Conventional methods of automatic recognition of Korean characters consist of the thinning processing, the segmentation of connected fundamental phonemes and the recognition of each fundamental character. These methods, however require the thinning processing which is complex and time consuming. Also several noise components make worse effects on the recognition of characters than in the case of no thinning. This paper describes the extraction method of the feature components of Korean fundamental characters of the Gothic Korean letter without the thinning. We regard line-components of the contour which describes the character's external boundary as the feature-components. The line-component includes the directional code, the length and the start point in the image. Each fundamental character is represented by the string of directional codes. Therefore the recognition process is only the string pattern matching. We use the Gothic-hangul in the experiment. The ecognition rate is 92%.
This study was carried out to understand the characteristic relations fruit changes caused by adjusting the amount of the fruit load in 'Niitaka' and 'Whangkeumbae'. The average fruit weight of 'Niitaka' was 672.0 g and the amount of fruit in the range of 601-750 g was the highest, accounting for 33.8% of the production and as for 'Whangkeumbae', the average fruit weight was 477.5 g and fruit in the range of 401-600 g accounted for 72.5% of total production. The weight of the 'Niitaka' was evenly distributed in each range from below 300 g to over 1 kg and the percent of the regular shaped fruit in 'Whangkeumbae' was high as the distribution range of the fruit weight was narrow. The brix degree and the soluble solid content (SSC)/acidity ratio of 'Niitaka' had a significantly positive correlation with the fruit weight, the length, and the diameter of the fruit. The brix degree also had a positive correlation with weight and diameter of the fruit for 'Whangkeumbae'. As for the difference in fruit quality according to fruit weight for each variety, the brix degree was low in 'Niitaka' that were below 451 g and the fruit firmness was low in fruits weighing under 400 g. There was no difference according to fruit weight in 'Whangkeumbae'. The fruit size was impacted by the fleshy part and the ratio of fleshy part was higher as the fruit size became larger. The weight of the fruit, brix degree, and the SSC/acidity ratio were low while the firmness was high in light thinning treatment for 'Niitaka' and in the case of 'Whangkeumbae', the fruit weight and brix degree were both low in light thinning treatment. The brix degree was higher in bigger sized fruit in all thinning intensity for 'Niitaka', the case in light thinning treatment especially where the quality was poor due to low brix degree in fruits that weighed less than 450 g, on the other hand, there was no difference in the quality due to the fruit weight among the thinning intensity for 'Whangkeumbae'. Therefore, it is possible to produce smaller sized fruits in 'Niitaka' by controlling the thinning intensity, as it is inevitable to result in lower quality fruits, however, it is projected that we can produce small to mid-sized fruits in 'Whangkeumbae' by controlling the thinning intensity without causing the decline in fruit quality.
This study was carried out to investigate the change on soil $CO_2$ efflux rates, soil temperature, soil water content and soil pH by thinning intensity treatments (heavy thinning, light thinning, control) of a black pine (Pinus thunbergii Parl.) stand disturbed by pine wilt disease in Wola National Experimental Forests in Jinju, Gyeongnam province. Monthly variations of soil $CO_2$ efflux rates were not significantly different between the thinning and the control treatments (P>0.05). The annual mean soil $CO_2$ efflux rates were $0.58g\;CO_2m^{-2}h^{-1}$ for the light thinning, $0.49g\;CO_2m^{-2}h^{-1}$ for the heavy thinning and $0.45g\;CO_2m^{-2}h^{-1}$ for the control treatments, respectively. There was a significant exponential relation between soil $CO_2$ efflux rates and soil temperature, but no correlation between soil water content or soil pH and soil $CO_2$ efflux rates. The values of $Q_{10}$ were 3.40 for the light thinning, 3.20 for the heavy thinning and 3.06 for the control treatments, respectively. The results indicate that soil $CO_2$ efflux rates in a black pine stand disturbed by pine wilt disease could be affected by thinning treatments.

Thinning of parietal bone bilaterally is extremely rare but well known phenomenon. Approximate prevalence is 0.4-0.5% according to radiological scans, case reports and anthropologic researches. Even though biparietal osteodystrophy occurs mostly in over 60-year-old women, it shows no special association with race or geographical area tendency. Current definition was changed by understanding that is a pathological situation, not an anatomical variety or result of growing old in time. Biparietal osteodystrophy may have an unusual presentation and treatment still remains unclear. We aim to present a patient with biparietal osteodystrophy associated with minor head trauma that caused parietal fracture and epidural hematoma underneath.
