks like Twitter is primarily measured by the number of followers. The number of followers in Twitter and the number of users exposed to news media are important factors in measuring influence. We chose Twitter and the New York Times as representative media to analyze the influence and present an empirical analysis of these datasets. When the correlation between the number of followers in Twitter and the number of users exposed to the New York Times is computed, the result is moderately high. The correlation between the number of users exposed to the New York Times and the number of sections including the users on it, was found to be very high. We measure the normalized influence score using our proposed expression based on the two correlation coefficients.

  • An iris image pattern positioning with preserved edge detector, ring zone and clock zone, frequency distribution and overlay matching is presented in this paper. Edge detector is required to be powerful and detail. That is proposed by overlaying Canny with LOG (CLOG). The two reference patterns are made from allocating each gray level on the clock zone and ring zone respectively. The normalized target image is overlaid with the clock zone reference pattern and the ring zone pattern to extract overlapped number, and make a matched frequency distribution to look through a symptom and position of human organ and tissue. The iterating experiments result in the ring and clock zone positioning evaluation.

  • Generally, it is difficult to find constant patterns on identifiers in a container image, since the identifiers are not normalized in color, size, and position, etc. and their shapes are damaged by external environmental factors. This paper distinguishes identifier areas from background noises and removes noises by using an ART2-based quantization method and general morphological information on the identifiers such as color, size, ratio of height to width, and a distance from other identifiers. Individual identifier is extracted by applying the 8-directional contour tracking method to each identifier area. This paper proposes a refined ART2-based RBF network and applies it to the recognition of identifiers. Through experiments with 300 container images, the proposed algorithm showed more improved accuracy of recognizing container identifiers than the others proposed previously, in spite of using shorter training time.

  • This paper describes a systematic way of identifying the horizontal coefficient of consolidation for clayey soil under undrained condition and silty soil under partial drained condition by applying an optimization technique to the early part of dissipation data measured from the self-boring pressuremeter strain holding test. An analytical solution developed by Randolph & Wroth (1979) was implemented in normalized form to express the build-up and dissipation of excess pore pressures around a pressuremeter as a function of the rigidity index. Horizontal coefficient of consolidation was determined by minimizing the differences between theoretical and measured excess pore pressure curves using optimization technique. It was found that the proposed optimization technique can evaluate in-situ horizontal coefficient of consolidation rationally, which is similar with that obtained from the piezocone dissipation test. Furthermore, proposed method can evaluate appropriate coefficient of consolidation for soil under partially drained condition.

  • Traditional procedures for DNA microarray data analysis are to preprocess and normalize the gene expression data, and then to analyze the normalized data using statistical tests. Drawbacks of the traditional methods are: genuine biological signal may be unwillingly eliminated together with artifacts, the limited number of arrays per gene make statistical tests difficult to use the normality assumption or nonparametric method, and genes are tested independently without consideration of interrelationships among genes. A novel method using average rank in each array is proposed to eliminate such drawbacks. This average rank method monitors differentially regulated genes among genetically different groups and the selected genes are somewhat different from those selected by traditional P-value method. Addition of genes selected by the average rank method to the traditional method will provide better understanding of genetic differences of groups.

  • Contents 1 In this paper a machine vision system for recognizing and classifying the patterns and marks engraved by die molding or laser marking on glass panel of computer monitor is suggested and evaluated experimentally. The vision system is equipped with a neural network based pattern classifier and searching process based on normalized grayscale correlation and adaptive binarization, which is applicable to the cases in which the segmentation of the pattern area from background using the ordinary blob coloring technique is quite difficult. Inspection process is accomplished via the way of NGC hypothesis and ANN verification. The proposed pattern recognition system is composed of three...

  • Generalized order statistics (gos) introduced by Kamps [8] as a unified approach to several models of order random variables (rv's), e.g., (ordinary) order statistics (oos), records, sequential order statistics (sos). In a wide subclass of gos, included oos and sos, the possible limit distribution functions (df's) of the maximum gos are obtained in Nasri-Roudsari [10]. In this paper, for this subclass, as the df of the suitably normalized extreme gos converges on an interval [c, d] to one of possible limit df's of the extreme gos, the continuation of this (weak) convergence on the whole real line to this limit df is proved.

  • Whole genome sequencing (WGS)-based noninvasive prenatal test (NIPT) is the first method applied in the clinical setting out of various NIPT techniques. Several companies, such as Sequenom, BGI, and Illumina offer WGS-based NIPT, each with different technical and bioinformatic approaches. Sequenom, BGI, and Illumina utilize z-, t-, and L-scores, as well as normalized chromosome values, respectively, for trisomy detection. Their outstanding performance has been demonstrated in clinical studies of more than 100,000 pregnancies. The sensitivity and specificity for detection of trisomies 13, 18, and 21 were above 98%, as reported by all three companies. Unlike other techniques, WGS-based NIPT can detect other trisomies as well as clinically significant segmental duplications/deletions within a chromosome, which could expand the scope of NIPT. Incorrect results could be due to low fetal fraction, fetoplacental mosaicism, confined placental mosaicism or maternal copy number variation (CNV). Among those, maternal CNV is a significant contributor of false positive results and therefore genome wide scanning plays an important role in preventing the occurrence of false positives. In this article, the bioinformatic techniques and clinical performance of three major companies are comprehensively reviewed.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the syllable structures of ten Korean numeric sounds produced by ten subjects of the same age. Each sound was normalized and divided into onset, vowel, and coda sections. Then, acoustical measurements of each syllable were done to compare the ten sounds. Results showed that there was not much deviation from the grand average duration and intensity for the majority of the sounds except the two diphthongal sounds on which their boundary points varied among the speakers. Some syllable boundaries were quite obvious while others were ambiguous. There seemed some tradeoff among the syllable components depending on their acoustic features.
