  • To elucidate the pattern of nutrient absorption and endosperm consumption as the seedling age of rice, Dongjinbyeo was raised in the seedling box with different nitrogen levels. Absorption of nitrogen and phosphorus were high in the order of artificial seed bed soil, sand with N-1g /box and sand without N from 3 and 5 days after seeding but, potassium wasn't significantly different between sand+N-1g /box and sand. Endosperm consumption rate was high in the order of artificial seed bed soil, sand + N-1g /box and sand but, endosperm dependence rate (endosperm consumption /top dry weight) was vice versa. Seedling height and dry weight were higher in the order of artificial seed bed soil, sand+N-1g /box and sand from 3 days after seeding, number of leaves were more from 5 days after seeding in same order.

  • The small and the large intestine of swine represent the organs that extract nutrients from feedstuffs through digestion and fermentation and that allow their absorption and incorporation into the blood circulation. Special attention is directed towards the small intestine of young pigs since the transition to a solid diet at weaning exerts major impacts on the structural and functional integrity of the small intestine. Dietary factors involved in postweaning changes of gut morphology and biochemistry such as removal of bioactive compounds in sows milk at weaning, anti-nutritional factors in weaner diets, dietary fiber and the role of voluntary feed intake will be elucidated. The microbial function of the large intestine which is carried out by a diverse population of microorganisms is dependent on substrate availability. Short chain fatty acids as main fermentation products contribute to the energy supply of the host but they are also important for the maintenance of the morphological and functional integrity of the epithelium in the colon. As a result of bacterial nitrogen assimilation in the large intestine, nitrogen is shifted from the urinary to the fecal excretion route thus saving metabolic energy to the pig because less ammonia would become available for conversion to urea.

  • A hybrid thermosetting maleimido epoxy compound 4-(N-maleimidophenyl) glycidylether (N-MPGE) containing Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) ions was prepared by curing N-MPGE and tetradentate Schiff base Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) complexes. The curing polymerization reaction of N-MPGE with metal complexes as curing agents was studied. The cured samples were studied for thermal stability, chemical (acid/alkali/solvent) and water absorption resistance and homogeneity of the cured systems. The tetradentate Schiff base, 3-[(Z)-2-piperazin-1-yl-ethylimino]-1,3-dihydro indol-2-one was synthesized by the condensation of Isatin (Indole-2, 3-dione) with 1-(2-aminoethyl)piperazine (AEP). Its complexes with Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) have been synthesized and characterized by microanalysis, conductivity, Uv-Visible, FT-IR, TGA and magnetic susceptibility measurements. The spectral data revealed that the ligand acts as a neutral tetradentate Schiff base and coordinating through the azomethine nitrogen, two piperazine nitrogen atoms and carbonyl oxygen.

  • The effects of nitrogen ion implantation on vacuum evaporated cadmium sulphide (CdS) thin films were investigated by X-ray diffraction, optical transmittance spectra, and Raman scattering studies. The as-deposited CdS films have a hexagonal structure with preferential (0 0 2) orientation. Formation of Cd metallic clusters was observed in ion implanted films from the XRD patterns. The band gap of N+ implanted films decreased, whereas the optical absorption coefficient values increased with the increase of implantation dose. The Raman peak position appeared at 299 cm-1 and the FWHM increased with the ion dose. A decrease in the area of Raman peak of CdS Al(LO) mode is seen on implantation.

  • Preservation methods on the physiological and brewing technical characters in bottom and top brewing yeast strains were investigated. The preserved yeasts were reactivated after 24 months storage and grown up to stationary phase. The samples of filter paper storage indicated a higher cell growth and viability during propagation than those of nitrogen and lyophilization storage independent on propagation temperature. In addition, the filter paper storage demonstrated a faster absorption of free amino nitrogen and a highest level of higher aliphatic alcohols production during propagation than other preservation methods, which can be attributed to intensive cell growth during propagation. Moreover, the filter paper storage showed a faster accumulation for glycogen and trehalose during propagation, whereas, in particular, lyophilization storage noted a longer adaptation time regarding synthesis of glycogen and trehalose with delayed cell growth. In beer analysis, the filter paper storage formed an increased higher aliphatic alcohols than control. In conclusion, the preservation of filter paper affected positively on yeast growth, viability and beer quality independent on propagation temperature. In addition, in this study, it was obtained that the HICF and Helm-test can be involved as rapid methods for determination of flocculation capacity.

