  • BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to predict the association between nutritional intake and diabetes mellitus (DM) by developing an artificial neural network (ANN) model for older adults. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Participants aged over 65 years from the 7th (2016-2018) Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were included. The diagnostic criteria of DM were set as output variables, while various nutritional intakes were set as input variables. An ANN model comprising one input layer with 16 nodes, one hidden layer with 12 nodes, and one output layer with one node was implemented in the MATLAB® programming language. A sensitivity analysis was conducted to determine the relative importance of the input variables in predicting the output. RESULTS: Our DM-predicting neural network model exhibited relatively high accuracy (81.3%) with 11 nutrient inputs, namely, thiamin, carbohydrates, potassium, energy, cholesterol, sugar, vitamin A, riboflavin, protein, vitamin C, and fat. CONCLUSIONS: In this study, the neural network sensitivity analysis method based on nutrient intake demonstrated a relatively accurate classification and prediction of DM in the older population.

  • Recently, radio frequency energy transfer (RFET) attracts more and more interests for powering sensor nodes in the wireless sensor network (WSN). In the conventional WSN, reducing energy consumption of sensor nodes is of primary importance. On the contrary, in the WSN with RFET, reducing energy consumption is not an important issue. However, in the WSN with RFET, the energy harvesting rate of each sensor node depends on its location, which causes the unbalanced available energy among sensor nodes. Hence, to improve the performance of the WSN with RFET, it is important to develop network protocols considering this property. In this paper, we study this issue with jointly considering routing, scheduling, and power control in the WSN with RFET. In addition, we study this issue with considering two different objectives: 'Max-min' with which we tries to maximize the performance of a sensor node having the minimum performance and 'Max-min fairness' with which we tries to achieve max-min fairness among sensor nodes. We show that our solutions can improve network performance significantly and we also discuss the differences between 'Max-min' and 'Max-min fairness'.

  • With the advent of the fourth industrial revolution, the interest in the internet of things (IoT) in manufacturing is growing, even at foundries. There are several types of process data that can be automatically collected at a foundry, but considerable amounts of process data are still managed based on handwriting for reasons such as the limited functions of outdated production facilities and process design based on operator know-how. In particular, despite recognizing the importance of converting process data into big data, many companies have difficulty adopting these steps willingly due to the burden of system construction costs. In this study, the field applicability of IoT-based devices was examined by manufacturing devices and applying them directly to the site of a centrifugal foundry. For the centrifugal casting process, the temperature and humidity of the working site, the molten metal temperature, and mold rotation speed were selected as process parameters to be collected. The sensors were selected in consideration of the detailed product specifications and cost required for each process parameter, and the circuit was configured using a NodeMCU board capable of wireless communication for IoT-based devices. After designing the circuit, PCB boards were prepared for each parameter, and each device was installed on site considering the working environment. After the on-site installation process, it was confirmed that the level of satisfaction with the safety of the workers and the efficiency of process management increased. Also, it is expected that it will be possible to link process data and quality data in the future, if process parameters are continuously collected. The IoT-based device designed in this study has adequate reliability at a low cast, meaning that the application of this technique can be considered as a cornerstone of data collecting at foundries.

  • Because of its importance in tumor invasion and metastasis, the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) has become a research focus in the field of cancer. Recently, evidence has been presented that FoxO4 might be involved in EMT. Our study aimed to detect the expression of FoxO4, E-cadherin and vimentin in non-small cell lung cancers (NSCLCs). We also investigated clinical features and their correlations with the markers. In our study, FoxO4, E-cadherin and vimentin were assessed by immunohistochemistry in a tissue microarray (TMA) containing 150 cases of NSCLC. In addition, the expression level of FoxO4 protein was determined by Western blotting. The percentages of FoxO4, E-cadherin and vimentin positive expression in NSCLCs were 42.7%, 38.7% and 55.3%, respectively. Immunoreactivity of FoxO4 was low in NSCLC when compared with paired normal lung tissues. There were significant correlations between FoxO4 and TNM stage (P<0.001), histological differentiation (P=0.004) and lymph node metastasis (P<0.001), but no significant links with age (P=0.323), gender (P=0.410), tumor size (P=0.084), smoking status (P=0.721) and histological type (P=0.281). Our study showed that low expression of FoxO4 correlated with decreased expression of E-cadherin and elevated expression of vimentin. Cox regression analysis indicated FoxO4 to be an independent prognostic factor in NSCLC (P=0.046). These data suggested that FoxO4 might inhibit the process of EMT in NSCLC, and might therefore be a target for therapy.

  • In a wireless sensor network environment, it is required to ensure anonymity by keeping sensor nodes' identifiers not being revealed and to support real-time authentication, lightweight authentication and synchronization. In particular, there exist possibilities of location information leakage by others, privacy interference and security vulnerability when it comes to wireless telecommunications. Anonymity has been an importance issue in wired and wireless network environment, so that it has been studied in wide range. The sensor nodes are interconnected among them based on wireless network. In terms of the sensor node, the researchers have been emphasizing on its calculating performance limit, storage device limit, and smaller power source. To improve of biometric-based D. He scheme, this study proposes a real-time authentication protocol using Unique Random Sequence Code(URSC) and variable identifier for enhancing network performance and retaining anonymity provision.

