  • Ammonia Adsorbed Fly Ash (AAFA) samples produced from coal fired plants equipped with SNCR (Selective Non-Catalytic Reduction) of nitrogen oxides with urea have been chemically analyzed, and their physical and dissolution properties have been investigated. XRD results for the ammonia component in AAFA ascertained that ABS (ammonium bisulfate) and AS (ammonium sulfate) were deposited on fly ash as $SO_3$ reacted with unreacted ammonia at SNCR. SEM and EDS images showed that fine ashes on large fly ash surface of sphere type were agglomerated, due to adhesive role of ammonium salts attached fly ashes. Dissolution test results of ammonium salts absorbed on AAFA in distilled water or sea water showed that the proportion of un-ionized $NH_3$ to $NH_4{^+}$ were primarily a function of pH and temperature. Increasing pH and temperature causes an increase in the fraction of un-ionized $NH_3$. At pHs of 9.6 and 10.7, un-ionized $NH_3$ and $NH_4{^+}$ ions are present in equal amounts at distilled water and sea water, respectively.

  • The current-voltage characteristics at annealed Be-Cu alloy(1.8-2 wt% Be, 0.2 wt% Co+Ni) interfaces have been studied by means of the cyclic voltammetric method. The specimens were annealed in nitrogen gas($N_{2}$) furnace at 36$0^{\circ}C$ for 1.5 hours. After annealing, the vickers hardness(HV) was increased from 210 to 385. The used solutions were distilled water(H$_{2}$O), 10$^{-3}M\;CsNO_{2},10^{-2}M\;KCl,10^{-2}M\;KOH,10^{-4}M\;H_{2}SO_{4}$ aqueous electrolytes, and ethylalcohol ($C_{2}H_{5}OH$), etc. The cyclic voltammograms showed significant current-voltage characteristics between the annealed and unannealed specimens at the same conditions. The age hardening and the related surface potential barrer and dissolution effects have been observed during the whole experimental process. The dissolution process of annealed Be-Cu alloys was effectively retarded by the age hardening phenomenon. The age hardening effect also raised the surface potential barrier of Be-Cu alloys. The interfacial phenomena of Be-Cu alloys seem to be one of good models for understanding the activation process.

  • The effect of structured water by dissolution of xenon was examined from the view point of the suppression of both browning and respiratory metabolism of broccoli. The structured water is formed duet to hydrophobic interaction when xenon gas dissolves into water. NMR measurements were carried out to determine proton spin-spin relaxation time, T2, for water. There was a difference in proton T2 between distilled water and structured water. This can be interpreted as the change of water structure. Fro the broccoli cut in half stored for 16 days at 279K, the section color did not change appreciably for the sample whose water was structured by dissolution of xenon whose initial partial pressure was 0.39MPa. In contrast to this, the browning of section surface was observed for the sample stored under the condition of nitrogen gas at the same partial pressure as xenon and for the sample stored under atmospheric condition . These results led to the conclusion that the suppression of b owning by oxidation was due to structured water but not to applied pressure. Adding to this, the water structured by xenon has resulted in suppression of respiratory metabolism of broccoli.

  • The purpose of this study was to find out the effects of slow-released nitrogen fertilizer (SRF) on the growth and yield of Chinese cabbage. The SRF used in this study was prepared by embedding urea into a waste paper slum. The underwater dissolution rate of SRF was very rapid during the first 12 hours and 60.4% of the embedded nitrogen was released after 72 hours. The SRF and urea was applied as nitrogen source and growth. yield, yield components, nitrogen uptake of Chinese cabbage were investigated a pot experiment. Maximum leaf length of Chinese cabbage was not different between SRF and urea treatments. Length and wish of head, number of leaf per head and fresh weight of Chinese cabbage were higher in SRF treatment than those in urea treatment, but the differences were not statistically significant. Comparing to the urea treatment, nitrogen content and nitrogen uptake efficiency of Chinese cabbage were significantly higher in SRF treatment. After the experiment, total soil nitrogen contents were not different between the SRF and urea treatments.

  • Squid ink was added to the salt fermented squid by 2% or 4% of concentration and ripened at $10^{\circ}C$ for 8 weeks and at $20^{\circ}C$ for 32days. The effects of the squid ink on the amino nitrogen and muscle protein of salt fermented squid were investigated. The results are as follows; As the salt concentration was decreased and the fermentation temperature raised, amino nitrogen in the salt fermented squid without addition of the squid ink was significantly increased to the latter stage of the ripening and hence fermentations were enhanced. From the change of the protein in the squid muscle in the experiments, dissolution of the myosin heavy chain took place conspicuously in the early stage of the ripening while actin was rarely changed which resulted in the strong resistance to protease. The amino nitrogen content in the salt fermented squid addition of the squid ink has increased to the latter part of the ripening but the range was smaller than no treatment groups. The protein in squid muscle, especially the myosin heavy chain was remarkably dissolved in the middle of the ripening whereas the squid ink added groups of high salt concentration and low temperature showed the tendency of slow proteolysis.

