This study was carried out to produce the characteristics of pollutant loads caused by a cherry tree plot as a nonpoint sources(NPS) unit in agricultural areas. The relationship between rainfall and runoff didn't show a good coefficient with 0.5. Despite precipitation amount was less than 20 mm, runoff occurred with $0.5\;m^3$ because of high rainfall intensity of 8.8 mm/hr. In contrast, runoff was not occurred when precipitation amount was 47.4 mm in one case. In that case the primal effect on runoff was not precipitation amount. Correlation between load of pollutants such as BOD, COD, TN and TP and runoff' volumes showed significantly positive values which were more than r = 0.92 for all pollutants except SS(r = 0.71). SS could be a proper factor for estimating pollutant loads of BOD, COD, TN and TP because of a high correlation more than r = 0.73 between SS load and pollutant loads of BOD, COD, TN and TP. Both Organics and nutrient pollutants could be reduced if we control SS in runoff. The highest concentration of TN was detected in the event which was affected by fertilization activities directly. Therefore fertilization must be considered as a function of impact parameters on TN load in agricultural areas.

The sources of the pollution on a river are divided into two classes, one the point source and the other non-point source. In raining, especially, the non-point source discharged from paddy, residential area, road ${\cdots}$ etc have correlations with the land use. This study was carried out to find out the model to estimate the quality of water in a river according to the land use. Land use data (Pungse-Myeoun and Kwangduk-Myeoun in Chonan) were produced from Landsat TM (Thematic Mapper) and topographic map. Total nitrogen(TN) and total phosphorus(TP) general indices for the degree of pollution in river were measured during 11 months. Correlations between two variables(Land use and Pollutants(TN, TP)) were explained by the regression coefficient. As a result of this study, we found that among the five types of land use, the residential area, store area and paddy have significant effects upon the quality of water in a river. The results of this study will be applied to pre-estimate the degree of pollution in river broadly and to offer basic data in establishing the land use plan and the concept on the conservation of the river in rural area.

In this study, rainfall water outlet water quality monitoring was performed on the C industrial complex to evaluate the characteristics of non-point pollutant runoff from the industrial complex during rainfall and to use it as basic data for calculating the load and unit of non-point pollutant. As a result of the IETD analysis, it was selected as a representative rainfall event for simulating non-point pollutants when the rainfall duration was about 21 hours and the rainfall was 26.44mm. Also as a result of monitoring the flow and water quality survey, the first rainfall was 12.2 mm, the rainfall duration was 12 hr, the number of preceding dry days was 3 days, the second rainfall was 22.1 mm, the rainfall duration was 12 hr, and the number of preceding dry days was 7 days.
Growth in population and urbanization has progressively increased the loadings of pollutants from non-point sources as well as point sources. Separated sewer overflows(SSO) have been considered as a major cause of water-quality deterioration of natural water-courses in the vicinity of the heavily urbanized areas. The factors defining the magnitude and occurrence of SSO are site-specific. It is important to know exact properties of pollutants contained in SSO to address water quality impacts that are caused by SSO inputs to the receiving waters. Site and event parameters found to have significant influences on urban runoff pollutant EMCs include total event rainfall, antecedent dry period, rainfall intensity. In this study, a field survey was carried out in some selected areas of Cheongju city. Literature from previous similar studies was consulted and some important factors affecting the runoff characteristics of urban drainage areas were analyzed for some selected survey points. It was found that the factors most affecting BOD are the number of dry days prior to rainfall and the intensity of the rainfall. The factor most affecting CODcr is the number of dry days prior to rainfall. The factors most affecting SS are the amount of rainfall and the number of dry days prior to rainfall. The factor most affecting TN is the amount of rainfall. The factor most affecting TP is the amount of rainfall and the number of dry days prior to rainfall.

Non-point source pollution is the emission source that unspecifically releases pollutants to water system from unspecific places such as cities, agricultural lands, mountains, and construction sites and its discharge path is not easily identified. Also, it is difficult to design and manage the reduction facilities for the emission quantity is primarily affected from weather conditions like rainfall. Since 2006, the significance of non-point source pollution reduction has been grown in Republic of Korea and this reinforces needs for the installation of reduction facilities. However, because the standards for the installation details and reduction efficiency are not clarified by law, people are preferring technologies that do not require particular maintenance and high expenses. The purpose of this study is to examine and maintain the efficiency of non-point source pollutants reduction facility which uses expended polypropylene as a media. The higher the depth of the media, the less range of variations in the reduction efficiency was observed and the final efficiency was also increased. When the media depth was 60 cm, the average reduction efficiency was 94% and 90% where linear velocities were 10 m/hr and 20 m/hr respectively. The results from 180 minutes operation in 10 m/hr and 20 m/hr of linear velocities were slightly different in head loss changes which were caused by media depth variations. The backwash experiments which were conducted in triplicate showed the reduction efficiency decreased as the time went on because of the media clogging. However, it was found that after the backwashing the reduction efficiency was increased as effective as the efficiency of the initial filtration.

