Seasenal absorption of inorganic nutrients and dry matter Production were studied with four-year-old ginseng plant. The residuary amounts of the nutrients supplied to ginseng Plantation were decreased with lime elapsed. The decreasing rate was greater in chemical plots than in Yacto Plots. The amounts of manure applied in this current year and growth in dry matter production of ginseng showed no signficant difference. The amounts of mineral nutrients per unit dry matter were proportional to the amounts of supplied with chemical fertilizer in the early period of growing season but with Yacto in the late season of growing. Seasonal changes of nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium contents per unit dry weight in each organ were high in the middle of May. They decreased sharply in the middle of June and then slowly decreased in both leaves and stems but gradually increased in roots. The absorption ratio of nitrogen to Phosphorus (N/P) was high, and that of nitrogen to Potassium (N/K) was few. The amounts of nitrogen, phosphorus and Potassium in leaves became lower with increasing the relative light intensity, but in stems, the concentrations were different with the kind of mineral nutrients. The requisite amounts of mineral nutrient of ginseng plant were 8.3∼9.9 kg of nitrogen, 1.2∼1.5 kg of phosphorus, 6.4∼7.9 kg of potassium Per 10 a for five years.

BACKGROUND: Mixed cropping of legume and grass was effective system in view point of providing organic matter and nitrogen or reducing the nitrogen starvation of following crop. The relation of the change of N and P constituents depending on the cropping types and those effects on the growth and nutrient uptake of the following crop were observed. METHODS AND RESULTS: Three cropping types, hairy vetch mono cropping, barley mono cropping, and mixed cropping of hairy vetch and barley were applied. Soil properties, growth characteristics, and nitrogen production of green manure crops were observed. In additions, the effect of cropping types on the growth pattern of corn as the following crop was observed. In the mixed cropping system, creeping type hairy vetch climbed to the erect type barely for light utilization resulting in improvement of light interception rate and higher LAI (Leaf Area Index) than in mono cropping. Mixed cropping showed higher biomass production and soil nitrogen availability among the cropping types, indicating relatively much more nutrient supply and higher yield production of following crop. CONCLUSION: Mixed cropping showed relatively higher LAI (dry matter) mainly because of intense competition for light utilization usually after flowering stage. Mixed cropping also showed relatively higher yield of corn, the following crop rather than other types, mainly due to the more biomass production potential and higher N and P production ability. Therefore, mixed cropping was adaptable method to reduce or replace chemical fertilizer application for environmentally-friendly agriculture.
This experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of coated urea complex fertilizer(CUC) on the growth and quality of rice in high-ridged dry seeding and infant -seedling machine transplanting on clay loam and sandy loam in Milyang, Korea, 1993. The CUC level applicated was 100 %, 80 %, 60% and 40% to standard application amount of fertilizer. Results obtained were as follows : 1. The nitrogen releasing rate in dry seeding was 83% for sandy loam, 81% in clay loam for 3.5 months after initial releasing, and in infant-seedling was 89% in both soil types for 4 months. 2. The degree of rice leaf color was the highest at the heading stage, and was high with increasing CUC application level regardless of cultural methods, especially was higher at harvesting stage in the 100% level of CUC to standard application amount of fertilizer than conventional fertilizer. 3. The perfect rice grain ratio was higher in infant-seedling than in dry seeding, but lowered with increasing CUC application level regardless of cultural methods. The green kerneled rice ratio among imperfect rice grain was high in dry seeding, and the notched belly rice kernel ratio was high in infant-than infant-seedling of the both soil types, and increased with increasing CUC application level. 4. Hon-value in rice grain was higher at the treatment of CUC application than conventional fertilizer in dry seeding. However, it was contrary result in infant seedling, and was low tendency with decreasing CUC application. On the other hand, the protein in rice grain was also same tendency of Hon-value. Cel-consistency related to eating quality was longer with increasing CUC application level regardless of cultural methods. However, there was no clear tendency at clay loam. 5. No significant difference between rice yield and CUC application in the range of 60% to 100% at both soil types in dry seeding was observed. These results appeared in clay loam under infant seedling except sandy loam. Accordingly, it was thought that 60% level of CUC to standard application amount of fertilizer could be applicated for growth and quality of rice.
Plug seedlings of vinca (Catharanthus roseus L. 'Pacifica Punch') and salvia (Salvia splendens F. Sellow ex Roem & Schult 'Maestro') were transplanted into square plastic pots (145 mL volume) filled with a soilless growing medium. To determine the effect of application rate on the growing medium EC and growth of plants, 0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0 and 4.0 g per pot of a controlled release fertilizer (14-14-14 Osmocote, 14N-6.2P-11.6K) were mixed with the growing medium. Plants were subirrigated daily with tap water. In both vinca and salvia, growing medium EC increased as application rate was elevated. Growing medium EC was relatively constant over a whole crop period when the application rate was less than 1.5 g per pot, while it decreased throughout the experiment at higher application rates such as 2.0 to 4.0g per pot in both species. The greatest leaf area, plant height, and shoot dry weight of vinca were obtained when plants were fertilized with 2.0 to 4.0 g per pot of the fertilizer, resulting in a growing medium EC of $1.0{\sim}1.7dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ throughout the experiment. Leaf area, shoot dry weight, and chlorophyll content of salvia increased with elevated application rates. Leaf area, shoot dry weight, and chlorophyll content of salvia were the greatest when plants were fertilized with 4.0 g per pot, resulting in growing medium EC of $1.0{\sim}4.0dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ throughout the experiment. Plant height of salvia was the greatest when plants were fertilized with 2.0 to 4.0g per pot. Concentrations of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), magnesium (Mg), and sulfur (S) in the shoots of vinca increased, while concentration of calcium (Ca) decreased with elevated application rates. Concentrations of boron (B) and manganese (Mn) in the shoots of vinca increased as the application rate decreased.
