To analyze complicated phenomena on the fluid hydrodynamic and the elastic deformation between sliding body surfaces, an analysis to the elastohydrodynamic lubrication of sliding contacts has been developed taking into account the thermal and non-Newtonian effects. The computational technique handled the simultaneous solution of the non-Newtonian hydrodynamic effects, elasticity, the load, the viscosity variation, and temperatures rise. The results included the lubricant pressure profile, film thickness, velocity, shear stress, and temperature distribution, and the sliding frictional force on the surface at various slip conditions. These factors showed a great influence on the behavior resulted in the film shape and pressure distribution. Especially, Non-Newtonian effects and temperature rise by the sliding friction force acted as important roles in the lubrication performance.
In this research, experimental studies leave been performed on the hydrodynamic interaction between a spherical particle and a plane wall by measuring the force between the particle and wall. To approach the system as a resistance problem, a servo-driving system was set-up by assembling a microstepping motor, a ball screw and a linear motion guide for the particle motion. Glycerin and dilute solution of polyacrylamide in glycerin were used as Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids, respectively. The polymer solution behaves like a Boger fluid when the concentration is 1,000 ppm or less. The experimental results were compared with the asymptotic solution of Stokes equation. The result shows that fluid inertia plays all important role in the particle-wall interaction in Newtonian fluid. This implies that the motion of two particles in suspension is not reversible even in Newtonian fluid. In non-Newtonian fluid, normal stress difference and viscoelasticity play important roles as expected. In the dilute solution weak shear thinning and the migration of polymer molecules in the inhomogeneous flow field also affect the physic of the problem.
Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) is an undulatory nematode which exhibits two distinct locomotion types of swimming and crawling. Although in its natural habitat C. elegans lives in a non-Newtonian fluidic environment, our current understanding has been limited to the behavior of C. elegans in a simple Newtonian fluid. Here, we present some experimental results on the penetrating behavior of C. elegans at the interface from liquid to solid environment. Once C. elegans, which otherwise swims freely in a liquid, makes a contact to the solid gel boundary, it begins to penetrate vertically to the surface by changing its stroke motion characterized by a stiffer body shape and a slow stroke frequency. The particle image velocimetry (PIV) analysis reveals the flow streamlines produced by the stroke of worm. For the worm that crawls on a solid surface, we utilize a technique of traction force microscopy (TFM) to find that the crawling nematode forms localized force islands along the body where makes direct contacts to the gel surface.
This paper is concerned with spring back after sheet forming of bulk amorphous alloys in the super cooled liquid state. The temperature-dependence and strain-rate dependence of Newtonian/non-Newtonian viscosities as well as the stress overshoot/undershoot behavior of amorphous alloys are reflected in the thermo-mechanical Finite Element simulations. Hemispherical deep drawing operations are simulated for various forming conditions such as punch velocity, die corner radius, friction, blank holder force, clearance and initial forming temperature. Here, spring back by an instantaneous elastic unloading was followed by thermal deformation during cooling and two modes of spring backs are examined in detail. It could be concluded that the superior sheet formability of an amorphous alloy can be obtained by taking the proper forming conditions for loading/unloading.
In this study, using the governing equations for thermohydrodyamic lubrication involving the homogeneous mixture of incompressible fluid derived by based on the principle of continuum mechanics, it is discussed the effects of water dispersed within engine oil on the performance of high speed journal bearing of a turbocharger. The governing equations are the general equations being able to be applied on the mixture of Newtonian fluid and non-Newtonian fluid. Here, the fluid viscosity index, n of power-law non-Newtonian fluid is supposed to be 1 for the application of the journal bearing on a turbocharger lubricated with the mixture of two Newtonian fluids, water dispersed within engine oil. The results related with the bearing performance are showed that the friction force and bearing load capacity decrease as increasing the volume percent of water.

Non-Newtonian fluid mechanics takes charge of an important role in the oil industries. Especially in the oil well drilling process, the drilling fluid such as mud keeps the drill bit cool and clean during drilling, with suspending drill cuttings and lubricating a drill bit. The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of fluid mud rheological properties to predict different characteristics of non-Newtonian fluid in the mud mixing tank on offshore drilling platforms. In this paper, ANSYS fluent package was used for the simulation to solve the hydrodynamic force and to evaluate mud mixing time. Prediction of the power consumption and the pumping effectiveness has been presented with different operating fluid models as Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluid. The comparison between Newtonain mud model and non-Newtonian mud model is confirmed by the CFD simulation method of drilling mud mixing tank. The results present useful information for the design of the drilling mud mixing tanks and provide some guidance on the use of CFD tool for such non-Newtonian fluid flow.
In this study, we firstly define equations of motion based on the traditional model Newtonian mechanics in terms of the Frenet frame adapted to the trajectory of the moving particle in Lie groups. Then, we compute energy on the moving particle in resultant force field by using geometrical description of the curvature and torsion of the trajectory belonging to the particle. We also investigate the relation between energy on the moving particle in different force fields and energy on the particle in Frenet vector fields.
The effectiveness of the treatment of intracranial aneurysms with endovascular coiling depends on coil packing density, the location of aneurysm, its neck dimensions with respect to the aneurysm dome, and its size with respect to the surrounding tissue. Clinical data also suggests that the aneurysm neck size is the main predictor of aneurysm recanalization. In this study, the force impinging on the aneurysm neck in an idealized aneurysm was calculated by using a three dimensional finite volume method for the non-Newtonian incompressible laminar flow. To quantify the effect of neck size on the impingement force, calculations were performed for aneurysm neck diameters (Da) varying from 10% to 100% of the parent artery diameter (Dp). Also, maximum impingement forces were represented by a function of the ratio of the aneurysm neck to the diameter of the parent vessel. The results show that the hemodynamic forces exerted on the coil mass at the aneurysm neck due to the pulsatile blood flow are larger for wide necked aneurysms.