In this study, the characteristics of nonpoint pollutant outflow and contribution rate of pollution in Songya-stream mainstream and tributaries were analyzed. Further, water pollution management and improvement measures for pollution-oriented rivers were proposed. An on-site investigation was conducted to determine the inflow of major pollutants into the basin, and it was found that pollutants generated from agricultural land and livestock facilities flowed into the river, resulting in a high concentration of turbid water. Based on the analysis results of the pollution load data calculated through actual measurement monitoring (flow and water quality) and the occurrence and emission load data calculated using the national pollution source survey data, the S3 and S6 were selected as the concerned pollution tributaries in the Songya-stream basin. Results of cluster analysis using Pearson correlation coefficient evaluation and Density based spatial clustering of applications with noise (DBSCAN) technique showed that the S3 and S6 were most consistent with the C2 cluster (a cluster of Songya-stream mainstream owned area) corresponding to the mainstream of Songya-stream. The analysis results of the major pollutants in the concerned pollution tributaries showed that livestock and land pollutants were the major pollutants. Consequently, optimal management techniques such as fertilizer management, water gate management in paddy, vegetated filter strip and livestock manure public treatment were proposed to reduce livestock and land pollutants.

Road runoff water is one of the non-point sources (NPSs) of pollution negatively influencing drinking water source. Numerous road runoff NPS waters have been studied for over the last decade. However, the sources of pollution can be conditional, seasonal, or accidental. Therefore, measurement of pollutant loadings in different site is necessary to estimate the effect of road runoff water. The objective of this study was to examine the quality of road runoff water from a city bridge in Seoul, Korea. This study was conducted for two years to assess annual discharge pollution loads. In this study, key water quality parameters including chemical oxygen demand ($COD_{Cr}$), biochemcial oxygen demand ($BOD_5$), total nitrogen (T-N), total phosphorus (T-P), and suspended solid (SS) were measured at 18 different events. The results showed that typically the pollutant concentrations are higher at the beginning of each event and decrease afterwards. The first 20% of the volume of the runoff from each event is transporting 46% ($COD_{Cr}$), 48% ($BOD_5$), 50% (T-N), 34% (T-P), 30% (SS), respectively. The event mean concentrations (EMCs) were $COD_{Cr}$ (199 mg/L), $BOD_5$ (41.2 mg/L), T-N (7.97 mg/L), T-P (0.42 mg/L) and SS (113 mg/L). Although the results were consistent with the previous study (Barbosa and Hvitved-Jacobsen, 1999), $COD_{Cr}$, $BOD_5$, T-N exhibit a stronger first flush effect compared to the other contaminants.

In this research, it was analyzed that the effect of the non-point source pollution that occurs in the lower reaches of the livestock area. The analysis on the hydro- and polluto-graphs showed that the concentration of pollution gradually increased as the flow rate increased and, after reaching the peak flow rate, the flow rate dropped drastically. For Event Mean Concentration (EMC), in the lower reaches of livestock area, TSS EMC was 146.80~424.95 mg/L, COD EMC 11.64~55.66 mg/L, BOD EMC 6.66~49.88 mg/L, T-N EMC 7.650~43.825 mg/L and T-P EMC 0.711~3.855 mg/L. According to the results of the analysis on the correlations between pollutants, TSS and BOD, COD, T-N and T-P had correlations at a 0.53~0.95 confidence level. In addition, according to the result of the analysis on the correlations between EMC (mg/L) and storm runoff ($m^3$), the correlation was well explained by a Cubic regression. In addition, among the determination coefficients, TSS and T-N were relatively high, at 0.767~0.835 and 0.773~0.901 respectively, which indicates that EMC goes up as the storm runoff increases. Therefore, it is expected that EMC can be forecasted according to the amount of runoff ($m^3$). The results of this research will be a practical information for the assessment of the non-point source pollution that occurs in the lower reaches of the livestock area.
This study was conducted to investigate characteristics of the non-point source pollution under construction and evaluate available pollution control methods. Suspended solid loading is high when soil disturbs by rainfall and this phenomenon is much more severe at the initial stage of construction than at the final one. There are three methods available for erosion and sediment control, which are check dam, silt fence, and geotextile. Check dam and silt fence are for control of suspense solids and geotextile is for preventing soil erosion during rainfall. They can be installed as temporary control facilities at construction sites. From the comparison of those methods, it was found that geotextile method was the most efficient for the runoff control of non-point source pollution. Check dam and silt fence can remove suspense solids by pore spaces to some degree, but the removal of pollutants mainly occurs through sedimentation. Because the temporary control facilities have limited removal efficiency of pollutant, they often cause civil claims and contamination of water environment. Hence, using a pressurized filtration system along with temporary control facilities, highly enhanced treatment efficiency was anticipated. In addition, the loading capacity of these techniques depends on filtration velocity and input loading. And their pre-treatments are necessary for efficient operation.
Non-point pollution source is difficult to control due to uncertain outflow path and emission. So, There are many development and research to Best Management Practices(BMP) established to manage the Non-point pollution source. Besides, various methods of estimated efficiency to exact assessment of BMP is presented. In this study, the impact about length of Grassed Swale on reduction efficiency based on monitoring results of Grassed Swale by length is studied. By estimating Grassed Swale reduction efficiency in a variety of methods, the difference between the methods of estimated efficiency was compared with those that. Estimated efficiency method using ER, SOL, ROL, ROF, SOLF, and ROLF methods is analyzed. EMC analysis result is high inflow and outflow concentration distinction organic compound for nutritive salts The result of efficiency analysis along Grassed Swale length sharply increases in a Grassed Swale inlet. After this increase, the efficiency gradually decreases. This is expected that cistern installed in the end of the front. To obtain a stable reduction efficiency of Grassed Swale, minimum length 30m of Grassed Swale should be enough. Also, in order to efficiently and economically design Grassed Swale, the researches on length of Grassed Swale are needed rather than simple analysis of efficiency.
