  • This study was investigated the effects of exercise and supplementation of L-carnitine and antioxidants on hepatic mitochondrial function, especially oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS). Isolated hepatic mitochondria from 4 rat groups were functionally tested by an analysis of respiration and the coupling of this process to ATP synthesis in the presence of ADP. Four groups were non-trained, non-supplemented group (NTNS), non-trained, supplemented group (NTS), long term-trained, non-supplemented group (LTNS) , and long term-trained, supplemented group (LTS). The trained rats run on a treadmill (grade 10°,20 m/min) for 60min/day for 8 weeks. The supplemented rats were treated with L-carnitine (0.5% diet), vitamin E(0.5mg/g BW), vitamin C (0.5mg/g BW) and melatonin (1 $\mu$ g/g BW) for 8 weeks. There were exercise effects on improving mitochondrial OXPHOS. Within non-supplemented groups, exercised rats resulted in a significant decrease in state 4 oxygen consumption, which increased the respiratory control (RC) ratio and ADP : O (P/O) ratio. There were supplementation effects on improving mitochondrial OXPHOS, too. Within non-exercised rats, supplemented rats resulted in a significant decrease in state 4 oxygon consumption. which increased the RC ratio and P/O ratio. There were additive effects of exercise and supplementation on OXPHOS. Within supplemented rats, exercise resulted in an increase in RC ratio. Significant effects of exercise-supplement interaction on improving OXPHOS were identified. It suggests that exercise and supplementation of L-carnitine and antioxidants might improve more efficiently the impaired OXPHOS efficiency in mitochondrial dysfunction that recognized as is an important cause of degenerative diseases. • The objective of the study was to determine the effect of Acacia karroo supplementation on growth, ultimate pH, colour and cooking losses of meat from indigenous Xhosa lop-eared goats. Eighteen castrated 4-month-old kids were used in the study until slaughter. The kids were subdivided in two treatment groups A. karroo supplemented (AK) and non-supplemented (NS). The supplemented goats were given 200 g per head per d of fresh A. karroo leaves. The kids were slaughtered on d 60 and sample cuttings for meat quality assessment were taken from the Longistimus dorsi muscle. The supplemented kids had higher (p<0.05) growth rates than the non-supplemented ones. The meat from the A. karroo supplemented goats had lower (p<0.05) ultimate pH and cooking loss than the meat from the non-supplemented goats. Acacia karroo supplemented goats produced higher (p<0.05) $b^*$ (yellowness) value, but supplementation had no significant effect on $L^*$ (lightness) and $a^*$ (redness) of the meat. Therefore, A. karroo supplementation improved growth performance and the quality of meat from goats.

  • The effects of resistant starch (RS) and non-starch polysaccharide (NSP) addition on the properties of hard wheat flour were investigated. Total dietary fiber (TDF) levels of various NSP ranged from 78.3-100.0%, but TDF and RS levels of autoclaved RS3 and cross-linked RS4 were 16.1 and 35.0% and 13.2 and 90.9%, respectively. DF-supplemented flour increased swelling power, but RS4-supplemented flour exhibited the lowest it. Solubility increased with the addition of pectin and RS3, but decreased with the addition of cellulose and RS4. RS-supplemented flour had increased lightness (L), but decreased values of redness (a) and yellowness (b). RS3 and pectin increased the dough development time, but RS4, cellulose, and chitosan decreased it. The water absorptions of pectin- and RS4-supplemented flours increased, however the dough stability decreased. The initial pasting temperatures of RS- and NSP-supplemented flours increased regardless of amount added, but the maximum peak viscosity decreased for all except the pectin-supplemented flour.

