  • We present a theoretical analysis of Gaussian beam propagation in nonlinear Kerr media by using aberration-free approximation and Huygens-Fresnel diffraction integral and obtain a simple analytic formular for Z-scan characteristics. Z-scan experiments are carried out on amorphous $As_2S_3$ thin film and compared with the theory developed, showing good agreement. The sign and the value of ${\gamma}$ have been measured at 633 nm to be $+8.65{\times}10^{-6}\textrm{cm}^2/W$. We also measured the far-field intensity profiles, which confirm again self-focusing effect.

  • There has recently been a considerable amount of interest in two-photon(TP) processes because of their applications to 3-D optical data storage and imaging, up-conversion lasing, and optical power limiting. Recently, the role of Dithienothlophene(DTT) as $\pi$-center of two-photon absorption(TPA) molecules was reported to give a large enhancement of TPA, compared with the benzeniods counterparts.$^{[1]}$ In this report, we carried out two experiments to investigate nonlinear optical absorption of the molecules in which central DTT is attached through conjugation to either a D/D or a D/A pair at the ends, forming a D-$\pi$-D(1 and 3) or D-$\pi$-A(2 and 4) sequence(Fig.1). All the samples were prepared in solutions with the same molar concentration. (omitted)

  • To find out generating mechanism of eddies in the polar frontal zone of the East Sea, we carried out a series of numerical experiments using the nonlinear $1^{1/2}-layer$ model allowing the effect of the polar front. We assumed the polar front at about $39^{\circ}N$ in zonal direction with the cold water region in the northern part and the warm water region in the southern part of the model ocean. To examine the effect of the frontal motion without the influence of the Tsushima Current from the beginning of the geostrophic adjustment, the initial state of the model ocean was assumed motionless. Eastward current was caused by the geostrophic adjustment process in the polar frontal zone that induced a steady northward coastal current along the Korean coast to satisfy the mass continuity. The overshooting of this coastal current acted as an initial disturbance of the zonal flow field which caused meanders and eddies. The spatial scales of eddies were in good agreement with the baroclinic instability theory.

  • Photonic crystal fibers(PCFs) with silica cores within an away of air holes have unique properties. Broad band single-mode and the octave-spanning supercontinuum generation, impossible to achieve in classical fibers, can be realized. The design of PCFs is very flexible. There are two parameters to manipulate: air hole diameter, and lattice pitch. We introduced a fabrication process for control of the parameters to obtain endlessly single mode PCF, which is single mode in a large wavelength range, and highly nonlinear PCF. The numerical analysis and experiments are included.

  • This paper provides an introduction to life-span simulation and numerical approach to support the performance design processes of reinforced concrete structures. An integrated computational system is proposed for life-span simulation of reinforced concrete. Conservation of moisture, carbon dioxide, oxygen, chloride, calcium and momentum is solved with hydration, carbonation, corrosion, ion dissolution. damage evolution and their thermodynamic/mechanical equilibrium. Coupled analysis of mass transport and damage mechanics associated with steel corrosion is presented for structural performance assessment of reinforced concrete. Multi-scale modeling of micro-pore formation and transport phenomena of moisture and ions are mutually linked for predicting the corrosion of reinforcement and volumetric changes. The interaction of crack propagation with corroded gel migration can also be simulated. Two finite element codes. multi-chemo physical simulation code (DuCOM) and nonlinear dynamic code of structural reinforced concrete (COM3) were combined together to form the integrated simulation system. This computational system was verified by the laboratory scale and large scale experiments of damaged reinforced concrete members under static loads, and has been applied to safety and serviceability assessment of existing structures. Based on the damage details predicted by the nonlinear finite element analytical system, the life-span-cost of RC structures including the original construction costs and the repairing costs for possible damage during the service life can be evaluated for design purpose.

  • In this study, the dynamic structural behavior of pressure vessels due to pressure pulse initiated by implosion of neighbouring airbacked equipments including Unmanned Underwater Vehicles (UUV), sensor system, and so on were dealt with for the structural design and safety assessment of pressure hulls of submarine. The dynamic buckling and collapse responses of pressure vessel in deep sea were investigated considering the effects of initial hydrostatic pressure and fluid-structure interactions. The governing equations for circular cylindrical shells were formulated theoretically assuming a relatively simple displacement fields and the derived nonlinear simultaneous ordinary differential equations were analysed by developed numerical solution algorithm. Finally, the introduced safety assessment procedures for the dynamic buckling behaviors of pressure hulls due to implosion pressure pulse were validated by comparing the theoretical analysis results with those of experiments for examples of simple cylinders.

  • Precision servomechanisms are widely used in machine tool, semiconductor and flat panel display industries. It is important to improve contouring accuracy in high-precision servomechanisms. In order to improve the contouring accuracy, cross-coupled control systems have been proposed. However, it is very difficult to select the controller parameters because cross-coupled control systems are multivariable, nonlinear and time-varying systems. In this paper, in order to improve contouring accuracy of a biaxial servomechanism, a cross-coupled controller is adopted and an optimal tuning procedure based on an integrated design concept is proposed. Strict mathematical modeling and identification process of a servomechanism are performed. An optimal tuning problem is formulated as a nonlinear constrained optimization problem including the relevant controller parameters of the servomechanism. The objective of the optimal tuning procedure is to minimize both the contour error and the settling time while satisfying constraints such as the relative stability and maximum overshoot conditions, etc. The effectiveness of the proposed optimal tuning procedure is verified through experiments.

  • Footstep detection using seismic sensors for security is a very meaningful task, but readings can easily fluctuate due to noise in outdoor environment. We propose NSSC method based on nonlinear spectral subtraction and cross-correlation using prime footstep model signal as a footstep signal refining process that enhances the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and attenuates noise. After de-noising, a detection event classification method is presented as further refining process to ensure that the detection result is a footstep. To validate the proposed algorithm, representative experiments including sunny and rainy-day cases are demonstrated.

  • This paper presents an adaptive fuzzy control scheme for nonlinear helicopter system which has uncertainty or unknown variations in parameters. The proposed adaptive fuzzy controller is a model reference adaptive controller. The parameters of fuzzy controller are adjusted so that the plant output tracks the reference model output. It is shown that the adaptive law guarantees the stability of the closed-loop system by using Lyapunov function. Several experiments with a small model helicopter having parameter variations are performed to show the usefulness of the proposed adaptive fuzzy controller.

  • In an experimental and analytical study on the structural behavior of slender circular steel-concrete composite columns, eleven specimens were tested to investigate the effects of three ways to apply a load to a column. The load was applied eccentrically to the concrete section, to the steel section or to the entire section. Three-dimensional nonlinear finite element models were established and verified with the experimental results. The analytical models were also used to study how the behavior of the column was influenced by the bond strength between the steel tube and the concrete core and the by confinement of the concrete core offered by the steel tube. The results obtained from the tests and the finite element analyses showed that the behavior of the column was greatly influenced by the method used to apply a load to the column section. When relying on just the natural bond, full composite action was achieved only when the load was applied to the entire section of the column. Furthermore, because of the slenderness effects the columns did not exhibit the beneficial effects of composite behavior in terms of increased concrete strength due to the confinement.
