This study presents a finite element analysis method that can accurately evaluate the nonlinear behaviour of structures affected by shallow soft subsoils and the soil-structure interaction. A two-dimensional finite element model that consists of a structure and shallow soft subsoil was used. The finite element model was used for a nonlinear time domain analysis of the OpenSees program. A parametric study was performed to investigate the effects of soil shear velocities, earthquake input motions, soft soil depth, and soil-structure interaction. The result of the proposed nonlinear finite element analysis method was compared with the result of an existing frequency domain analysis method, which is frequently used for addressing nonlinear soil behavior. The result showed that the frequency domain analysis, which uses equivalent secant soil stiffness and does not address the soil-structure interaction, significantly overestimated the response of the structures with short dynamic periods. The effect of the soil-structure interaction on the response spectrum did not significantly vary with the foundation dimensions and structure mass.
Buckling and post-buckling cases are often occurred in aorta artery because it affected by higher pressure. Also, its stability has a vital importance to humans and animals. The loss of stability in arteries may lead to arterial tortuosity and kinking. In this paper, post-buckling analysis of aorta artery is investigated under axial compression loads on the basis of Euler-Bernoulli beam theory by using finite element method. It is known that post-buckling problems are geometrically nonlinear problems. In the geometrically nonlinear model, the Von Karman nonlinear kinematic relationship is employed. Two types of support conditions for the aorta artery are considered. The considered non-linear problem is solved by using incremental displacement-based finite element method in conjunction with Newton-Raphson iteration method. The aorta artery is modeled as a cylindrical tube with different average diameters. In the numerical results, the effects of the geometry parameters of aorta artery on the post-buckling case are investigated in detail. Nonlinear deflections and critical buckling loads are obtained and discussed on the post-buckling case.
The effect of the initial imperfections on the nonlinear behaviors and ultimate strength of the thin-walled members subjected to the axial loads, obtained by the finite element stability analysis, are examined. As the initial imperfections, the bucking mode shapes of the members are adopted. The buckling mode shapes of the thin-walled members are obtained by the transfer matrix method. In the finite element stability analysis, isoparametric degenerated shell element is used, and the geometrical and material nonlinearity are considered based on the Green Lagrange strain definition and the Prandtl-Reuss stress-strain relation following the von Mises yield criterion. The U-, box- and I-section members subjected to the axial loads are adopted for numerical examples, and the effects of the initial imperfections on the nonlinear behaviors and ultimate strength of the members are examined.

The finite element method has become the most widely used method of structural analysis and recently, the method has often been applied to complex dynamic and nonlinear structural analyses problems. Even for these complex problems, where the responses are hard to predict, finite element analyses yield reliable results if appropriate element types and meshes are used. However, the dynamic and nonlinear behaviors of a structure often include large deformations in various portions of the structure and if the same mesh is used throughout the analysis, some elements may deform to shapes beyond the reliable limits; thus dynamically adapting finite element meshes are needed in order for the finite element analyses to be accurate. In addition, to satisfy the users requirement of quick real run time of finite element programs, the algorithms must be computationally efficient. This paper presents an adaptive finite element mesh generation scheme for dynamic analyses of structures that may adapt at each time step. Representative strain values are used for error estimates and combinations of the h-method(node movement) and the r-method(element division) are used for mesh refinements. A coefficient that depends on the shape of an element is used to limit overly distorted elements. A simple frame example shows the accuracy and computational efficiency of the scheme. The aim of the study is to outline the adaptive scheme and to demonstrate the potential use in general finite element analyses of dynamic and nonlinear structural problems commonly encountered.
A rational three-dimensional nonlinear finite element model is described and implemented for evaluating the behavior of high strength concrete slabs under transverse load. The concrete was idealized by using twenty-nodded isoparametric brick elements with embedded reinforcements. The concrete material modeling allows for normal (NSC) and high strength concrete (HSC), which was calibrated based on experimental data. The behavior of concrete in compression is simulated by an elastoplastic work-hardening model, and in tension a suitable post-cracking model based on tension stiffening and shear retention models are employed. The nonlinear equations have been solved using the incremental iterative technique based on the modified Newton-Raphson method. The FE formulation and material modeling is implemented into a finite element code in order to carry out the numerical study and to predict the behavior up to ultimate conditions of various slabs under transverse loads. The validity of the theoretical formulations and the program used was verified through comparison with available experimental data, and the agreement has proven to be very good. A parametric study has been also carried out to investigate the influence of different material and geometric properties on the behavior of HSC slabs. Influencing factors, such as concrete strength, steel ratio, aspect ratio, and support conditions on the load-deflection characteristics, concrete and steel stresses and strains were investigated.