  • Contaminated marine sediment is a secondary pollution source in the coastal areas, which can result in increased nutrients concentrations in the overlying water. We analyzed the nutrients release characteristics into overlying water from sediments and the interaction among benthic circulation of nitrogen, phosphorus, iron, and sulfur were investigated in a preset sediment/water column. Profiles of pH, ORP, sulfur, iron, nitrogen, phosphorus pools were determined in the sediment and three different layers of overlying water. Variety types of sulfur in the sediments plays a significant role on nutrients transfer into overlying water. Dissimilatory nitrate reduction and various sulfur species interaction are predominantly embodied by the enhancing effects of sulfide on nitrogen reduction. Contaminant sediment take on high organic matter, which is decomposed by bacteria, as a result promote bacterial sulfate reduction and generate sulfide in the sediment. The sulfur and iron interactions had also influence on phosphorus cycling and released from sediment into overlying water may ensue over the dissolution of ferric iron intercede by iron-reducing bacteria. The nutrients release rate was calculated followed by release rate equation. The results showed that the sediments released large-scale quantity of ammonium nitrogen and phosphate, which are main inner source of overlying water pollution. A mechanical migration of key nutrients such as ammonia and inorganic phosphate was depicted numerically with Fick's diffusion law, which showed a fair agreement to most of the experimental data.

  • This research was conducted to investigate the changes of $NH_4-N$ in soil, nitrogen uptake by rice plant, nitrogen-use efficiency and rice yield by the application of latex coated urea(LCU) on 10-day old seedling transplanted with machine on paddy field, Jeonbuk series at the Honam area, from 1997 to 1998. Almost all nitrogen in LCU application as basal dressing in whole layer was dissolved until maximum tiller stage, the maximum dissolution time was productive tiller stage and $NH_4-N$ content of conventional plot with surface application of fertilizer were lowered at full periods. Nitrogen deficiency symptom were appeared at heading stage of 31.6% SPAD value and nitrogen concentration was 1.29% shoot. From heading stage to ripening stage, the necessity of nitrogen-fertilizer was $2.9kg\;ha^{-1}$ for the conventional split application plot and $11.9kg\;ha^{-1}$ for the whole layer application plot of LCU basal dressing. Nitrogen-use efficiency was higher at the LCU application plot than the conventional application plot and was increased for 12.7% by fertilization at panicle forming stage. The additional fertilization at panicle forming stage to basal dressing of LCU causes 13% yield increase.

  • Pickling inhibitors can be used to form an adsorbed layer on the metal surface to hinder the discharge of H^+$ and dissolution of metal ions. Nitrogen-containing inhibitors were selected as corrosion inhibitors for mild steel (MS) in pickling acid process. In this study, the addition of inhibitor, the pickling temperatures and the pickling times were the parameters to investigate the effects on the inhibition efficiency (IE) for MS by using weight loss measurement. Preliminary results show that the IE increased with the increase in pickling time from 10 minutes to 60 minutes, and the IE also increased with the increase in temperature at room temperature and $40^{\circ}C$. At the higher temperature. the IE values are higher and almost independent with the pickling time. Furthermore, the potentiodynamic polarization, open circuit corrosion potential-time and corrosion current-time studies show that nitorgen-containing inhibitor behaves predominantly as cathodic polarization. The roughness test and SEM investigation are also studied in this paper.

  • In this study, effects of solidification modes (primary $\delta$-ferrite, primary ${\gamma}$-austenite) on the pit initiation and propagation in the 304L and 316L austenitic stainless steel weld metals were investigated. The solidification mode of weld metal was controlled by the addition of nitrogen to Ar shielding gas. Through the electrochemical experiments (potentiodynamic anodic polarization and potentiostatic time-current transient test) and metallographic examination (microstructure and elemental distribution), the following results were obtained. The more the volume content of nitrogen in the shielding gas were, the lower critical current density for passivity was observed. In comparison with weldments solidified through the primary $\delta$-ferrite solidification mode and the primary ${\gamma}$-solidification mode, the former showed higher critical pitting potential and a longer incubation time for stable pit initiation than the latter. However, in the pit propagation stage the former exhibited a faster dissolution rate than the latter. These results were believed to ee related to the distribution of alloying elements such as Cr, Mo, Ni and S.

  • Biological nitrogen removal, using a continuous flow packed-bed reactor (CPBR) in a consecutive nitrification and denitrification process, was evaluated. An apparent decline in the nitrification efficiency coincided with the steady increase in $NH_4{^+}$-N load. Sustained nitrification efficiency was found to be higher at longer empty bed contact times (EBCTs). The relationship between the rate of alkalinity consumption and $NH_4{^+}$-N utilization ratio followed zero-order reaction kinetics. The heterotrophic denitrification rate at a carbon-tonitrogen (C/N) ratio of >4 was found to be >74%. This rate was higher by a factor of 8.5 or 8.9 for $NO_3{^-}$-N/volatile solids (VS)/day or $NO_3{^-}-N/m^3$ ceramic media/day, respectively, relative to the rates measured at a C/N ratio of 1.1. Autotrophic denitrification efficiencies were 80-90%. It corresponds to an average denitrification rate of 0.96 kg $NO_3{^-}-N/m^3$ ceramic media/day and a relevant average denitrification rate of 0.28 g $NO_3{^-}$-N/g VS/day, were also obtained. Results presented here also constitute the usability of an innovative porous sulfur ceramic media. This enhanced the dissolution rate of elemental sulfur via a higher contact surface area.
