  • It analyzed the supply status of fine aggregate and find the point of issue related alternative fine aggregate through researches and interviews. The conclusions of the study are as follows. 1. Ready mixed concrete manufacture used crushed fine aggregate (15.5$\%$) and recycled fine aggregate (1.5$\%$) for alternatives aggregate than 1.3$\%$ in 1991. It is not allowed to use a recycled fine aggregate in ready mixed concrete, but they used it. 2. All alternative aggregate are satisfied the Korean Standard, But they showed low properties of mortar compared to when it replaced with natural fine aggregate. So, it is needed to make another special Korean Standard to use alternative aggregate in normal concrete by mixing method to recover the workability and compressive strength.

  • In this study, in order to utilize waste concrete powder(WCP) which is occurred in manufacturing high quality recycled aggregate as an admixture for self-compacting concrete(SCC), the properties of cement paste, mortar, and concrete that were mixed two types of WCP, 928 and 1,360 $cm^2/g$ of surface area, were analyzed. As a result of experiment, we have found that WCP was a porous material with angle. When WCP was utilized as an admixture for SCC, its flowability and viscosity increased in proportion to the increase of a replacement ratio, and that a replacement ratio of WCP was proper within 15%. The compressive strength at 28 days mixed respectively with WCP2, 15 and 30%, showed about 36 and 28 MPa, and it showed a similar trend with a function suggested in CEB-FIP for the relationship of compressive strength and elastic modulus. According to the results, it is judged that WCP2 can be utilized as an mineral admixture of normal strength SCC.

  • This study was the contrast of the compressive strength, the tensile strength, the reducing ratio and the flow of mortar using dispersing agent and high fluid admix. 1. The admix ratio of chemical admixtures espressing maximum strength appeared the same result high fluid admix SP was 0.6%, the dispersing agents LG and C211 were 0.2%, SK was 0.3%, C376 was 0.5%. But two or three times more than standard quantity made the strength's fast lowness, which influenced bad to wateriness and retard the soli-dification. 2. When proper quantity of chemical admixture was used, the increment of compressive strength was as follows. High fluid admix SP was 40.7% and the average increasing rate of dispersing agents(C211 was 19.5%, LG was 19.1%, C376 was 17.9%) was 18.7% more than normal mortar in the codition of 7 days. Also, in the condition of 28 days, high fluid admix SP was about 24.4% and the average of dispersing agents(LG was 21.1%, C211 was 16.4%, SK was 11.1%, C376 was 7.6%) was 14.1%. 3. When proper quantity of chemical admixture was used, the increment of tensile strength was as follows. High fluid admixture SP was 26.6% and the average increasing agents(SK was 16.0%, C376 was 14.7%, LG was 10%, C211 was 5.8%) was 11.6%. Also, in the condition of 28 days, high fluid admix SP was 16.5% and the average increasing rate of dispersing agents(LG was 19.1%, SK was 10.6%, C211 was 10.1%, C376 was 8.7%) was 12.1%. 4. As for the reducing ratio of each dispersing agent, he flow of mortar was less than the slump of concrete. That is; the reducing ratio of concrete was 15% adding each dispersing agent, but the reducing ratio of mortar was in the range of from 5.8% to 13.5% in 1 : 1 mixture, from 7.6% to 14.2% in 1 : 2, from 9.5% to 18.8% in 1 : 3. 5. The fluidity of each chemical admixture was as follows. High fluid admix SP in the condition of 1: 1 and 1 : 2 showed the best result than other dispersing agent and 1 : 3 showed the same result like other agents. Therefore these good dispersing agents were suitable in the prepact concrete construction using intrusion mortar.

  • As a part of the movement of natural resources conservation, there have been doing many recycling research works for obsolete aged tire, wasted plastic materials, etc. The purpose of this experimental study is to develop glass concrete by recycling wasted glasses as a cementitious constituent in concrete. First of all, the optimum replacement ratio of powdered waste glasses(PWG) can be determined through pilot compressive strength test on normal and high strength concrete cylinders, which have been made in various mix proportions by changing the replacement ratio of PWG. Then, further tests have been done to figure out mechanical properties of most desirable glass concrete with optimum replacement ratio of PWG, such as static modulus of elasticity, compressive and tensile strengths, flexural strength. On the other hand, the alkali-silica reactions by the mortar-bar method(KS F 2546) have been experimentally doing in various grain sizes of PWG, since the alkali in the cement has a tendency to react with the silica in the PWG. In can be confirmed from the test that glass concrete can have better workability than concrete with silica fume, and they are alike in compressive strength. It is concluded that wasted glasses can be used as pratical additives for economic and environmentally friendly concrete.

  • Recently, the reuse of coarse aggregate derived from demolished concrete was introduced into practice with two environmental aspects: protection of natural sources of aggregate and recycling of construction waste. However, recycled aggregate has been used for the very limited application such as subbase material for pavement and constructional filling material because it was considered as low quality constructional materials. In the present study, in order to examine the possibility that recycled aggregate can be used for concrete mixing, we conducted various experimental tests to identify mineralogical, chemical and mechanical properties of recycled aggregate and to determine the workability and mechanical properties of recycled aggregate concrete (RAC). The cement paste and mortar contained in recycled aggregate significantly affect the basic mechanical properties of aggregate and the workability and mechanical properties of RAC. However, RCA mixed with the proper replacement ratio of recycled aggregate shows the comparable compressive strength and freeze and thaw resistance to those of normal concrete. Therefore, it is considered that recycled aggregate can be widely used for concrete if the cement paste and mortar can be efficiently removed from recycled aggregate and/or if the effective replacement ratios of recycled aggregate are applied for mixing concrete.

