  • The main objectives of this study were to identify from literature review the potential sources and to provide a preliminary national emission inventory for the unintentionally produced polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) (i.e., by - product PCBs). In Korea, fuel combustion, waste combustion, thermal industrial processes, and transportation were identified as potential sources of by -product PCB s. According to the availability of the emission factors and/or activity data, emission inventory could be assessed only for fuel combustion, waste combustion, steel industry, non-ferrous industry, and non-metallurgical industry. The total national emission of by-product PCBs was estimated to be 1087kg for the year 2000. The preliminary estimation further indicated that the steel manufacturing was the single dominant emission category, contributing 93% to the total emission. Of the steel manufacturing processes, the contribution of the electric arc furnace was about 80% of the total emission. Due to high uncertainty associated with both the emission factors and activity statistics, the emission estimates in this study are likely to contain significant errors. However, the results of the present work could serve the first step toward future efforts to establish national source and emission inventories of by-product PCBs.

  • Among the non-traditional machining methods, Abrasive waterjet machining process shows big promise in drilling difficult-to-machine materials due to its numerous advantages such as absence of heat affect zone and thermal distortion. Acoustic emission signal technique is used to understand about material removal mechanisms during abrasive waterjet drilling process. More information about the drilling process is derived through frequency decomposition of auto regressive moving average modeling representing acoustic emission signals.

  • Nowadays, many configurations and applications of small atmospheric plasma source have been investigated with growing interest, as it provides the bacteria inactivation, the surface modification and removal of unwanted small regions, and so on. In this paper, the non-thermal micro plasma source under atmospheric pressure by means of submicrosecond pulse voltage waveforms is suggested. Plasma operates in helium is appears as a small (sub-mm) glow at the tip of a plasma gun. Electrical measurements show that the plasma source operates at low voltage (about 500V) and the power consumption is about 1W at 25kHz. Moreover, the emission spectrum shows the relatively higher emission intensity of oxygen particles than those of helium and nitrogen.

  • Observations with EUVE, ROSAT, and BeepoSAX have shown that some clusters of galaxies produce intense EUV emission. These findings have produced considerable interest; over 100 papers have been published on this topic in the refereed literature. A notable suggestion as to the source of this radiation is that it is a 'warm' (106 K) intracluster medium which, if present, would constitute the major baryonic component of the universe. A more recent variation of this theme is that this material is 'warm-hot' intergalactic material condensing onto clusters. Alternatively, inverse Compton scattering of low energy cosmic rays against cosmic microwave background photons has been proposed as the source of this emission. Various origins of these particles have been posited, including an old (${\~}$Giga year) population of cluster cosmic rays; particles associated with relativistic jets in the cluster; and cascading particles produced by shocks from sub-cluster merging. The observational situation has been quite uncertain with many reports of detections which have been subsequently contradicted by analyses carried out by other groups. Evidence supporting a thermal and a non-thermal origin has been reported. The existing EUV, FUV, and optical data will be briefly reviewed and clarified. Direct observational evidence from a number of different satellites now rules out a thermal origin for this radiation. A new examination of subtle details of the EUV data suggests a new source mechanism: inverse Compton scattered emission from secondary electrons in the cluster. This suggestion will be discussed in the context of the data.

  • The development of a new material which should be continuously usable under severe environment of very high temperature has been urgently requested. The conventional thermal barrier coating(TBC) is a two layer coating, but a composition and a microstructure of functionally graded material(FGM) are varied continuously from place to place in ways designed to provide it with the maximum function of mitigating the induced thermal stress. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the heat-resistant characteristics by thermal shock of laser and furnace heating. The fracture behaviors of non-FGM(NFGM) and FGM were investigated based on acoustic emission(AE) technique during thermal shock test. Therefore, it can be concluded that FGM gives higher thermal resistance compared to NFGM by AE signal and fracture surface analysis.