The purpose of this paper is to analyze piping failure trend of safety pipings In domestic nuclear power plants. First, database for the piping failure was constructed with 105 data fields. The database includes plant population data, event data, and service history data. 7 kinds of piping failures in domestic NPPs were investigated. Among the 7 cases, detailed root causes were investigated for 3 cases. The first one is pipe wall thinning in main feedwater pipings of Westinghouse 3 loop type plants. The root cause of the wall thinning was flow accelerated corrosion near welding area. The next one is leak event in chemical and volume control system(CVCS) due to vibration. Some cracks occurred in socket welding area. The events showed that the integrity or socket weld is very vulnerable to vibration. The last one is also a leak event in primary sampling line in Korean standard reactor due to thermal fatigue. Although the structural integrity was not maintained by the events, there was no effect on nuclear safety in the above 3 piping failure eases.
Unforeseen failures of boilers in power plants may affect the continuation of electricity generation. Main failures in boilers are influenced by the tube material, tube position, boiler service temperature and pressure, and chemical composition of the feed water and coal. This investigation was intended to find answers on the causes and mechanism of failure of the fire-side boiler water-wall tubes, due to perforation and corrosion. The tube conformed to the material requirements in terms of its chemical composition and hardness. Microscopic examination showed ferrite and pearlite indicating no changes in its microstructure due to the temperature variation. SEM test showed a single layer and homogenous film density particularly on the area far from perforation. However, layers of corrosion product were formed on the nearby perforation area. EDX showed that there were Na, Ca, S, and O elements on the failed surface. XRD indicated the presence of Fe2O3 oxide. The failure mechanism was identified as a result of significant localized wall thinning of the boiler water wall-tube due to oxidation.
Viscoelastic fluid is used in various industrial sites because its cost reduction and environmental benefits by preventing formation of fine droplets that scattered around. However, viscoelastic fluids, unlike newtonian fluids, contain a shear thinning characteristic that decrease in viscosity as shear rate increases and elastic characteristic, making it difficult to predict spray breakup process. In this study we made three test fluids. Boger fluid with viscoelastic characteristics, and two newtonian fluids, were prepared to exclude shear thinning characteristics and study the effects of elastic characteristic only. Flow visualization, spray angle, and SMD were measured for three test fluids using laboratory scale impinging jet test apparatus. As a result, it was confirmed that Boger fluid, unlike the newtonian fluid, was not formed fine droplets that scattered around and the breakup process appeared differently. In addition, SMD was found to be large in Boger fluid, and the SMD according to pressure was confirmed that there is no significant difference.
As a fundamental study of developing sawdust board from thinning softwood logs from three species (Pinus densiflora S. et Z., Larix leptolepis G. and Pinus koraiensis S. et Z.), this study examined the effect of board density and resin content on physical and mechanical properties of sawdust board. As the board density increase, thickness swelling, bending strength, and Brinell hardness increased while water absorption decreased. With increasing the resin content, the bending strength and hardness increased while water absorption and thickness swelling decreased. The board made of L. leptolepis was slightly low in its water absorption, and the one made of P. koraiensis was a little high in its bending strength, while there was no definite difference between each kind of trees in their hardness values.
The experiment was carried out to establish a reasonable harvesting method of mulberry shoots with branches by thin out in spring, comparing with thin-out harvest, and the results are as follows. 1. In spring, the thin-out harvest showed no remarkable effect in the results of seven days interval cutting down, except for the treatment of thinning-out thinner branches. 2. There was no significance between the control and the thinning-out thinner branches, but a tendency to increase a little harvest. Therefore, few shoots of thin branches should be cut down for the 4th instarlarvae and the rest of branches for the 5th instarlarvae. 3. The thin-out of the thicker branches showed the worst result of others, because it can hardly expect for 7 days after cutting down the thicker branches.
In order to examine the relationship of fruit abscission and ethylene evolution in 'Jojuro' and 'Imamuraaki' pear trees, the thinning chemicals, ${\beta}$-naphthalene acetic acid (NAA), O, O-dimethyl-O-(3-methyl-4 nitrophenyl) posphorothioate (MEP), 1-naphthyl N-methyl carbamate (carbaryl), and 2-chloroethyl phosphonic acid (ethephon) were applied. Concurrently the effect of calcium acetate on the control of fruit abscission were examined when calcium acetate was added to ethephon and carbaryl. 1. All the applied chemicals (MEP, NAA, carbaryl and ethephon) was effective to abscise fruits in 'Jojuro', and MEP and carbaryl in 'Imamuraaki's. 2. The application of ethephon increased the ethylene evolution but other chemicals did not increase it. 3. There were no significant differences in total sugar contents of fruits by MEP, NAA, carbaryl and ethephon treatments. 4. When the calcium acetate was added to the ethephon and carbaryl, the thinning effects were offsetted. 5. The rate of defoliation due to ethephon treatment was controlled by addition of calcium acetate at 0.1~0.25 M. It was clarified that fruit abscission induced by thinning chemicals except ethephon was not directly related to ethylene production and that degree of fruit thinning can be regulated by addition of calcium acetate to thinning chemicals.