  • Alkali-silica reaction (ASR) is a chemical reaction between alkalies in cement and chemically unstable aggregates and causes expansion and cracking of concrete. In the Present study, we studied the effects of metakaolin, which is a newly introduced mineral admixture showing excellent pozzolainc reaction property, on the inhibition of ASR. We prepared mortar-bars of various replacement ratios of metakaolin and conducted alkali-silica reactivity test (ASTM C 1260), compressive strength test and flow test. We also carefully analyzed the mineralogical changes in hydrate cement paste by XRD qualitative analysis. The admixing of metakaolin caused quick pozzolanic reaction and hydration reaction that resulted in a rapid decrease in portlandite content of hydrated cement paste. The expansion by ASR was reduced effectively as metakaolin replaced cement greater than 15%. This resulted in that the amounts of available portlandite decreased to less than 10% in cement paste. It is considered that the inhibition of ASR expansion by admixing of metakaolin was resulted by the combined processes that the formation of deleterious alkali-calcium-silicate gel was inhibited and the penetration of alkali solution into concrete was retarded due to the formation of denser, more homogeneous cement paste caused by pozzolanic effect. Higher early strength (7 days) than normal concrete was developed when the replacement ratios of metakaolin were greater than 15%. And also, late strength (28 days) was far higher than normal concrete for the all the replacement ratios of metakaolin. The development patterns of mechanical strength for metakaolin admixed concretes reflect the rapid pozzolanic reaction and hydration properties of metakaolin.

  • The central objective of this study is to curtail the leakage of mortar or cement paste, often resultant of ill-constructed formwork, by implementing thixotropy in the formulation of high-fluidity, standard-strength concrete. When such concrete is utilized in smaller scale construction projects, instances of formwork gaps due to suboptimal construction precision may lead to significant leakage of mortar and paste, a problem not typically encountered with traditional slump-flow concrete. In this investigation, Polyvinyl Alcohol(PVA) and borax are incorporated into the concrete mixture to induce thixotropy. The experimental design includes varying methodologies for integrating PVA and borax, while assessing alterations in diverse concrete performances, including thixotropy and leakage reduction potential that simulates formwork gap conditions. Under the experimental conditions defined within this study, it was found that replacing, rather than merely adding PVA and borax, aids in averting water addition via suspensions. This approach yielded promising results in terms of concrete properties and proved efficacious in stemming leakage in concrete possessing sufficient thixotropy. Notably, when a 6% PVA suspension was substituted, a significant reduction in leakage was observed. Consequently, it is projected that construction quality can be ensured, even with lower precision formwork, by applying thixotropy to concrete through the use of PVA and borax.

  • Direct shear tests are perfromed for artifical joint models made of cement with 25 types of different strength and roughness. The tests consist of the multi-stage test which is a common test method for a single joint plane and the test method suggested by ISRM. Then, not only the differences of friction angles between the two test methods are compared, but is the effectiveness of the multi-stage test investigated. The average of friction angles measured from the multi-stage test is $6.4^{\circ}$ lower than that from the ISRM test. Although the strength and roughness of samples vary, the differences of friction angles between the two test methods are constant. The relationship between the shear stress and the normal stress measured from the multi-stage test is well correlate with the Patton's equation. Whereas, the Barton's equation is best fitted with those measured from ISRM test.

  • In order to quantify the anisotropic properties of rock included joints and shear behavior in joint surface, the mold is Produced for rock joint surface using gypsum Plaster and Peformed for replicated joint models made of cement mortar. Rock sample is measured using mechanical profilometer before testing and their result is expressed quantitatively. The statistical parameters and the fractal dimension by fractal theory for roughness is investigated its coordinate value for numerical process. The shear strength to the shear displacement in low level normal stress ismaintained or increased in most joint models. Their results present that this relationship is depended several roughness properties in joint model for natural rock joint. The relationship between the shear strength and the Properties for profiles estimated by some statistical parameter in roughness has the low correlation and is not constant. The result between the data for direct shear test and using Barton's equation, Barton's equation has not the effectiveness for the effect of anisotropy and has not suitable to recognizing the properties for joint surface. It means that JRC has not the properties of anisotropic rock surface. The fractal dimension is well correlated with the data of direct shear test than those of JRC. New experimental formulae using fractal dimension is comported with the anisotropic properties for direct shear test.

  • Ballast track requires constant maintenance work due to progress of track irregularity. Fast Hardening Track(FHT) has been developed to reduce the maintenance effort done by injecting fast hardening mortar in aged ballast to convert slab track. For the application of FHT to a railway bridge, post-installed anchors should be placed at center of the track segment to fix it on bridge. This paper presents track-bridge interaction analysis results with FHT considering stiffness and strength of post-installed anchor, age of FHT concrete and friction between FHT and bridge deck surface. Based on the analysis results, this study suggests when is good to install the anchors and allow normal operation of passing train.