  • The detailed chemistry with reaction mechanism of GRI 2.11, which consists of 49 species and 279 elementary reactions, have been numerically conducted to investigate the flame structure and NO emission characteristics in a non-premixed counterflow flame of blended fuel of $H_2/CO_2/Ar$. The combination of $H_2,\;CO_2$, and Ar as fuel is selected to clearly display the contribution of hydrocarbon products to flame structure and NO emission characteristics due to the breakdown of $CO_2$. Radiative heat loss term is involved to correctly describe the flame dynamics especially at low strain rates. All mechanisms including thermal, $NO_2,\;N_2O$, and Fenimore are also taken into account to separately evaluate the effects of $CO_2$ addition on NO emission characteristics. The increase of added $CO_2$ quantity causes flame temperature to fall since at high strain rates diluent effect is prevailing and at low strain rates the breakdown of $CO_2$ produces relatively populous hydrocarbon products and thus the existence of hydrocarbon products inhibits chain branching. It is also found that the ratio of the contribution by Fenimore mechanism to that by thermal mechanism in the total mole production rate becomes much larger with increase in the $CO_2$ quantity and strain rate, even though the absolute quantity of NO production is deceased. Consequently, as strain rate and $CO_2$ quantity increase, NO production by Fenimore mechanism is remarkably augmented.

  • The existence and extent of non-thermal phenomena in galaxy clusters is now well established. A key question in our understanding of these phenomena is the origin of the relativistic electrons which may be constrained by the modelling of the fine radio properties of radio halos and of their statistics. In this paper we argue that present data favour a scenario in which the emitting electrons in the intracluster medium (ICM) are reaccelerated in situ on their way out. An overview of turbulent-particle acceleration models is given focussing on recent time-dependent calculations which include a full coupling between particles and MHD waves.

  • In order to develop the commercial frequency (60Hz) plasma torch of small capacity for material cutting, welding and other industrial heating, the A.C plasma jet generator of non-transfered type is made domestically and the electrode configurations of plasma torch are composed of two kinds of electrodes W-C and W-Cu, combined by thermal emission and field emission electrode materials. In this paper, the characteristics of input power, thermal efficiency, electrode consumption, the flame and forms of arc voltage and arc current for A.C plasma torch are investigated in relation to such variables as arc current, argon flow and magnetic field intensity to obtain the basic design data necessary to A.C plasma jet generator. The result are as follows; (1)The input power, thermal efficiency and electrode consumption are influenced greatly by argon flow, magnetic field intensity and nozzle materials. (2)A.C arc voltage and current are non-symmetrial, involving D.C Component. Due to this current of D.C Component, transformer core is saturated and a large abnormal current flows into the primary winding coil. In order to prevent this abnormal current flow, a condenser must be connected in series to the main discharge circuit. (3)The stability and sharpness of jet flame are improved more in the torch of W-C electrode configuration than in the torch of W-Cu electrode configuration.

  • SPATE(Stress Pattern Analysis by Thermal Emission) can be effectively used to analyze the stress distributions of isotropic structure under the repeated load by non-contact. In this research, the measuring method and the measuring concept of stress intensity factor of isotropic material by SPATE are suggested. The validity of the method and the concept was certified through SPATE experiment.

  • Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm-II (NSGA-II) is applied for solving Combined Economic Emission Dispatch (CEED) problem with valve-point loading of thermal generators. This CEED problem with valve-point loading is a nonlinear, constrained multi-objective optimization problem, with power balance and generator capacity constraints. The valve-point loading introduce ripples in the input-output characteristics of generating units and make the CEED problem as a nonsmooth optimization problem. To validate its effectiveness of NSGA-II, two benchmark test systems, IEEE 30-bus and IEEE 118-bus systems are considered. To compare the Pareto-front obtained using NSGA-II, reference Pareto-front is generated using multiple runs of Real Coded Genetic Algorithm (RCGA) with weighted sum of objectives. Comparison with other optimization techniques showed the superiority of the NSGA-II approach and confirmed its potential for solving the CEED problem. Numerical results show that NSGA-II algorithm can provide Pareto-front in a single run with good diversity and convergence. An approach based on Technique for Ordering Preferences by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) is applied on non-dominated solutions obtained to determine Best Compromise Solution (BCS).