  • People established a network much more using smart equipments by means of the development of the mobile industry. They can get useful information easily, make new personal connections and communities, and form various personal connections using the communities. The importance of contact, timing, and utility of time plays an important role in human relations. Many programs related to personal relations are already saturated. In other words, they are very significant and difficult to use. Many programs that didn't be concerned ahead of time about how to deal with a lot of the amount of information effectively and take it out in order to use it could bring about negative results. Human being already makes use of physical-empirical language in all of the conscious and unconscious areas. This study begins at the supposition that how to make it easy to apply humane gestures and languages to applications with portable equipment close to human beings.

  • With the proliferation of multimedia group applications, the construction of multicast trees satisfying QoS requirements is becoming a problem of prime importance. In this paper, we study the delay- and delay variation-bounded multicast tree (DVBMT) problem which is NP-complete. The problem is to construct a spanning tree for destination node, which has the minimized multicast delay variation, and the delay on the path from the source to each destination is bounded. A solution to this problem is required to provide decent real-time communication services such as on-line games, shopping, and teleconferencing. Performance comparison shows that the proposed scheme outperforms DDVCA which is known to be effective so far in any network topology. The enhancement is up to about $3.6{\%}{\~}11.1{\%}$ in terms of normalized surcharge for DUVCA. The time complexity of our algorithm is $O(mn^2)$.

  • The chemokine receptor 4 (CXCR4) has been widely used in diagnosis and prognosis of colorectal cancer (CRC). However, there is no current consensus on the impact of CXCR4 on CRC patients. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the prognostic and clinicopathological importance of CXCR4 in CRC patients. Databases, such as PubMed, Cochrane library, CBM and EMBASE updated to 2014 were searched to include eligible articles. We analysed correlations between CXCR4 expression and clinicopathological features and overall survival (OS). A total of 1, 055 CRC patients from twelve studies were included in the study. The pooled odds ratios (ORs) which indicated CXCR4 expression was likely to be associated with TNM stage (OR=0.43, CI=0.34-0.55, P<0.00001), lymph node status (OR=2.23, CI=1.23-4.05, P=0.008) and vascular invasion (OR=2.21, CI=1.11-4.39, P=0.02). Poor overall survival of CRC cancer was found to be significantly related to CXCR4 overexpression (hazard ratio (HR) 1.36 CI=1.17-1.59, P<0.0001), whereas combined ORs revealed that CXCR4 expression had no correlation with gender or differentiation. Based on the published studies, CXCR4 overexpression in patients w ith CRC indicates poor survival outcome and clinicopathological factors.

  • Objective: To explore the influence of serum vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) level on therapeutic outcome and diagnosis/prognostic value in patients with cervical cancer. Materials and Methods: A total of 37 patients diagnosed with cervical cancer by biopsy were selected and treated with concurrent chemoradiotherapy. Double-antibody sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was adopted before treatment to assess VEGF levels, and its relationships with clinicopathological features and short-term therapeutic effects were analyzed. Results: The median VEGF level in 37 patients before treatment was 647.15 (393.35~1125.16) pg/mL. Serum VEGF levels in patients aged <50 years, in International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) stage IIIa~IVa, with lymph node metastasis and tumor size >4 cm were significantly increased (P<0.05). The complete remission (CR) rate was 48.7% (18/37), partial remission (PR) rate was 35.1% (13/37), stable disease (SD) rate was 13.5% (5/37) and progressive disease (PD) rate was 2.70% (1/37), so the objective remission rate (ORR) after treatment was 83.8% (31/37). Logistic regression analysis showed that tumor size and serum VEGF level before treatment were independent risk factors affecting the therapeutic outcome, and the higher the level of serum VEGF, the worse the prognosis when tumor size>4 cm. Some 56.8% of patients manifested with myelosuppression, 37.8% with leucopenia, 24.3% with thrombocytopenia, 5.41% with diarrhea, 46.0% with nausea and vomiting, 21.6% with hair loss and 8.11% with hepatic and renal injury during the treatment. Conclusions: Serum VEGF level may reflect the degree of malignancy of cervical cancer and predict therapeutic effect, which is of great importance to cancer diagnosis and prognosis.

  • Over-expression of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) has been identified as a common feature associated with clinical outcome in many types of cancer, including squamous cell carcinoma of the oesophagus (SCCO). However, the clinical importance of EGFR over-expression in SCCO remains unsettled as conflicting results exist. Therefore we carried out the present meta-analysis of published studies for clarification. A total of 13 studies including 1, 150 patients were enrolled. EGFR over-expression was positive in 722 of these cases. With EGFR over-expression, patients had higher depth of invasion, vascular invasion, and poor prognosis. However, expression had no relation with degree of differentiation, histological grade, lymph node metastasis, clinical stage or lymphatic invasion. EGFR over-expression is probably a valuable predictor for the T stage, vascular invasion and OS, and it could be used as a poor prognosis indicator for the esophageal SCC patients. Targeting therapy to EFGR should be considered to the combined treatment in SCCO.