  • This experiment was conducted to compare the effects of vitamin C supplemented in either feed or water on the performance and carcass characteristics of broilers during the hot season. For a 6 week feeding trial, a total of 330 broiler chicks (Ross, 4 d old, average 57 g BW) were alloted to five treatments. The treatments of vitamin C (VC) supplementation were 1) 0 ppm VC, 2) 10 ppm VC in feed, 3) 20 ppm VC in feed, 4) 5 ppm VC in water and 5) 10 ppm VC in water. During the starter phase (0-3 week), chicks on non-supplemented group grew slower (p<0.01) than the supplemented ones, and a similar trend was also noted during finisher stage and the overall stage. Feed intake was significantly (p<0.05) higher in supplemented groups and higher when fed in feed as compared with water during all stages. But feed conversion efficiency was significantly improved in non-supplemented groups compared to supplemented ones in finisher and overall stage. The digestibility of gross energy and ether extract was significantly (p<0.05) higher during starter phase in supplemented, given in feed, and at higher levels as compared with non-supplemented, given in water, and at lower levels, respectively. The bone resistance was significantly (p<0.05) higher in supplemented, supplied in feed groups as compared with their counterparts. Except breast meat, the dressing percentage and abdominal fat were also higher in supplemented group and the dressing percentage was significantly (p<0.05) higher in VC supplemented in feed as to water, but no effect of supplementation was noticed on meat color when compared between the methods of feeding (feed vs. water). The levels of VC in plasma and liver increased linearly, as the level of supplementation both in feed and water increased and it was significantly (p<0.05) higher in feed group as compared with water group. It can be concluded that, retention and availability of vitamin C in feed was higher than those in water, and supplementation of VC during summer was beneficial for poultry.

  • Objectives : Anemia is the center of interest in every maternity, both during pregnancy and lactation. The oriental postpartum care has one principle : to invigorate Qi and blood greatly. In this study, we seek to confirm that most sufferers of anemia recover under oriental postpartum care. To assure that this study had significance in non-iron supplement, we made a comparative study between oral iron supplement and non-iron supplement groups in oriental postpartum care. Methods : A comparative study was conducted to discern the difference in hemoglobin change between admission and after 2 weeks under the circumstances of 30 oral iron supplemented and 38 non-iron supplemented women who were admitted to the hospital attached to Woosuk University Oriental Medical College from April to August 2001 for postpartum care. Results : The mean hemoglobin level of after 2 weeks was 11.95 mg% (p<0.001). The mean hemoglobin level after 2 weeks was 11.65 mg% and 12.18 mg% in the iron supplemented and non-iron supplemented women respectively. The difference between the two groups was not significant. Conclusions : Oriental postpartum care overcomes anemia significantly in postpartum maternity. This is confirmed significantly under the non-iron supplement.

  • This research was conducted to compare the effects of vitamin E (VE) when supplemented in either feed or water on the performance and meat quality of broilers. For a six-week feeding trial, a total of 330 broiler chicks were allotted to five treatments. The treatments were 1) 0 ppm VE, 2) 10 ppm VE in feed, 3) 20 ppm VE in feed, 4) 5 ppm VE in water and 5) 10 ppm VE in water. During the starter phase (0-3 weeks) chicks on non-supplemented groups grew slower (p<0.05) than the supplemented ones and the same trend was followed during the finisher (4-6 weeks) and overall period (0-6 weeks). The feed intake was significantly higher in feed supplemented groups as compared with water-supplemented groups and at higher levels as compared with lower levels of supplementation. The nutrient digestibility studies conducted after 15 and 35 days on the feeding trial showed that the digestibility of all nutrients was significantly (p<0.05) higher in supplemented groups than the non-supplemented one. The dressing percentage was higher in supplemented groups, when fed in feed and at higher levels when compared with their respective counterparts. Similar trends were noticed with respect to bone resistance. The calcium and phosphorus contents in tibia were also significantly (p<0.05) higher in supplemented, feed fed groups at higher levels than other groups. The TBARS values measured after 5 and 10 days of storage, which reflect the degree of oxidation, showed significantly lower levels in supplemented diets. The plasma and muscle vitamin E levels also showed a positive linear correlation with the levels supplemented both in feed and water. Overall it can be inferred that supplementation of VE was beneficial and there was not much difference observed when fed either in feed or water at the levels measured in the present study.

