  • We investigated the structure-activity relationships on use of multi-layer neural networks. The relationships are techniques required in developments of medicines. Since many kinds of observations might be adopted on the techniques, we discussed some points between the observations and the properties of multi-layer neural networks. In the structure-activity relationships, an important property is not that standard deviations are nearly equal to zero for observed physiological activity, but prediction ability for unknown medicines. Since we adopted non-linear approximation, the function to represent the activity can be defined by observations; therefore, we believe that the standard deviations have not significance. The function was examined by "leave-one-out" method, which was originally introduced for the multi-regression analysis. In the linear approximation, the examination is significance, however, we believe that the method is inappropriate in case of nonlinear fitting as neural networks; therefore, we derived a new index fer the relationships from the differential of information propagation in the neural network. By using the index, we discussed physiological activity of an anti-cancer medicine, Mitomycine derivatives. The neuro-computing suggests that there is no direction to extend the anti-cancer activity of Mitomycine, which is close to the trend of anticancer developing.

  • Air brake valves are widely used in automotive braking systems and the Korean automobile industry depends on importing them. Therefore, we should develop the technical expertise for their domestic production. In this study, air brake valves were analyzed that can be used in a variety of automobiles. Computational fluid dynamics analysis, static structural analysis, and hyper-elastic analysis were carried out. Before production of an air brake valve system, the performance of different parts has to be evaluated, for instance by using finite element analysis. The structural stability of the product can be determined using static dynamics. The compression behavior of the O-ring is predictable by nonlinear hyper elastic analysis, although errors are possible due to one-way loading. This simulation study can both save time and reduce costs compared to the development of experimental prototypes.

  • Flexibly-reconfigurable roll forming (FRRF) is a novel sheet metal forming technology conducive to produce multi-curvature surfaces by controlling strain distribution along longitudinal direction. Reconfigurable rollers could be arranged to implement a kind of punch die set. By utilizing these reconfigurable rollers, desired curved surface can be formed. In FRRF process, three-dimensional surface is formed from two-dimensional curve. Thus, it is difficult to predict the forming result. In this study, a regression analysis was suggested to construct a predictive model for a longitudinal curvature of FRRF process. To facilitate investigation, input parameters affecting the longitudinal curvature of FRRF were determined as maximum compression value, curvature radius in the transverse direction, and initial blank width. Three-factor three-level full factorial experimental design was utilized and 27 experiments using FRRF apparatus were performed to obtain sample data of the regression model. Regression analysis was carried out using experimental results as sample data. The model used for regression analysis was a quadratic nonlinear regression model. Determination factor and root mean square root error were calculated to confirm the conformity of this model. Through goodness of fit test, this regression predictive model was verified.

  • Thermal deformations of tension mask under localized heating are analyzed using finite element method and electron beam landing shifts are predicted by the analysis results. In CRT, electron beam landing shifts due to thermal deformations of the tension mask make the color purity of screen worse. In order to get the final results of thermal deformations, firstly the tension processes of the mask and following welding processes between the tensional mask and rail must be analyzed sequentially. And then, nonlinear transient thermo-elastic finite element analysis is performed on every part inside CRT including tension mask, wherein thermal radiation is a main heat transfer mechanism. Because the tension mask has numerous slits, the effective thermal conductivity and effective and effective elastic modulus is calculated, and the tension mask is modeled as a shell without slits. From the displacement results of tension mask, electron beam landing shifts is calculated directly. Experiments are performed to confirm our analysis results. Temperature distributions and beam landing shifts of tension mask are measured and the results are in good agreement with those of analyses.

  • The objective of this work is to develop the knee joint model for representing various pendulum motions and quantifying the spasticity. Knee joint model included the extension and flexion muscles. The joint moment consists of both the active moment from the stretch reflex and the passive moment from the viscoelastic joint properties. The stretch reflex was modeled as nonlinear feedback of muscle length and the muscle lengthening velocity, which is Physiologically-feasible. Moreover, we modeled the spastic reflex as having dynamic threshold to account far the various pendulum trajectories of spastic patients. We determined the model parameters of three patients who showed different pendulum trajectories through minimization of error between experimental and simulated trajectories. The simulated joint trajectories closely matched with the experimental ones, which show the proposed model can predict pendulum motions of patients with different spastic severities. The predicted muscle force from spastic reflex appeared more frequently in the severe spastic patient, which indicates the dynamic threshold relaxes slowly in this patient as is manifested by the variation coefficient of dynamic threshold. The proposed method provides prediction of muscle force and intuitive and objective evaluation of spasticity and it is expected to be useful in quantitative assessment of spasticity.

