  • High-frequency combustion instability results from a feedback coupling between the unsteady heat release rate and the acoustic waves formed resonantly in the combustion chamber. It can be modeled as thermoacoustic problems with various degrees of the assumptions and simplifications. This paper presents numerical analysis of self-excited combustion instabilities in a variable-length lean-premixed combustor and designs of passive control devices such as baffle and acoustic resonators in a framework of 3-D FEM Helmholtz solver. Nonlinear behaviors such as steep-fronted shock waves and a finite amplitude limit cycle are also investigated with a compressible flow simulation technique.

  • In this paper, maxwell 3D finite element analysis program (Ansoft) was used to obtain electromagnetic properties associated with the coil and nearby structures. The electromagnetic emitting properties were presented by 3D simulation software operated at 250 kHz and some specific conditions. The electromagnetic field in the ferrite core was shown to be high and symmetric. An LS-100 luminance meter and a Darsa-2000 spectrum analyzer were used in the experiment. According to data on the lamp tested using high magnetic field ferrite, the optical and thermal wave fields were shown to be high around the ring-shaped electrodeless fluorescent lamp. The optical or light field was high at the center of the bulb rather than around the ferrite core. The light conditions of the bulb were assumed to be complex, depending on the condition of the filler gas, the volume of the bulb, and the frequency of the inverter. Our results have shown coupling between the gas plasma and the field of the light emitted to be nonlinear.

  • Automotive NVH on brake operation is mainly caused by a coupling action of vehicle speed and inter parts friction and its frequency occurs over a broad band of 0.1 kHz~10 kHz. Especially, squeal noise, being a self-excited vibration generated by friction force between drum and lining, occurs over 1 kHz and consequently dynamic instability is induced when friction energy is applied to a brake vibration system. The squeal strongly depends on nonlinear properties influenced by the material of lining, velocity of vehicle, and the dynamic properties of a brake system. The dynamic properties are considered as a main influential design factor to squeal noise, however the analysis of the properties are rarely facilitated due to arbitrariness of shape by wearing down. In this paper, we research generating tendency of squeal noise through complex eigenvalue analysis, tracking drum brake's unstable modes in accordance with the wear shape of drum and lining such as tapered and bellmouth shape, and analyze computed unstable modes by variable shapes.

  • This paper presents a control strategy for voltage-controlled multi-function distributed generation (DG) combined with an active power filter (APF) and a reactive power compensator. The control strategy is based on droop control. As a result of local nonlinear loads, the voltages of the point of common coupling (PCC) and the currents injecting into the grid by the DG are distorted. The power quality of the PCC voltage can be enhanced by using PCC harmonic compensation. In addition, with the PCC harmonic compensation, the DG offers a low-impedance path for harmonic currents. Therefore, the DG absorbs most of the harmonic currents generated by local loads, and the total harmonic distortion (THD) of the grid connected current is dramatically reduced. Furthermore, by regulating the reactive power of the DG, the magnitude of the PCC voltage can be maintained at its nominal value. The performance of the DG with the proposed control strategy is analyzed by bode diagrams. Finally, simulation and experimental results verify the proposed control strategy.

  • This paper analyse the mechanical characteristics of geometrical and material nonlinearity behavior of cylindrical shell roofs subjected to a concentrated load. The shell elements were modeled using 'NISA2016' software as 3D general shell element and 3D composite shell element. The 3D shell element includes deformation due to bending, membrane, membrane-bending coupling and shear perpendicular to the grain effects is suited for modeling moderately thick or thin general shells and laminated composite shells. And The 3D composite shell element consists of a number of layers of perfectly bonded anisotropic and orthotropic materials. The purpose of this research is to analysis the load-deflection curves considering the combined geometric and material nonlinearity of cylindrical shells. In a shallowed cylindrical shell, snap-through curve can be found.

  • The structural behavior of reinforced concrete coupled shear wall structures is greatly influenced by the behavior of their coupling beams. This paper presents a process of the seismic analysis of reinforced concrete coupled shear wall-frame system linked by hysteretic dampers at each floor. The hysteretic dampers are located at the middle portion of the linked beams which most of the inelastic damage would be concentrated. This study concerned particularly with wall-frame structures that do not twist. The proposed method, which is based on the energy equilibrium method, offers an important design method by the result of increasing energy dissipation capacity and reducing damage to the wall's base. The optimum distribution of yield shear force coefficients is to evenly distribute the damage at dampers over the structural height based on the cumulative plastic deformation ratio of the dissipation device. Nonlinear dynamic analysis indicates that, with a proper set of damping parameters, the wall's dynamic responses can be well controlled. Finally, based on the total plastic strain energy and its trend through the height of the buildings, a prediction equation is suggested.