  • The 9.17MeV gamma-rays from the $^{13}C(p,\;{\gamma})^{14}N,\;^{14}N({\gamma},\;{\gamma})^{14}N$ reactions were measured. The incident 9.17MeV gamma-ray was produced from the $^{13}C(p,\;{\gamma})^{14}N$ reaction at Ep=1.75MeV resonance. The 1.75MeV proton beam was accelerated using the 3MV SNU-AMS Tandetron and 1.7MV KIGAM Tandem accelerators. The enriched 13C target was $121{\mu}g/cm^2$ self-supporting foil, and we used liquid nitrogen as a resonant absorption target. We used a HP-Ge detector with 30% efficiency and less 2keV energy resolution. We developed new method to detect the scattered 9.17MeV gamma-ray from the nitrogen target by using the energy difference between the Doppler shifted gamma-ray from the $^{13}C(p,\;{\gamma})^{14}N$ reaction and the resonant absorbed and rescattered gamma-ray from the $^{14}N({\gamma},\;{\gamma})^{14}N$ reaction.

  • This study introduces a new method of combining Imaging Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy (Imaging-DOAS) data and plume dispersion formulas for power plant emissions to determine the three-dimensional structure of a dispersing pollution plume and the spatial distributions of trace gas volume mixing ratios (VMRs) under conditions of negligible water droplet and aerosol effects on radiative transfer within the plume. This novel remote-sensing method, applied to a power plant stack plume, was used to calculate the two-dimensional distributions of sulfur dioxide ($SO_2$) and nitrogen dioxide ($NO_2$) VMRs in stack emissions for the first time. High $SO_2$ VMRs were observed only near the emission source, whereas high $NO_2$ VMRs were observed at locations several hundreds of meters away from the initial emission. The results of this study demonstrate the capability of this new method as a tool for estimating plume dimensions and trace gas VMRs in power plant emissions.

  • Application of compost to vineyards reduced nitrogen absorption into vine roots, increased soil nitrogen content, soil pH, soil organic matter, and fine roots density. Long pruning reduced the growth of 'Campbell Early' of Wakeman's training system. Maintaining proper vine shape was very difficult because long pruning decreased the vine growth. In conclusion, the application of compost to 'Campbell Early', 'Kyoho', 'Sheridan' vineyard decreased vine growth, increased soil organic matter, soil pH and favored the rhizosphere condition and the growth of fine roots increased.

  • Aluminum nitride (AlN) thin films have been deposited on Si substrate by using reactive RF magnetron sputtering method in a gas mixture of Ar and $N_2$ at different $N_2$ concentration. It was found that $N_2$ concentration was varied in the range up to 20-100%, highly c-axis oriented film can be obtained at 50% $N_2$ with full width at half maximum (FWHM) $4.5^{\circ}$. Decrease in surface roughness from 7.5 nm to 4.6 nm found to be associated with decrease in grain size, with $N_2$ concentration; however, the AlN film fabricated at 20% $N_2$ exhibited a granular type of structure with non-uniform grains. The absorption peak was observed around 675 $cm^{-1}$ in fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). It is concluded that the AlN film deposited at $N_2$ concentration of 50% exhibited the most desirable properties for the application of high-frequency surface acoustic devices.

  • Microalgae are attracting much attention as promising, eco-friendly producers of bioenergy due to their fast growth, absorption of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, and production capacity in wastewater and salt water. However, microalgae can only accumulate large quantities of lipid in abiotic stress, which reduces productivity by decreasing cell growth. In this study, the strategy was investigated to increase cell viability and lipid production by overexpressing S-adenosylmethionine (SAM) synthetase (SAMS) in the microalga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii. SAM is a substance that plays an important role in various intracellular biochemical reactions, such as cell proliferation and stress response, and the overexpression of SAMS could allow cells to ithstand the abiotic stress and increase productivity. Compared to wild-type C. reinhardtii, recombinant cells overexpressing SAMS grew 1.56-fold faster and produced 1.51-fold more lipids in a nitrogen-depleted medium. Furthermore, under saline-stress conditions, the survival rate and lipid accumulation were 1.56 and 2.04 times higher in the SAMS-overexpressing strain, respectively. These results suggest that the overexpression of SAMS in recombinant C. reinhardtii has high potential in the industrial-scale production of biofuels and various other high-value-added materials.