Three methods of design sensitivity analysis for structures such as numerical method, analytical method and semi-analytical method have been developed for the last three decades. Although analytical design sensitivity analysis can provide very exact result, it is difficult to implement into practical design problems. Therefore, numerical method such as finite difference method is widely used to simply obtain the design sensitivity in most cases. The numerical differentiation is sufficiently accurate and reliable fur most linear problems. However, it turns out that the numerical differentiation is inefficient and inaccurate in nonlinear design sensitivity analysis because its computational cost depends on the number of design variables and large numerical errors can be included. Thus the semi-analytical method is more suitable for complicated design problems. Moreover, semi-analytical method is easy to be performed in design procedure, which can be coupled with an analysis solver such as commercial finite element package. In this paper, implementation procedure fur the semi-analytical design sensitivity analysis outside of the commercial finite element package is studied and the computational technique is proposed for evaluating the partial differentiation of internal nodal force, so called pseudo-load. Numerical examples coupled with commercial finite element package are shown to verify usefulness of proposed semi-analytical sensitivity analysis procedure and computational technique for pseudo-load.
Large deflection dynamic responses of laminated composite cylindrical shells under impact are analyzed by the geometrically nonlinear finite element method based on a generalized Sander's shell theory with the first order transverse shear deformation and the von-Karman large deflection assumption. A modified indentation law with inelastic indentation is employed for the contact force. The nonlinear finite element equations of motion of shell and an impactor along with the contact laws are solved numerically using Newmark's time marching integration scheme in conjunction with Akay type successive iteration in each step. The ply failure region of the laminated shell is estimated using the Tsai- Wu quadratic interaction criteria. Numerical results, including the contact force histories, deflections and strains are presented and compared with the ones by linear analysis. The effect of the radius of curvature on the composite shell behaviors is investigated and discussed.

A finite element computational procedure for the accurate analysis of quasistatic thermorheological complex structures response is developed. The geometrical nonlinearity, arising from large displacements and rotations (but small strains), is accounted for by the total Lagrangian description of motion. The Schapery's nonlinear single-integral viscoelastic constitutive model is modified for a time-stress-temperature-dependent behavior. The nonlinear thermo-viscoelastic constitutive equations are incrementalized leading to a recursive relationship and thereby the resulting finite element equations necessitate data storage from the previous time step only, and not the entire deformation history. The Newton-Raphson iterative scheme is employed to obtain a converged solution for the non-linear finite element equations. The developed numerical model is verified with the previously published works and a good agreement with them is found. The applicability of the developed model is demonstrated by analyzing two examples with different thermal/mechanical loading histories.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the behavior and strength of prestressed concrete deep beams using nonlinear analysis. By using a sophisticated nonlinear finite element analysis program, the accuracy and objectivity of the assessment process can be enhanced. A computer program, the RCAHEST (Reinforced Concrete Analysis in Higher Evaluation System Technology), was used for the analysis of reinforced concrete structures. Tensile, compressive and shear models of cracked concrete and models of reinforcing and prestressing steel were used to account for the material nonlinearity of prestressed concrete. The smeared crack approach was incorporated. A bonded or unbonded prestressing bar element is used based on the finite element method, which can represent the interaction between the prestressing bars and concrete of a prestressed concrete member. The proposed numerical method for the evaluation of behavior and strength of prestressed concrete deep beams is verified by comparing its results with reliable experimental results.
In this paper, geometrically non-linear analysis of a functionally graded simple supported beam is investigated with porosity effect. The material properties of the beam are assumed to vary though height direction according to a prescribed power-law distributions with different porosity models. In the nonlinear kinematic model of the beam, the total Lagrangian approach is used within Timoshenko beam theory. In the solution of the nonlinear problem, the finite element method is used in conjunction with the Newton-Raphson method. In the study, the effects of material distribution such as power-law exponents, porosity coefficients, nonlinear effects on the static behavior of functionally graded beams are examined and discussed with porosity effects. The difference between the geometrically linear and nonlinear analysis of functionally graded porous beam is investigated in detail. Also, the effects of the different porosity models on the functionally graded beams are investigated both linear and nonlinear cases.
