We investigate an internal flow pattern of an evaporating droplet where the contact line non-uniformly recedes. By using tomographic Particle Image Velocimetry, we observe a three-dimensional azimuthal vortex pair that is maintained until the droplet is completely dried. The non-uniformly receding contact line motion breaks the flow symmetry. Finally, a simplified scaling model presents that the mechanical stress along the contact line is proportional to the vorticity magnitude, which is validated by the experimental results.

This investigation suggests a new non-contact type sensor that can measure flexural vibrations of a non-ferromagnetic pipe. The sensor works on the reversed Lorentz force mechanism; however, anti-symmetric bias magnetic field suggested in this work should be applied to measure bending vibration of a non-ferromagnetic pipe. The importance of the suggested magnetic field is verified by a series of experiments. The sensor is applied to the bending vibration measurement and modal testing of an aluminum pipe and shows satisfactory working performance compared to others.
Although there are many ways to measure the diameter of a cylindrical object, in this study, the diameter of a cylindrical objects were measured by the geometric optical method and interference-diffraction method which are two kinds of tipical non-contact methods. In geometric optical method, the curved laser beam is formed on the cylindrical surface by spreading the inclined laser beam using the cylindrical lens. The curve is captured by CCD camera and the diameter is calculated by geometry. And the interference and diffraction patterns of investigated cylindrical objects are analyzed in interference-diffraction method. In this study, the cylindrical objects, whose diameters are $0.05\;mm\;\~\;100.50\;mm$ were measured by the geometric optical method and interference-diffraction method. The results show that in each method, the relative errors of the measurement are within $2\%$ and $1\%$, respectively and these non-contact methods can be applied in the quick measurement of many objects.

The optical triangulation method has been used as a non-contact measuring method of three dimensional object whape. But this measuring method has narrow measuring range, non-linearity on steep slope surface and shadow effect. In this study, we discussed a new optical measurement method to overcome these kinds of demerits. The advantage of this new method is that it is possible to measure precisely the object shape having the steep slope surface without shadow effect. As exper- imental results, maximum displacement error was 200 .mu. m over the whole measuring when the incident angle on the object surface was within 60 degree.
Purpose: Methods for non-destructive estimation of product quality have been reported in various industrial fields, but the application of ultrasonic techniques for the agricultural products of potatoes, pears, apples, watermelons, kiwis and tomatoes etc. have been rarely reported since the application of a contact-type ultrasonic transducer in agricultural products is very difficult. Therefore, this study sought to determine the firmness of apples using non-contact ultrasonic techniques. Methods: For this experiment, an ultrasonic experimental tester using a non-contact ultrasonic transducer was created, and a signal processing program was used to analyze the acquired ultrasonic reflected signal. Also, a universal testing machine was used to measure firmness parameters of the apples such as bioyield strength, a firmness factor, after the ultrasonic tests had been performed. Results: Six distance correction factors were calculated to obtain consistent values of ultrasonic properties regardless of the distance between the transducer and the surface of the subject. We developed prediction models of the bioyield strength using the distance correction factors. Conclusions: The optimum prediction model of the bioyield strength of apples using a non-contact ultrasonic technique was a multiple regression model ($R^2=0.9402$).

Currently the plates used for the various structures has a tendency to being slim to the degree of the sheet metal vis-a-vis the overall measurements of the structure, and the conditions of their usage and load have been getting diverse. As the structure material has been used more and more under the various conditions, the necessity of the strength analysis is to be required. While most of these methods are simply based on the strain gaging method; that is, directly attaching most of the material to the gage, using the non-contact method is still in the early stage. One of the non-contact methods is by the use of the laser that has high-level of the accuracy for the measurement, and this laser also has excellent characteristics on which many studies for its applications are focused throughout the many fields. Therefore, this dissertation is on the measurement of the strain caused by the characteristics of the TIG welded zone which is used with 3D ESPI system that is functionally modified through the laser ESPI system.

In this work, effects of plasma on different hardness of welding steel using laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy were investigated. The ratios of ionic to atomic spectrum peaks were related to its material hardness. The major spectrum peak (Fe) and minor spectrum peak (Mn) were considered as monitoring elements. The stronger repulse plasma was generated, the harder material it was. The ratios of ionic to atomic spectrum peaks increased with respect to the material hardness as well. The correlation of minor spectrum peaks was stronger than that of major spectrum peaks. However, the major spectrum peaks indicated a similar trend, which could be used to estimate the hardness, too. Based on this result, the method could be used as a non-contact remote measurement of material properties.

Non-contact critical current measurement apparatus was developed using hall probe which measures the magnetic field distribution across the width of superconducting tape. The hall probe consists of 7 independent hall sensors which lie in a line 600 ${\mu}m$. The difference between maximum and minimum magnetic field in the magnetic filed distribution is a main parameter to determine the critical current. As preliminary research, we calculated the magnetic field intensity at the middle sensor, which is a minimum magnetic field and generated by the circular shielding current modeled by Bean model. We confirmed that there are some parameters that affect on the minimum magnetic field; the distance between superconducting layer and hall sensor, the width of superconducting tape, and the critical current distribution across the width of superconducting tape. Among these parameters, the distance between superconducting layer and hall sensor highly influences on the minimum magnetic field.

Vital signals provide essential information regarding the health status of individuals, thereby contributing to health management and medical research. Present monitoring methods, such as ECGs (Electrocardiograms) and smartwatches, demand proximity and fixed postures, which limit their applicability. To address this, Non-contact vital signal measurement methods, such as CW (Continuous-Wave) radar, have emerged as a solution. However, unwanted signal components and a stepwise processing approach lead to errors and limitations in heart rate detection. To overcome these issues, this study introduces an integrated neural network approach that combines noise removal, demodulation, and dominant-frequency detection into a unified process. The neural network employed for signal processing in this research adopts a MLP (Multi-Layer Perceptron) architecture, which analyzes the in-phase and quadrature signals collected within a specified time window, using two distinct input layers. The training of the neural network utilizes CW radar signals and reference heart rates obtained from the ECG. In the experimental evaluation, networks trained on different datasets were compared, and their performance was assessed based on loss and frequency accuracy. The proposed methodology exhibits substantial potential for achieving precise vital signals through non-contact measurements, effectively mitigating the limitations of existing methodologies.

Conventional measurement methods for non-destructive testing(NDT) in nuclear power plants other industrial plants have been performed as the methods of contact with objects to be inspect, but those methods have been taken relatively much time to be inspected. Holographic interferometry which is a non-contact optical measurement method using a coherent light can overcome these demerit, and also has an advantage that the quantitative measurement of small deformation for large areas can be accomplished at a time with high precision. In this paper the comparisons of the experimental results from holographic interferometry with those form the finite element method(FEM) and the analytical solutions of elastic equation are discussed.