Understanding on nutrient solute movement during the course of freezing and thawing was attempted through laboratory and field obsevations. Small sectioned tubes with 5cm inner diameter, 0.2cm thick and 1cm long were connected to 30cm long soil columns for laboratory study. The columns were filled with soil, and treated with 20mmol/kg $KNO_3$ for upper 5cm. The upper end was set in the freezing section, and the lower end was set in the refrigerating section of a refrigerator. Temperature was controlled at $-7({\pm}1)^{\circ}C$ and $1.5({\pm}1)^{\circ}C$, respectively. After top 5cm soil was frozen, the columns were sectioned, and analyzed for $NO_3^-$, $NH_4^+$ and $K^+$. For field study, the 20cm inner diameter and lm long soil columns were installed in Chuncheon and Daegwanryung, where the altitude was 74m and 840m, respectively. The soils used were silt loam and clay loam. The top 20cm soils were treated with 50mmol/kg as $KNO_3$. The soil columns were taken during winter freezing and after thawing. By laboratiry study, upward movement of $NO_3^-$ and $K^+$ during the course of freezing was confirmed. The upward movement of $K^+$ was, however, one fifth to one tenth of $NO_3^-$. The upward movement of inorganic nitrogen as well as laboratory during the course of freezing, but large amount of nitrogen was lost from the profile after thawing in early spring. Leached nitrogen from the upper 20cm to lower part was 17 to 24 percents. The maximum depth of leaching during the experiment was 50cm for all soils. The net loss of inorganic nitrogen from the whole profile ranged 8.7 to 39.5 percents. The net loss was greater in Daegwanryung where temperature was lower and snowfall was larger than Chuncheon, and the loss was greater from the silt loam soil than clay loam soil of which percolation rate was small. The results implied that reasons for nitrogen loss during the winter might include surface washing by snow melt as well as leaching and denitrification.
In order to investigate the fate of nitrogen in the paddy soil, Suchang, Hwasoon and Susan soil which have different properties, were treated with several nitrogen fertilizers such as ammonium chloride, ammonium sulfate, urea and SCU (sulfur-coated urea), and incubated under water-logged condition in $30^{\circ}C$ incubator. $NH_4-N$, $NO_3-N$, $Fe^{++}$ and pH in soil and stagnant water, were determined at 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 days after incubation. The obtained results were summarized as follows: 1. The effect of rising temperature was increased in order of Hwasoon>Suchang>Susan and the effect of air drying soil was risen in order of Susan>Hwasoon>Suchang, while the rate of ammonication was in order of Susan>Suchang>Hwasoon. 2. The changes of $NH_4-N$ in stagnant water was dependent upon the nitrogen concentration of $NH_4Cl$ and $(NH_4)SO_4$ plat was high and decreased after 30 days incubation, but increased after 40 days and then decreased again. In contrast with the above, $NH_4-N$ concentration of urea and SCU plot was low but the change showed slightly through the incubation period. 3. Accumulation of $NH_4-N$ in the oxidative layer of the $NH_4Cl$ and $(NH_4)_2SO_4$ plot was higher than that of urea and SCU plot and $NH_4-N$ content was decreased with the incubation period. The change of $NH_4-N$ in the reductive layer showed the same pattern. 4. The changes of $NO_3-N$ in the stagnant water were different according to soil properties and nitrogen fertilizer. $NO_3-N$ concentration in stagnant water of urea and SCU plot was higher than in the $NH_4-Cl$$(NH_4)_2SO_4$ plot and nearly disappeared after 30 to 40 days incubation. 5. The $NO_3-N$ concentration in the oxidative layer of soil was higher than reductive layer. The pattern of change was different in accordance with soil properties and nitrogen fertilizers. In general, nitrification in urea and SCU plot was more increased than $(NH_4)_2SO_4$ plot. In reductive layer, the concentration of $NO_3-N$ was very low until 30 days incubation and thereafter increased slightly. 6. Upon the concentration of $NH_4-N$ and $NO_3-N$ in stagnant water and soil, it was assumed that denitification of urea and SCU plot was higher than $NH_4Cl$ and $(NH_4)_2SO_4$ plot and denitrified nitrogen in incubation period was above 50%.