  • On the assumption that the supplementation of certain nutrients or foods to the rice diet (low protein, low fat, and low vitamins) may decrease, to some extent, the degree of suffering from abnormal environments, such as vibration, noises, gases, dusts, smog etc. a series of experiments were started. As the first report the nutrition under vibration was studied in this experiment. Sixty (60) young growing male rats weighing about 65 grams were used, grouping to five (5) groups, twelve (12) rats each group. They were fed on the following five (5) experimental diets: rice diet (basal diet), rice diet+casein, rice diet+vitamins, rice $diet+{\alpha}-tocopherol$, and rice diet+ginseng powder (see the tables 1 and 2) for the period of 14 weeks experiment. During the experiment period the half number of the rats of each group were exposed to the three (3) hours vibration every day. The protective effect of each diet against the vibration may be summarized as follows. 1. The growth of rice diet group was impaired significantly under vibration, However, those of other groups (protein-supplemented, vitamin-supplemented, ${\alpha}-tocopherol-supplemented$ and ginseng-supplemented groups) were impaired much less compared with rice diet group. 2. The feed efficiency of the rice diet group was decreased significantly under vibration. It is estimated that the biological availability of nutrients was impaired under this environment. On the other hand, the feed efficiencies of protein supplemented, of vitamin supplemented, and of ginseng supplemented groups were not decreased under vibration, statistically. 3. There is tendency that the food spillages of vibration groups are higher than those of non-vibration groups. Especially it seems true in the case of rice diet group. The food spillage may be, to some extent, related with mental nervousness of animals. From the point that the food spillage of ginseng supplemented group is significantly lower than those of other groups it is thought ginseng acts some good role in protecting nervous system from suffering from vibration. 4. In all groups except protein supplemented group, liver fat of vibration group tends to be higher than that of non-vibration group. 5. It shows that, in general, the serum alkaline phosphatase activity of the vibration group is significantly higher than that of the non-vibration group. It seems that there may be, to some extent, corelation between the amount of liver fat and serum alkaline phosphatase activity. 6. There is tendency that, in rice diet group, the organs of vibration group are smaller than those of non-vibration group, especially lung is so. It is thought that this may be due to the poor growth of whole body size in vibration group.

  • In this paper, we introduce and study the notions of weakly ⊕-supplemented modules, weakly D2 modules and weakly D2-covers. A right R-module M is called weakly ⊕-supplemented if every non-small submodule of M has a supplement that is not essential in M, and module MR is called weakly D2 if it satisfies the condition: for every s ∈ S and s ≠ 0, if there exists n ∈ ℕ such that sn ≠ 0 and Im(sn) is a direct summand of M, then Ker(sn) is a direct summand of M. The class of weakly ⊕-supplemented-modules and weakly D2 modules contains ⊕-supplemented modules and D2 modules, respectively, and they are equivalent in case M is uniform, and projective, respectively.

  • Plasma concentrations of zinc and copper were measured in 59 non-pregnant women and 105 pregnant women(12 ; early pregant, 93 ; late pregnant) to estimate and compare both groups and to detect the effects of iron supplementation on the plasma zinc and copper concentrations in the pregant women. The mean plasma zinc concentration of the early pregnant group was not significantly different with those of the non-pregnant group. But in contrast, the mean plasma zinc concentration of the late pregnant group was significantly lower than those of the non-pregnant and early pregnant group. Mean plasma copper concentration were significantly elevated in ealry pregnant group and doubled in late pregnant compared to non-pregnant. In Fe supplemented group, mean plasma zinc concentrations were lower and mean plasma copper higher than those of Fe non-supplemented group. It appeared that Fe supplementation had effects on the decrease of plasma zinc concentrations in pregnancy.
