  • In this paper, we intend to introduce a nonlinear finite element method based on the fully nonlinear potential flow theory in order to simulate the large amplitude sloshing flow in two-dimensional baffled tank subject to horizontally forced excitation. The free surface is tracked by a direct time differentiation scheme with the four-step predictor-corrector time integration method. The flow velocity is accurately recovered from the velocity potential by second-order least square method. In order to maintain the finite element mesh regularity and total mass, the semi-Lagrangian surface tracking method with area conservation is applied. According to the numerical formulae, we perform the parametric experiments by varying the installation height and the opening width of baffles, in order to examine the effects of baffle on the nonlinear liquid sloshing. From the numerical results, the hydrodynamic characteristics of the large amplitude sloshing are investigated.

  • In this pater, the QLQG/LTR control method is applied for the position control of the nonlinear timing belt driving sys-tem. Parameters fo the plant are identified by genetic algorithm and nonlinear elements, such as Coulomb friction and dead-zone, and quasi-linearized by RIDE method. Comparing with the LQG/LTR contro. the QLQG/LTR has similar structures of the LQG/LTR, but this method can consider nonlinear effects in designing the controller. Thus, the QLQG/LTR control system is robust to hard nonlinearities such as Coulomb friction, dead-zone, etc. Forma given hard non-linear system through experiments, it is shown that the tracking performance of the QLQG/LTR control system can be very improved that the LQF/LTR control system.

  • Piezoelectric solids such as PZT and PLZT have been widely used as sensors and actuators for various smart systems. One of the problems arising in actuator applications is that a larger actuation force needs to be produced from a small system. This naturally leads to local electric field or stress concentration and thereby resulting in a nonlinear behavior inside the system, Hence, it becomes more important to predict the nonlinear behavior of piezoelectric solids. In this paper we investigate the mechanism of nonlinear behavior in those materials and suggest a constitutive and finite element model. The calculation results obtained from the model seem to be qualitatively consistent with experiments.

  • A FEA model is proposed to study the effects of fiber waviness on tensile/comprssive nonlinear behaviors of thick unidirectional composites. In the analyses both material and geometical nonlinarities are considered. The predicted results from the FEA model are compared with those obtained from the previous analytical model (thin carpet model) Tensile/compressive tests are also conducted on the specimens with various controlled fiber waviness to obtain the nonlinear behaviors of composites experimentally. The predictions from the FEA model show better agreements with the experiments than those from the analytical model.

  • Electromagnetic Suspension(EMS) System produces no noise, friction and heat through non-contacting operation Therefore, the applicable device using EMS system has a lot of attraction in case of the high-speed and non-contacting transmission EMS with nonlinear properties requires a precise airgap position control and stable kinematics characteristics under the disturbances, In this study, the nonlinear system was linearized by a Nonlinear Feedback Lineariztion(NFL) method. The NFL method requires that the modelling should be exact, and the state variables should be measured and a rapidly operating controller be necessary on account of a heavy data calculating In the experiments. the ideal control characteristics of the NFL was acquired through simulation at first. then the characteristics of the actual system were compared with those of simulation. In addition, the results by NFL were examined and analysed considering the characteristics of the PID control. The Control by NFL shows much stable control characteristics than the PID control. Whereas, the steady state errors occur for various disturbances. hence a robust control design is remained for a further study.

  • The nonlinear characteristics for the hinge of a deployable missile control fin are investigated experimentally. The nonlinearity is caused by a worn or loose hinge and manufacturing tolerance and cannot be eliminated completely. The structural nonlinearity has an effect on the static and dynamic characteristics of the control fin. Therefore, it is necessary to establish the accurate nonlinear model for the hinge of the control fin. In the present study the existence of nonlinearities in the hinge is confirmed from the frequency response experiments such as tip random excitation and base sine sweep. Using the system identification method, especially, “Force-State Mapping Technique”, the types of nonlinearities are identified and the nonlinear hinge model of the control fin is established.

  • In this study, the Mild slope equation is extended to both rapidly varying topography and nonlinear waves, using the Hamiltonian principle. It is shown that this equation is equivalent to the modified mild-slope equation (Kirby and Misra, 1998) for small amplitude wave, and it is the same form with the nonlinear mild-slope equation (Isobe, 1994) for slowly varying bottom topography. Comparing its numerical solutions with the results of some hydraulic experiments, there is good agreement between them.

  • Integral imaging combined with photon-counting detection has been researched for three-dimensional information sensing under low-light-level conditions. This paper addresses the extraction of distance information with photon-counting integral imaging. The longitudinal distance to the object is obtained utilizing photon-counting elemental images. The pixel disparity is estimated by maximizing the nonlinear correlation of photocounts. The first- and second-order statistical properties of the nonlinear correlation are theoretically derived. In the experiments, these properties are verified by varying the mean number of photocounts in the scene. The average distance is compared to that from the intensity information, showing the robustness of the proposed system even at low photocounts.

  • Piezoelectric solids such as PZT and PLZT have been widely used as sensors or actuators for various smart structural systems. The main problem occurring in the applications is that a larger and larger actuation force is required to maximize the function of the system. This naturally leads to local concentrations of electric or stress fields near crack tips or geometric irregularities and thereby results in a nonlinear behavior of the system Hence, it becomes more important to Predict the nonlinear behavior of piezoelectric solids In this Paper we investigate the micro-mechanism of nonlinear behavior in piezoelectric materials and propose constitutive equations. The calculation results obtained from an associated finite element Program are shown to be qualitatively consistent with experiments.

  • A series of dynamic and static tests were conducted to observe the actual responses of a 1:5 scale 3-story reinforced concrete(RC) frame which was designed only for gravity loads. One of the major objectives of these experiments is to provide the calibration to the available static and dynamic inelastic analysis techniques. In this study, the experimental results were simulated by using a nonlinear analysis program for reinforced concrete frame, IDARC-2D. The evaluation of the degree of the simulation leads to the conclusion that while the global behaviors such as story drifts and shears can be in general simulated with the limited accuracy in the dynamic nonlinear analysis, it is rather easy and simple to get the fairly high level of accuracy in the prediction of global and local behaviors in the static nonlinear analysis by using IDARC-2D.