  • Novel thermo-optically focus-switchable Fresnel zone plates based on phase-change metafilms are designed and analyzed at a visible wavelength (660 nm). By virtue of the large thermo-optic response of vanadium dioxide (VO2) thin film, a phase-change material, four different plasmonic phase-change absorbers are numerically designed as actively tunable Gires-Tournois Al-VO2 metafilms in two and three dimensions. The designed phase-change metafilm unit cells are used as the building blocks of actively focus-switchable Fresnel zone plates with strong focus switching contrast (40%, 83%) and high numerical apertures (1.52, 1.70). The Fresnel zone plates designed in two and three dimensions work as cylindrical and spherical lenses in reflection type, respectively. The coupling between the thermo-optic effect of VO2 and localized plasmonic resonances in the Al nanostructures offer a large degree of freedom in design and high-contrast focus-switching performance based on largely tunable absorption resonances. The proposed method may have great potential in photothermal and electrothermal active optical devices for nonlinear optics, microscopy, 3D scanning, optical trapping, and holographic displays over a wide spectral range including the visible and infrared regimes.

  • The necessity for appropriate management of water resources infrastructures such as reservoirs, levees, and dikes is increasing due to unexpected hydro-climate irregularities and rising water demands. To meet this need, past studies have focused on advancing theoretical optimization algorithms such as nonlinear programming, dynamic programming (DP), and genetic programming. Yet, the optimally derived theoretical solutions are limited to be directly implemented in making release decisions in the real-world systems for a variety of reasons. This study first aims to comparatively analyze the two prominent optimization methods, DP and evolutionary multi-objective direct policy search (EMODPS), under historical inflow series using K-fold cross validation. A total of six optimization models are formed each with a specific formulation. Then, one of the optimization models was coupled with the actual zone-based hedging rule that has been adopted in practice. The proposed methodology was applied to Boryeong Dam located in South Korea with conflicting objectives between supply and demand. As a result, the EMODPS models demonstrated a better performance than the DP models in terms of proximity to the ideal. Moreover, the incorporation of the real-world policy with the optimal solutions improved in all indices in terms of the supply side, while widening the range of the trade-off between frequency and magnitude measured in the sides of demand. The results from this study once again highlight the necessity of closing the gap between the theoretical solutions with the real-world implementable policies.

  • The tension leg platform (TLP) is one of the compliant structures which are generally used for deep water oil exploration. With respect to the horizontal degrees of freedom, it behaves like a floating structure moored by vertical tethers which are pretension due to the excess buoyancy of the platform, whereas with respect to the vertical degrees of freedom, it is stiff and resembles a fixed structure and is not allowed to float freely. In the current study, a numerical study for square TLP using modified Morison equation was carried out in the time domain with water particle kinematics using Airy's linear wave theory to investigate the effect of changing the tether tension force on the stiffness matrix of TLP's, the dynamic behavior of TLP's; and on the fatigue stresses in the cables. The effect was investigated for different parameters of the hydrodynamic forces such as wave periods, and wave heights. The numerical study takes into consideration the effect of coupling between various degrees of freedom. The stiffness of the TLP was derived from a combination of hydrostatic restoring forces and restoring forces due to cables. Nonlinear equation was solved using Newmark's beta integration method. Only uni-directional waves in the surge direction was considered in the analysis. It was found that for short wave periods (i.e., 10 sec.), the surge response consisted of small amplitude oscillations about a displaced position that is significantly dependent on tether tension force, wave height; whereas for longer wave periods, the surge response showed high amplitude oscillations that is significantly dependent on wave height, and that special attention should be given to tethers fatigue because of their high tensile static and dynamic stress.

  • This paper presents polar converting logic(PCL) of BTT missiles against slowly moving or stationary targets. A guidance commands expressed in rectangular coordinates must be converted in the form of polar coordinates for BTT control. Since conventional PCL has nonlinear and discontinuous function, the missiles may lose controllability when pitch acceleration command equals to zero. Further, roll coupling may have a serious unstabilizing influence on homing guidance with two gimbals seeker. In this paper, a linear homotopy equation is introduced to improve the controllability and a command following performance at midcourse phase. We also design a PCL which is less sensitive to pitch acceleration command so that it may improve the stability of the homing loop. To substantiate our conclusion, results of the computer simulation have been illustrated.
