  • In order to evaluate the effect of permanent softening behavior on springback prediction, 2D-draw bending simulations were compared with experiments for friction stir welded DP590 steel sheets. To account fur the nonlinear hardening behavior, the combined isotropic-kinematic hardening law was utilized with and without considering the permanent softening behavior during reverse loading. Also, the non-quadratic orthotropic yield function, Yld2000-2d, was used to describe the anisotropic initial-yielding behavior of the base sheet while anisotropic properties of the weld zone were ignored for simplicity.

  • There have been continuous efforts on automating welding processes. This automation process could be said to fall into two categories, weld seam tracking and weld quality evaluation. Recently, the attempts to achieve these two functions simultaneously are on the increase. For the study presented in this paper, a vision sensor is made, a vision system is constructed and using this, the 3 dimensional geometry of the bead is measured on-line. For the application as in welding, which is the characteristic of nonlinear process, a fuzzy controller is designed. And with this, an adaptive control system is proposed which acquires the bead height and the coordinates of the point on the bead along the horizontal fillet joint, performs seam tracking with those data, and also at the same time, controls the bead geometry to a uniform shape. A communication system, which enables the communication with the industrial robot, is designed to control the bead geometry and to track the weld seam. Experiments are made with varied offset angles from the pre-taught weld path, and they showed the adaptive system works favorable results.

  • We have successfully grown colorless and transparent Rb-doped potassium niobate (KRN) single crystals using the top seeded solution growth(TSSG) technique. In our crystal growth experiments, the Rb doping concentrations within the melt range from 2-15 mol% relative to that of Nb$_2$O5. Atomic absorption measurements indicate that the Rb content in the KRN solid solution is rather low; the Rb segregation coefficient is found to be on the order of 0.05. It is believed that this is due to the relatively much larger Rb+ ionic radius compared to that of K+, rendering it more difficult for Rb to replace K in the KNbO$_3$(KN) host lattice. Preliminary single-pass second harmonic generation (SHG) experimental results indicate that there exists marginal improvement in the phase-matching temperature tolerance of KRN compared to that of pure Kn single crystals.

  • In this paper, the structural behavior of R/C cylindrical panel is analyzed by experimental results. To avoid the geometric imperfection, R/C shell specimens are made by use of a stiff steel mold. From experimental results, the load carrying behavior of R/C cylindrical panel is presented under an external lateral pressure. Even if R/C shell does not posses geometric imperfections, the inaccuracy of the reinforcement position strongly affects to the ultimate strength and the failure patterns of such shells. To explain these effects, FEM nonlinear analyses are done under the same conditions as those of experiments. The behavior of R/C cylindrical shells are well simulated under the consideration of both the geometric imperfection and several inaccuracies.

  • This paper presents an advanced torque ripple minimization method of a switched reluctance motor (SRM) using torque sharing function (TSF). Generally, TSF is applied into the torque control. However, the conventional TSF cannot follow the expected torque well because of the nonlinear characteristics of the SRM. Moreover, the tail current that is generated at a high speed motor drive makes unexpected torque ripples. The proposed method combined TSF with fuzzy logic control (FLC). The advantage of this method is that the torque can be controlled unity at any conditions. In addition, the controller can track the torque under the condition of the wrong TSF. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is verified by the simulations and experiments.

  • Designing fuzzy controller, there are difficulties that we have to determine fuzzy rules and shapes of membership functions which are usually obtained by the amount of trial-and-error or experiences from the experts. In this paper, to overcome these defects, genetic algorithms which is probabilistic search method based on genetics and evolution theory are used to determine fuzzy rules and fuzzy membership functions. We design a series compensation fuzzy controller, then determine basic structures, input-output variables, fuzzy inference methods and defuzzification methods for fuzzy controllers. We develop genetic algorithms which may search more accurate optimal solutions. For evaluating the fuzzy controller performances through experiments upon an actual system, we design the fuzzy controllers for the speed control of a DC series motor with nonlinear characteristics and show good output responses to reference inputs.

  • A newly designed haptic interface enables an operator to control a remote robot precisely. It transmits position information to the remote robot and feeds back the interaction force from it. A control algorithm of haptic interface has been studied to improve the robustness and stability to uncertain dynamic environments with a proposed contact dynamic model that incorporates human hand dynamics. A simplified hybrid parallel robot dynamic model fur a 6 DOF haptic device was proposed to from a real time control system, which does not include nonlinear components. LQC/LTR scheme was adopted in this paper for the compensation of un-modeled dynamics. The recovery of the farce from the remote robot at the haptic interface was demonstrated through the experiments.

  • This paper presents a novel method to speed up neural network (NN) based face detection systems. NN-based face detection can be viewed as a classification and search problem. The proposed method formulates the search problem as an integer nonlinear optimization problem (INLP) and expands the basic particle swarm optimization (PSO) to solve it. PSO works with a population of particles, each representing a subwindow in an input image. The subwindows are evaluated by how well they match a NN-based face filter. A face is indicated when the filter response of the best particle is above a given threshold. To achieve better performance, the influence of PSO parameter settings on the search performance was investigated. Experiments show that with fine-adjusted parameters, the proposed method leads to a speedup of 94 on 320${\times}$240 images compared to the traditional exhaustive search method.

  • With the accuracy of the nonlinearity guaranteed, plenty of time and large memory space are needed when we solve the finite element numerical solution of nonlinear partial differential equations. In this paper, we use the Group Element Method (GEM) to deal with the non-linearity of the BBM-Burgers Equation with Conservation form and perform a numerical analysis for two particular initial-boundary value (the Dirichlet boundary conditions and Neumann-Dirichlet boundary conditions) problems with the Finite Element Method (FEM). Some numerical experiments are performed to analyze the error between the exact solution and the FEM solution in MATLAB.

  • In this paper, a voltage controller for the seamless transition of a grid-connected inverter for ESS is proposed. The single-phase inverter is operated as a current controller when the grid is connected and as a voltage controller in the stand-alone mode when the grid is disconnected. Generally, in the case of grid recovery, the overcurrent may flow into the system because of the mismatch phase between the inverter output and grid voltages. The proposed controller resolves the overcurrent problem through phase delay problems with initial value feed-forward control of the integrator when the grid voltage is restored. The effects of the control method are simulated through PSIM, and the usefulness of the control method is verified through experiments.
