  • We apply a partitioned-solution (iterative-staggered) coupling method based on a fixed Eulerian mesh with the level set function to a large-deformation fluid-structure interaction (FSI) problem where a large-deformable thin structure moves in a high-speed flow field, as an airbag does during deployment. This method combines advanced fluid and structure solvers-specifically, the constrained interpolation profile finite element method (CIP-FEM) for fluid Eulerian mesh and large-deformable structural elements for Lagrangian structural mesh. We express the large-deformable interface as a zero isosurface by the level set function, and introduce virtual nodes with level sets and structural normal velocities to generate the level set function according to the large-deformable interfacial geometry and enforce the kinematic condition at the interface. The virtual nodes are located in the direction normal to the structural mesh. It is confirmed that application of the method to unfolded airbag deployment simulation shows the adequacy of the method.

  • This study was undertaken to establish the roentgenocephalometric standards of the Korean children in Hellman dental age III C. The subjects consisted of 33 males and 33 females with the normal occlusion and acceptable profile. The lateral cephalometric films were taken with the teeth in centric occlusion, the soft tissue outline of the nose, lips, and chin was made visible by the low-speed films, 70Kvp, 100Mas. Their linear and angular measurements were performed by Jarabak's methods. The following results were obtained; 1) The author made the tables of standard deviation from the measured values. 2) Each linear measurement of the skull was greater in males than in females. 3) The maxillary basal bones were more protrusive in Korean children than in Caucasian. 4) The degree of the facial convexity was larger in Korean children than in Caucasian. 5) The labial inclination of the upper & lower incisors was greater in Korean children than in Caucasian. The labial inclination of the upper incisor was greater in females, but the labial inclination of the lower incisor was greater in males.

  • This study was undertaken to investigate the exact values of the cephalometric standards of Hellman dental age III B groups of Korean in the reontgenocephalometry. The subjects consisted of 25 males and the same number of females with the normal occlusion and acceptable profile. Each lateral cephalometric head film was taken with the teeth in occlusion and the Focal-film distance was 300cm. Their linear and angular measurements were made directly. The following conclusions were obtained; 1) The author made the tables of standard deviation from the measured values. 2) The degree of the facial convexity of Korean children was larger than that of the white. 3) The labial inclination of the lower central incisor in male was a little greater than that in female.

  • The patient, 16 years female, complained of anterior cross-bite and retrusion of maxilla. Mandibular incisors occluded labially to maxillary incisors. Normally developed mandibular arch in normal elation to facial line, S-N-Pog was within normal range. Cross-bite of anterior teeth was corrected by means of Class III elastics under multibanded system. Space for alignment of crowding of upper anterior teeth was regained by means of cervical headgear and sliding yoke. She gained good alignment of anterior teeth and attractive facial profile after 2 years.

  • This report presents a case of adolescent patient who had multiple impacted teeth and no systemic disease, and was treated with removable and fixed orthodontic appliances. The results obtained through these cases were summarized as follows : 1. Even in the case without systemic disease, there can be the delayed eruption of multiple teeth 2. If the root formation is not completed, root have no excessive curvature, axial inclination of the tooth is not excessive, and there is eruption space, the tooth can be induced to normal occlusion. 3. Since esthetically proper occlusion and dentition was acquired by recovery of the impacted teeth to normal occlusion, the prosthodontic treatment after extraction of the impacted teeth was less needed. 4. This treatment brought psychological stability to pubertal patient who was interested in his facial profile.

  • This study aims to propose a new model axial flow fan which attachs centrifugal blades, and to investigate the effect of centrifugal blades on the performance improvement of new model axial flow fan. A numerical simulation has been conducted using STAR-CD commercial code to solve the three dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equation for high Reynolds number $k-{\epsilon}$ turbulent model. Numerical simulation is carried out to investigate the detail phenomenon in the flow field and performance characteristics of new model and normal model fan. Calculation results are compared with normal model's results to investigate which centrifugal blades effect on velocity profile and pressure distribution at various flow field positions. and calculation results show that new model fan can improve the performance of total pressure.

  • This study was performed to establish the cephalometric standards and growth change of Korean teen-age group by Ricketts analysis. A roentgenocephalometric study was made from 365 subjects, that consist of 159 males, 206 females with normal occlusion, acceptable profile and no history of orthodontic and prosthodontic treatment. The results were as follows: 1. The tables of means, standard deviation from measured values were made. (male, female, both sex). 2. The tables of regression equations from measured values were made to establish the relationship between age and each item. (male, female, both sex). 3. All linear measurements of each item in male were greater than in females. 4. Items which show more linear than any other items were condyle axis, facial axis length, corpus length and upper molar position.

  • Laryngeal DDK involve with the rate, pattern, and regularity (periodicity) in opening and closing of vocal fold. This study was aimed at investigating the characteristics of laryngeal DDK between nonfluent and fluent speakers. One with an ataxic dysarthria (with cerebellar lesion) and the other with stuttering, and 13 normal speakers were evaluated. L-DDK were analyzed with MSP (motor speech profile, CSL 4400). Measures of DDK included: DDKavr, DDKcvp, DDKjit, DDKavp. An ataxic dysarthric speaker and a stutterer showed more reduced rate and aperiodic L-DDK (both adductory and abductory movement) than normal speakers. But the average L-DDK period (ms) in adductory movement in a speaker with stuttering showed more decreased than the other. Results from this study are preliminary. Nonetheless, results of L-DDK produced by nonfluent speakers suggested the possibility to have relation with slow rate of phonatory initiation and connected speech. In the future, perceptual studies are needed in conjuction with acoustic and speech production.

  • Objectives: This study was done out to evaluate the effects of Sida rhombifolia methanol extract (SRM) on diabetes in moderately diabetic (MD) and severely diabetic (SD) Sprague-Dawley rats. Methods: SRM was prepared by soaking the powdered plant material in 70% methanol and rota evaporating the methanol from the extract. Effective hypoglycemic doses were established by performing oral glucose tolerance tests (OGTTs) in normal rats. Hourly effects of SRM on glucose were observed in the MD and the SD rats. Rats were grouped, five rats to a group, into normal control 1 (NC1), MD control 1 (MDC1), MD experimental 1 (MDE1), SD control 1 (SDC1), and SD experimental 1 (SDE1) groups. All rats in the control groups were administered 1 mL of distilled water (DW). The rats in the MDE1 and the SDE1 groups were administered SRM orally at 200 and 300 mg/kg body weight (BW), respectively, dissolved in 1 mL of DW. Blood was collected initially and at intervals of 1 hour for 6 hours to measure blood glucose. A similar experimental design was followed for the 30-day long-term trial. Finally, rats were sacrificed, and blood was collected to measure blood glucose, lipid profiles, thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) and reduced glutathione (GSH). Results: OGTTs indicated that two doses (200 and 300 mg/kg BW) were effective hypoglycemic doses in normal rats. Both doses reduced glucose levels after 1 hour in the MDE1 and the SDE1 groups. A long-term trial of SRM in the MD group showed a reduced glucose level, a normal lipid profile, and normal GSH and TBARS levels. In SD rats, SRM had no statistically significant effects on these parameters. Normal weight was achieved in the MD rats, but the SD rats showed reduced BW. Conclusion: The study demonstrates that SRM has potential to alleviate the conditions of moderate diabetic, but not severe diabetes.
