  • Presented are the estimation of the probability distribution of fatigue crack growth life and reliability assessment of structures by simulating material resistance to fatigue crack growth along a crack path. The material resistance is treated as a Weibull stochastic process. A non-Gaussian stochastic fields simulation method proposed by shimozuka, et al is applied with the statistical data obtained experimentally. Test results are obtained for $\delta K$ constant amplitude load in tension with stress ratio of R=0.2 and three specimen thicknesses of 6,12 and 18mm. This simulation method is useful to estimate the probability distribution of fatigue crack growth life and the smallest life.

  • In this paper, the purpose is to study a method for detection of crack in clamped-clamped beams using the vibration characteristics. The natural frequency of beam is obtained by FEM and experiment. The governing differential equations of a Timoshenko beam are derived via Hamilton's principle. The two coupled governing differential equations are reduced to one fourth order ordinary differential equation in terms of the flexural displacement. The crack is assumed to be in the first mode of fracture and to be always opened during the vibrations. The differences between the actual and predicted crack positions and sizes are less than 9.8% and 28%, respectively.

  • In this paper, a hybrid scaled boundary finite element and finite volume method (SBFEM-FVM) is proposed for simulating hydraulic-fracture propagation in brittle concrete materials. As a semi-analytical method, the scaled boundary finite element method is introduced for modelling concrete crack propagation under both an external force and water pressure. The finite volume method is employed to model the water within the crack and consider the relationship between the water pressure and the crack opening distance. The cohesive crack model is used to analyse the non-linear fracture process zone. The numerical results are compared with experimental data, indicating that the F-CMOD curves and water pressure changes under different loading conditions are approximately the same. Different types of water pressure distributions are also studied with the proposed coupled model, and the results show that the internal water pressure distribution has an important influence on crack propagation.

  • Typically, the methods of crack detection on concrete structures include some problems, such as a low accuracy and expensive. To solve these problems, we proposed a neural network-based crack search method. The proposed algorithm goes through three convolutions and is classified into crack and non-crack through the softmax layer. As a result of the performance evaluation, cracks can be detected with an accuracy of 99.4 and 99.34 % at the training model and the validation model, respectively.

  • The present paper reports an analytical study of delamination fracture in the Mixed Mode Flexure (MMF) functionally graded beam with considering the material non-linearity. The mechanical behavior of MMF beam is modeled by using a non-linear stress-strain relation. It is assumed that the material is functionally graded along the beam height. Fracture behavior is analyzed by the J-integral approach. Non-linear analytical solution is derived of the J-integral for a delamination located arbitrary along the beam height. The J-integral solution derived is verified by analyzing the strain energy release rate with considering the non-linear material behavior. The effects of material gradient, crack location along the beam height and material non-linearity on the fracture are evaluated. It is found that the J-integral value decreases with increasing the upper crack arm thickness. Concerning the influence of material gradient on the non-linear fracture, the analysis reveals that the J-integral value decreases with increasing the ratio of modulus of elasticity in the lower and upper edge of the beam. It is found also that non-linear material behavior leads to increase of the J-integral value. The present study contributes for the understanding of fracture in functionally graded beams that exhibit material non-linearity.

  • Research on interfacial crack formation in orthotropic bi-materials has experienced a notable increase in recent years, driven by growing concerns about structural integrity and reliability. The existence of a crack at the interface of bi-materials has a substantial impact on mechanical strength and can ultimately lead to fracture. The primary objective of this article is to introduce a comprehensive analytical model and establish stress relationships for investigating interfacial crack between two non-identical orthotropic materials with desired crack-fiber angles. In this paper, we present the application of the Interfacial Maximum Tangential Stress (IMTS) criterion, in combination with the Reinforcement Isotropic Solid (RIS) model, to investigate the behavior of interfacial cracks in orthotropic bi-materials under mixed-mode I/II loading conditions. We analytically characterize the stress state at the interfacial crack tip using both Stress Intensity Factors (SIFs) and the T-stress term. Orthotropic materials, due to their anisotropic nature, can exhibit complex crack tip stress fields, making it challenging to predict crack initiation behavior. The secondary objective of this study is to employ the IMTS criterion to predict the crack initiation angle and explore the notable impact of the T-stress term on fracture behavior. Furthermore, we validate the effectiveness of our approach in evaluating Fracture Limit Curves (FLCs) for interfacial cracks in orthotropic bi-materials by comparing our FLCs with relevant experimental data from existing literature.

  • The present paper deals with a theoretical study of delamination fracture in the Crack Lap Shear (CLS) functionally graded beam configuration. The basic purpose is to analyze the fracture with taking into account the material non-linearity. The mechanical behavior of CLS was described by using a non-linear stress-strain relation. It was assumed that the material is functionally graded along the beam height. The fracture was analyzed by applying the J-integral approach. The curvature and neutral axis coordinate of CLS beam were derived in order to solve analytically the J-integral. The non-linear solution of J-integral obtained was verified by analyzing the strain energy release rate with considering material non-linearity. The effects of material gradient, crack location along the beam height and material non-linearity on fracture behavior were evaluated. The J-integral non-linear solution derived is very suitable for parametric studies of longitudinal fracture in the CLS beam. The results obtained can be used to optimize the functionally graded beam structure with respect to the fracture performance. The analytical approach developed in the present paper contributes for the understanding of delamination fracture in functionally graded beams exhibiting material non-linearity.

  • Theoretical and experimental free vibration characteristics of cantilevered laminated composite beams with single or multiple transverse non-propagating open cracks are investigated. The presence of intrinsic cracks in beams modifies the flexibility and in turn free vibration characteristics of the structures, and the existence of the multiple cracks in an anisotropic composite beam affects the free vibration characteristics in a more complex fashion compared with the beam with a single crack. Also the experimental results are well coincide with the numerical results in the decrease of natural frequencies and the transformation of mode shapes because of intrinsic cracks in the composite or aluminum beams. It is revealed that non-destructive crack detection(NDT) or vibration based inspection(VBI) is possible by analyzing the free vibration responses of cracked composite beams.

The specimens were heat-treated at $810^{\circ}C$ and $930^{\circ}C$ and worked 4.5, 6.0, 8.0mm thickness in order to look over the mechanical properties and fatigue life by heat treatment and thickness from the tensile test result, the yield strength of the heat treated specimens was increased about 35% more than that of the non-heat treated specimen. The fatigue life of non-heated specimen was decreased 15% but that of heat treated specimens at $870^{\circ}C$ and $930^{\circ}C$ were decreased 16.38% and 13.16% respectably according to increasing the thickness from 4.5 to 8.0mm.
