  • The AASHTO seismic base isolation design approach has been reviewed and modified to fit the nonlinear static analysis procedure for reinforced concrete structures in a simpler way. Such an adaptation may be possible for the fact that the reinforced concrete under development of damage due to earthquake loading keeps softening to result in period shifting toward longer side. The validity of the proposed approach was verified by applying it to the examples presented in the current state-of-the-practice approach.

  • A on-line optimization scheme based on model in a binary distillation process is proposed. A reduced-order model utilized the concept of collocation is used as a process model and the recursive prediction error method is employed to identify the reduced-order model. The concentrations of end products are controlled by nonlinear adaptive predictive control algorithm. The objective function is constructed to find optimum operate condition for saving utility cost. The proposed optimization is scheme is tested through simulation studies in 13-staged water-methanol distillation column.

  • Early efforts to model wave transformation from offshore to inshore were based on the ray theory which accounts for wave refraction due to changes in bathymetry and the diffraction effects were ignored. Prediction of nearshore waves with the combined effects of refraction and diffraction as well as reflection has taken a new dimension with the use of the mild-slope equation and the Boussinesq equation. • This study investigates the hysteresis phenomena of a Synchronous Reluctance Motor (SynRM) using coupled FEM and Preisach modeling. Preisach's model, which allows accurate prediction of hysteresis, is adopted in this procedure to provide a nonlinear solution. the computer simulation and experimental result for the i$\lambda$loci show the propriety of the proposed method.

  • This paper deals with the prediction and the evaluation of the measured seismic responses of the Hualien large-scale seismic test soil-structure system. The predicted analysis was carried out for the model structure by the computer code SASSI utilizing soil properties derived from geotechnical investigations and correlation analysis of recorded earthquake responses of soil. Utilizing the soil properties, seismic responses were predicted and compared with measured ones. The nonlinear effects of soil on structural responses were also evaluated.

  • As monitoring, testing, and measuring techniques develop, predictive control of components and complete systems have become more practical and affordable. In this paper we develop a statistics-based approach assuming nonlinear degradation paths and time-dependent standard deviation. This approach can be extended to provide reliability estimates and limit value determination in the censoring case fur predictive maintenance policy.

  • The purpose of this work is to build a fuzzy model of a batch culture for a process control. The process is highly nonlinear system with large delay. This paper presents two methods of modeling the process behavior. One is a method of recognizing them by fuzzy rules that are contracted by the pattern analysis in consideration of skilled operators' way. The other is a method of predicting them by approximate linear models and fuzzy rules by statistic analysis.

  • This study concentrates on the second-order diffraction problem around circular cylinders in multi-frequency waves. The method of solution is a time-domain Rankine panel method which adopts a higher-order approximation for the velocity potential and wave elevation. In the present study, the multiple second-order quadratic transfer functions are extracted from the second-order time signal generated in random waves, and the comparison with other bench-mark test results shows a good agreement. This approach is directly applicable to prediction of nonlinear forces on offshore structures in random ocean.

  • A finite element analysis for a synchronous reluctance motor (SynRM) is presented with emphasis on the effect of saturation and iron losses. Preisachs model, which allows accurate prediction of iron losses, is adopted in this procedure to provide a nonlinear solution. This technique provide significant properties of proposed SynRM under the magnetic saturation and iron losses effect.
