This paper deals with the non-axisymmetric dynamic response of an imperfectly bonded buried orthotropic pipeline subjected to longitudinal wave (P-wave) excitation. An infinite cylindrical shell model, including the rotary inertia and shear deformation effects, has been used for the pipeline. For some cases comparison of axisymmetric and non-axisymmetric responses have also been furnished.
This paper introduces a BEM/RANS interactive scheme to predict the contra-rotating propeller (CRP) performance. In this scheme, the forward propeller and the aft propeller are handled by two separate BEM models while the interactions between them are achieved by coupling them with a RANS solver. By using the body force field and mass source field to represent the propeller in the RANS model, the number of RANS cells and the number of required RANS iterations reduce significantly. The method provides an efficient way to predict the effective wake, the steady/unsteady propeller forces, etc. The BEM/RANS interactive scheme is first applied to a CRP in both an axisymmetric manner and a non-axisymmetric manner. Results are shown in good agreement with the experimental data in moderate to high advance ratios. It is proved that the difference between the axisymmetric scheme and the non-axisymmetric scheme mainly comes from the non-axisymmetric bodies. It is also found that the error is larger at lower advance ratios. Possible explanations are given. Finally, some additional cases are tested which justifies that the non-axisymmetric BEM/RANS scheme is able to handle a podded CRP working at given inclination angles.
In this study a new simplified three-dimensional numerical method and the associated computer program have been developed to simulate the non-axisymmetric extrusion processes. The two-dimensional rigid-plastic finite element method under the generalized plane-strain condition is combined with the slab method. To define the die geometry for a non-axisymmetric extrusion. area mapping technique was used. Streamlined die surface was used to minimize the total extrusion pressure. Extrusion of square, hexagonal and 'T' section from round billet have been simulated and experimented with a model material. The computed results were in good agreement with the experiments in cross-sectional grid distortion. Computational results will be valuable for designing tool geometries and corresponding processes.

Applicability of the RNG k-$\varepsilon$ model to the analysis of unsteady axisymmetric turbulent flow of a reciprocating engine including port/valve assembly is studied numerically. The governing equations based on non-orthogonal including port/valve assembly is studied numerically. The governing equations based on a non-orthogonal coordinate formulation with Cartesian velocity components are used and discretised by the finite volume method with non-staggered variable arrangements. The predicted results using the RNG k-$\varepsilon$ model of the unsteady axisymmetric turbulent flow within a cylinder of reciprocating model engine including port/valve assembly are compared to these from the modified k-$\varepsilon$ model and experimental data. Using the RNG k-$\varepsilon$ model seems the have some potential for the simulations of the unsteady turbulent flow within a port/valve-cylinder assembly over the modified k-$\varepsilon$model.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the influences of the jaw dimension on the bone stress. Materials and Methods: Root analogue implant of Frialit-2 Synchro model in the jaw bone of various thickness from 8mm to 13mm were modelled axisymmetrically for a series of finite element analyses. As load conditions, non-axisymmetric lateral load of 20N and an oblique load of 50N, as well as an axisymmetric vertical load of 50N were taken into consideration. Results: The cervical area of implant under the axisymmetric load and the base cortical bone under the non axisymmetric load condition were the areas of main concern where the higher level of stress were likely to be obtained. Conclusion: The results indicated that at the two concerned areas drastically different stress distribution could take place as a function of the load conditions. Under the vertical load, the lower level of stress was observed for the narrow jaw bone at the cervical cortical bone whereas stress at the base cortical bone remained virtually unchanged. Under the non axisymmetric load condition, however, the stress at the base cortical bone increased very rapidly as the jaw bone width increased without inducing any significant change in the stress level at the cervical area.
Axisymmetric modeling of the nuclear containment building has been often employed in practice to estimate structural behavior for the axisymmetric loadings, where the axisymmetric approximation is required for the actual non-axisymmetric tendon arrangements in the dome. In the preceding companion paper, some procedures are proposed for the domestic CANDU and KSNP type containments that can implement the actual 3-dimensional tendon stiffness and prestressing effect into the axisymmetric model. In this paper, the proposed schemes are verified through some numerical examples comparing the results of the actual 3-dimensional model with those of some axisymmetric models. The results of the proposed axisymmetric analyses show relatively good agreements with the actual structural behavior especially for the CANDU type. Also, it is shown that proper level of the prestressing in a hoop direction plays an important role to predict the actual prestressing effect in the axisymmetric dome modeling. Finally, correction factors are discussed that can revise some approximations introduced in the derivations.

An approximate similarity theory has been applied to predict the forming load of non-axisymmetric forging of aluminum alloys through model material tests. The approximate similarity theory is applicable when strain rate sensitivity geometrical size and die velocity of model materials are different from those of real materials. Actually the forming load of yoke which is an automobile part made of aluminum alloys(Al-6061) is predicted by using this approximate similarity theory. Firstly upset forging tests are have been carried out to determine the flow curves of three model materials and aluminum alloy(Al-6061) and a suitable model material is selected for model material test of Al-6061 And then and forging tests of aluminum yokes have been performed to verify the forming load predicted from the model material which has been selected from above upset forging tests, The forming loads of aluminum yoke forging predicted by this approximate similarity theory are in good agreement with the experimental results of Al-6061 and the results of finite element analysis using DEFORM-3D.
Prestressing tendons in a nuclear containment building dome are non-axisymmetrically arranged in most cases. However, simple axisymmetric modeling of the containment has been often employed in practice to estimate structural behavior for the axisymmetric loadings such as an internal pressure. In this case, the axisymmetric approximation is required for the actual tendon arrangements in the dome. Some procedures are proposed that can implement the actual 3-dimensional tendon stiffness and prestressing effect into the axisymmetric model. Prestressing tendons, which are arranged in 3 or 2-ways depending on a containment type, are converted into an equivalent layer to consider the stiffness contribution in meridional and hoop directions. In order to reflect the prestressing effect, equivalent load method and initial stress method are devised and the corresponding loads or stresses are derived in terms of the axisymmetric model. In a companion paper, the proposed schemes are applied into CANDU and KSNP(Korean Standard Nuclear Power Plant) type containments and are verified through some numerical examples comparing the analysis results with those of the actual 3-dimensional model.

Prestressing tendons of the nuclear containment building dome are arranged in a non-axisymmetric manner. However, simple axisymmetric modeling of the containment building is often employed to estimate the structural behavior for, e.g. the ultimate pressure, which requires the axisymmetric approximation of the actual tendon arrangements of the dome. A procedure is proposed that can devise the actual 3-dimensional tendon stiffness and prestressing effect into the axisymmetric model. A numerical example of the CANDU type is presented to verify the procedure and to estimate the amount of approximation.
