  • A new discretization method for nonlinear system with time-delay is proposed. It is based on the well-known Taylor series expansion and the zero-order hold (ZOH) assumption. We know that a discretization of linear system can be obtained with the ZOH assumption and within the sampling interval. A similar line of thinking is available in nonlinear case. The mathematical structure of the new discretization method is explored and under the structure, the sampled-data representation of nonlinear system including time-delay is computed. Provided that the discrete form of the single input nonlinear system with time-delay is derived, this result is easily extended to nonlinear system with multi-input time-delay. For simplicity two inputs are considered in this study. It is enough to generalize that of multiple inputs. Finally, the time-discretization of non-affine nonlinear system with time-delay is investigated for apply all nonlinear system

  • This paper presents a nonlinear controller design for optical disk drive systems to improve anti-shock performance. The nonlinear anti-shock controller is added parallel to the original linear servo control loop. In the previous work, dead-zone nonlinear element is used for nonlinear controller and PID control method is used for linear controller. Although this strategy improves anti-shock performance, it has a narrow stability bound. In this paper, we propose dead-zone with saturation nonlinear element for the nonlinear controller. Since this nonlinear element improves stability margin, we can use higher gain of dead-zone than the controller with dead-zone only. In the linear controller design, we show that lead-lag control has improved stability margin over PID control. Numerical simulation results show that the proposed method can get better performance to the external shock than previously proposed method.

  • Temperature control of an enclosed thermal system which has many applications including Rapid Thermal Processing (RTP) of semiconductor wafers showed an input-constraint violation for nonlinear controllers due to inherent strong coupling between the elements [1]. In this paper, a constrained nonlinear optimal control design is developed, which accommodates input constraints using the linear algebraic equivalence of the nonlinear controllers, for the temperature control of an enclosed thermal process. First, it will be shown that design of nonlinear controllers is equivalent to solving a set of linear algebraic equations-the linear algebraic equivalence of nonlinear controllers (LAENC). Then an input-constrained nonlinear optimal controller is designed based on that LAENC using the constrained linear least squares method. Through numerical simulations, it is demonstrated that the proposed controller achieves the equivalent performances to the classical nonlinear controllers with less total energy consumption. Moreover, it generates the practical control solution, in other words, control solutions do not violate the input-constraints.

  • In this paper, we propose a nonlinear variable PID controller using a cell-mediated immune response. An immune feedback response is based on the functioning of biological T-cells. An immune feedback response and P-controller of conventional PID controllers resemble each other in role and mechanism. Therefore, we extend immune feedback mechanism to nonlinear PE controller. And in order to choose the optimal nonlinear PID controller games, we also propose the on-line tuning algorithm of nonlinear functions parameters in immune feedback mechanism. The trained parameters of nonlinear functions are adapted to the variations of the system parameters and any command velocity. And the adapted parameters obtained outputs of nonlinear functions with an optimal control performance. To verify performances of the proposed control systems, the speed control of nonlinear BC motor is performed. The simulation results show that the proposed control systems are effective in tracking a command velocity under system variations.

  • Analyses of dynamic models which were one and two degrees of freedom, and had the nonlinear springs and dampings with certain polynomial functions were performed from SIMULINK in MATLAB. Those consisted of 12 programs and were built on the basis of the preceding programs fur the linear dynamic simulations. However the programs for the nonlinear simulations were quite different from those f3r the linear ones, and showed the results of the analyses in real time with animating. It was found that the programs would help us to solve any kind of nonlinear dynamic simulation with one and two degrees of freedom. Especially, the simulations for 1 DOF system with cubic nonlinear spring farce showed the results for Duffing's equation, of which phenomena were jump-up and jump-down. It will be applied to the dynamic simulation of the car seat vibration with a passenger, of which model has the equivalent nonlinear springs and is two degrees of freedom.

  • An Arctic Spar is characterized by its conical shape near the waterline. In this case, the nonlinear effects from its irregular hull shape would be significant if there is either a large amplitude floater motion or steep wave conditions. Therefore, in this paper, the nonlinear effects of an Arctic Spar are numerically investigated by introducing a weakly nonlinear time-domain model that considers the time dependent hydrostatic restoring stiffness and Froude-Krylov forces. Through numerical simulations under multiple regular and irregular wave conditions, the nonlinear behavior of the Arctic Spar is clearly observed, but it is not shown in the linear analysis. In particular, it is found that the nonlinear Froude-Krylov force plays an important role when the wave frequency is close to the heave natural frequency. In addition, the nonlinear hydrostatic restoring stiffness causes the structure's unstable motion at a half of heave natural period.

  • The main objective of this paper is to develop the finite element study on the nonlinear free vibration of functionally graded nanocomposite spherical shells reinforced with graphene platelets under the first-order shear deformation shell theory and von Kármán nonlinear kinematic relations. The governing equations are presented by introducing the full asymmetric nonlinear strain-displacement relations followed by the constitutive relations and energy functional. The extended Halpin-Tsai model is utilized to specify the overall Young's modulus of the nanocomposite. Then, the finite element formulation is derived and the quadrilateral 8-node shell element is implemented for finite element discretization. The nonlinear sets of dynamic equations are solved by the use of the harmonic balance technique and iterative method to find the nonlinear frequency response. Several numerical examples are represented to highlight the impact of involved factors on the large-amplitude vibration responses of nanocomposite spherical shells. One of the main findings is that for some geometrical and material parameters, the fundamental vibrational mode shape is asymmetric and the axisymmetric formulation cannot be appropriately employed to model the nonlinear dynamic behavior of nanocomposite spherical shells.

  • Nonlinear response structural optimization is performed using equivalent loads (NROEL). Nonlinear response optimization is extremely cost because many nonlinear analyses are required. In NROEL, the external loads are transformed to the equivalent loads (EL) for linear static analysis and linear response optimization is carried out based on the EL in a cyclic manner until the convergence criteria are satisfied. EL is the load set which generates the same response field of linear analysis as that of nonlinear analysis. The primitive from of theory has been published. In this research, the theory is investigated with large scale example problems. Four examples are solved by using NROEL. Conventional optimization with sensitivity analysis using the finite difference method (FDM) is also applied to the same examples. Moreover, response surface optimization method is applied to the last two examples. The results of the optimizations are compared. In nonlinear response optimization of large scale problems, hundreds (or even thousands) of nonlinear analyses are expected to satisfy the convergence criteria. However, in nonlinear response optimization using equivalent loads, only tens of nonlinear analyses are required. The results are discussed and the usefulness of NROEL is presented.

  • Compared with the identification of linear structures, it is more challenging to conduct identification of nonlinear structure systems, especially when the locations of structural nonlinearities are not clear in structural systems. Moreover, it is highly desirable to develop methods of parametric identification using partial measurements of structural responses for practical application. To cope with these issues, an identification method is proposed in this paper for the detection and parametric identification of structural nonlinear restoring forces using only partial measurements of structural responses. First, an equivalent linear structural system is proposed for a nonlinear structure and the locations of structural nonlinearities are detected. Then, the parameters of structural nonlinear restoring forces at the locations of identified structural nonlinearities together with the linear part structural parameters are identified by the extended Kalman filter. The proposed method simplifies the identification of nonlinear structures. Numerical examples of the identification of two nonlinear multi-story shear frames and a planar nonlinear truss with different nonlinear models and locations are used to validate the proposed method.