Two fertilizer levels were treated to the nine barley varieties developed at different years to investigate the morphological and physiological traits related to grain yields. Recently developed varieties were higher in amounts of chlorophyll and nitrogen content of leaf, root activity, root weight and specipic leaf weight as compared with older varieties. Dry matter production was closely related to NAR rather than LAI in new varieties, but indicating the reverse results in older varieties. They showed higher NAR and light transmission rate in new varieties but higher LAI in older varieties. Leaves in new varieties were distributed uniformly according to its position on clum. However, leaves in older varieties arranged irregularly showing more distribution at the upper and middle positions on culm. The factors which showed high correlations with grain yield were chlorophyll content, root activity, NAR, and nitrogen content of leaf of which stepwise multiple regression with grain yield indicated that 90% of total variance was occupied by chlorophyll content, root activity and dry matter.
Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of biogas slurry application on biomass production and the silage quality of corn. Methods: A field experiment was conducted in which corn was grown using different biogas slurry application rates. The effect of 25% to 500% biogas slurry nitrogen replacement (T1 to T14) on the yield and quality indices of corn were studied by field plot experiments. Results: The results revealed that biogas slurry application improved the stem diameter and relative feed value of corn silage in treatments T13 and T11. Moreover, the fermentation quality of corn silage was improved due to an increase in lactic acid content; in comparison with the chemical synthetic fertilizer (CF) group. The crude protein contents of corn silage had no obvious change with increasing biogas slurry application. However, the forage quality index of acid detergent fiber was decreased (p<0.05) in the T11 group compared with the CF group. In addition, higher (p<0.05) 30 h in vitro dry matter digestibility and 30 h in vitro neutral detergent fiber digestibility were observed in the T11 and T13 groups than in the CF group. Conclusion: Based on these results, it was concluded that the optimum biogas slurry application rate for corn was approximately 350% to 450% biogas slurry nitrogen replacement under the present experimental conditions.

The contents of total nitrogen(T-N), phosphate($T-P_2O_5$), and potash($T-K_2O$) are important factors to determine the application rate of the livestock compost to prevent nutrients accumulation and maintain their appropriate levels in arable lands. The concentrations of nutrient, organic matter, salt, water content, heavy metal in livestock compost in circulation were investigated with 659 samples from 2016 to 2017. In order to investigate the fluctuation nutrient contents of livestock composts with the same product name, 19 samples were collected and analyzed T-N, and $T-P_2O_5$, and $T-K_2O$ concentration during two years. The mean levels of T-N, $T-P_2O_5$, and $T-K_2O$ in livestock composts of from 2016 to 2017 were 1.73%, 1.88%, and 1.66%, respectively. The average contents of organic matter, water, and salt were 38.9%, 40.9%, and 1.2%, respectively. There were found that the maximum concentrations of Cr, Ni, Cu, and Zn in some livestock composts were exceeded the criteria of the official standard of commercial fertilizer. The maximum variation coefficient of T-N, $T-P_2O_5$ and $T-K_2O$ content of livestock composts was found to be 24%, 27%, and 50% on average, respectively. In order to manage the nutrients in agricultural soils, it will be reasonable that the error range of T-N and $T-P_2O_5$ content in livestock composts should be recommended to be 27% in mean as variation coefficient in case of displaying the nutrient element in liverstock compost.
An experiment was conducted to evaluate the possibility of using basic oxygen furnace (BOF) slag as soil conditioner in soybean upland field. In 1997, soybean (Glycine max L. cv. Eunha) crop was cultivated under different application rates of BOF slag at an experimental field of Chonnam Rural Development Administration in Nampyung, Najoo city. Five treatments, four application rates of BOF slag (0, 4, 8, $12Mg\;ha^{-1}$) and one application rate of lime ($2Mg\;ha^{-1}$) were tried with three replications. Plant height and shoot dry weight per plant were measured five times during the growth period. Chemical contents of soybean plant tissues and soil were also measured at the same sampling date. Yield were estimated by harvesting $6.6m^2$ per experimental unit and yield components were measured by sampling 10 plants per experimental unit at the harvest date. In upland soil, application of BOF slag rarely affected contents of total nitrogen, organic matter, available phosphate and potassium in soil. Soil pH, and contents of Ca and Fe in soil became higher as BOF slag rate increased. Enhancement of soil pH by application of BOF slag appeared to be closely related with increase in soil Ca content. Application rate of $2Mg\;ha^{-1}$ of lime showed almost the same effect in increase of soil Ca content as application rate of $4{\sim}8Mg\;ha^{-1}$ of BOF slag. Slag treatment hardly affected the contents of total nitrogen, $P_2O_5$, CaO, $K_2O$ and MgO in the shoot of soybean plants. Soybean plants under treatments of BOF salg showed better growth from the earlier growth stage compared with those of control treatment, and at the later growth stage, their growth was even superior to that of lime treatment. BOF slag rate of $8Mg\;ha^{-1}$ showed the highest soybean yield with $1,232kg\;ha^{-1}$. which was $330kg\;ha^{-1}$ or 37% higher than the yield of control with $902kg\;ha^{-1}$, As a result, BOF slag appeared to be useful material as a soil conditioner as well as nurient source for Ca and Fe in upland soybean fields, and its optimal rate for higher yield seemed to be around $8Mg\;ha^{-1}$.