  • Seismic control performance of MR dampers, which have severe nonlinearity, differs with respect to the dynamic characteristics of an earthquake such as magnitude, frequency and duration. In this study, the effects of excitation characteristics on the equivalent linear system of a building structure with the MR damper are investigated through numerical analysis for artificial ground motions generated from different response spectrums. The equivalent damping ratio of the structure with the MR damper is calculated using Newmark and Hall's equations for ground motion amplification factors. It is found that the equivalent damping ratio of the structure with the MR damper is dependent on the ratio of the maximum friction force of the MR damper over excitation magnitude. frequency contents of the earthquake ground motion affects the equivalent damping ratio of long-period structures considerably. Also, additional damping effect caused by interaction between the viscousity and friction of the MR damper is observed. Finally, response reduction factors for equivalent linear systems are proposed in order to improve accuracy in the prediction of the actual nonlinear response.

  • In this paper, preliminary results for performance prediction of a dual-rotor wind turbine generator system are presented. Blade element and momentum theories are used to model the aerodynamic forces and moments acting on the rotor blades, and multi-body dynamics approach is used to integrate the major components to represent the overall system. Not only the steady-state performance but the transient response characteristics are analyzed. Pitch control strategy to control the rotor speed and the generator output is proposed and its performance is verified through the nonlinear simulation.

  • In this paper, the effect of wrinkling on the cut propagation direction of thin membrane was studied using geometrically nonlinear shell element post-buckling analysis. In the analysis, rectangular tensile membrane configuration with a slanted center cut was considered. The cut propagation direction was predicted by maximum energy release rate method, $K_{II}$-zero method, and maximum tangential stress method. The cut propagation angle and the $J$-integral values were calculated for the wrinkled and unwrinkled cases and the results were compared. Various initial cut orientation angles were considered and the effect on the propagation direction was studied. The cut propagation paths were also predicted by virtual cut extension approach.

  • This paper proposes an approximated contact force model to identify the nonlinear behavior of a fuel rod with gap supports; also, the numerical prediction of interfacial forces in the mechanical contact of fuel rods with gap supports is studied. The Newmark integration method requires the current status of the contact force, but the contact force is not given a priori. Taylor's expansion can be used to predict the unknown contact force; therefore, it should be guaranteed that the first derivative of the contact force is continuous. This work proposes a continuous and differentiable contact force model with the ability to estimate the current state of the contact force. An approximated convex and differentiable potential function for the contact force is described, and a variational formulation is also provided. A numerical example that considers the particularly stiff supports has been studied, and a fuel rod with hardening supports was also examined for a realistic simulation. An approximated proper solution can be obtained using the results, and abrupt changes from the contacting state to non-contacting state, or vice versa, can be relieved. It can also be seen that not only the external force but also the developed contact force affects the response.

  • An idealized analytical model is proposed to estimate the effects of restrainer upon global response behaviors of a bridge system under seismic excitations. Pounding actions between adjacent vibration units and friction at movable supports are introduced in addition to other phenomena such as nonlinear behaviors of pier, motions of the foundation and abutment to achieve the better prediction of the bridge motion. The applied restrainer is assumed to be a dead-band system, which has the force clearance and the linear-elastic force. Using the proposed model, the dynamic characteristics of a bridge system retrofitted by restrainers is examined, and the effects of stiffness and clearance length of restrainer is also investigated. The main effect of the application of restrainers is found to reduce the relative displacements and the trend becomes greater with the shorter clearance length except between pier units. It is found that the relative displacements between abutment and adjacent pier units are decreased as the stiffness of restrainer increases, but almost independent upon the stiffness increments of restrainer. However, the relative displacements between pier units tend to be increased due to the applications of the restrainers.
