Two New Records of Scopula (Lepidoptera: Geometridae) from Korea

  • Two species of Scopula, S. asthena Inoue, 1943 and S. tenuisocius Inoue, 1942, were newly recorded from Korea. Scopula asthena can be distinguished by the bipectinate male antennae and whitish wings with four blackish dots on each wing. This species is similar to S. superior (Butler, 1878) but differs in the large blackish discal dots on both wings. Scopula tenuisocius can be distinguished by its whitish forewing with light grayish, dentate antemedial line, short-line shaped discal dot and line light grayish, weakly rounded, dentate postmedial line, and whitish hindwing with a blackish discal dot and light grayish, undulating medial lines. Scopula tenuisocius is similar to S. floslactata (Haworth, 1809) but the species can be distinguished by the thinner and blackish subterminal line of the forewing that appears minutely dentate along the line. To date, 41 species of the genus Scopula are known in Korea.

  • The purpose of this study is to improve repeatability of a non-invasive blood glucose measurement. The portable NIR system that was newly integrated by our lab includes a tungsten halogen lamp, a specialized reflectance fiber optic probe and a photo diode array type InGaAs detector, which was developed by a microchip technology based on the lithography. Reflectance NIR spectra of finger tip were recorded by using a fiber optic probe. The probe was fixed in the system and subjects put their finger on the probe head. (omitted)

Newly recorded sea star Henricia oculata(Asteroidea: Spinulosida: Echinasteridae) in the East Sea, Korea

  • Henricia specimens were collected using fishing nets from the East Sea of Korea. The specimens were identified as Henricia oculata Pennant, 1777, belonging to the family Echinasteridae of the order Spinulosida. This species can be distinguished from other Henricia species by broad arms (R/r=4-4.1), rough skin, a thick arm base, three to nine minute delicate abactinal spines, and inferomarginal plates reniform in shape. This species superficially resembles H. pachyderma in its body size and wide papular areas but differs mainly in the number of papulae and abactinal spines, and the shape and arrangement of the inferomarginal plates. To date, two genera of Echinasteridae, Aleutihenricia and Henricia, with a total of 13 species, have been reported in Korea. The morphological characteristics of H. oculata are described, and photographs are provided.

Lobohalacarus weberi (Acari, Halacaridae) from Shallow Ground Waters in South Korea

  • Lobohalacarus weberi (Romijn and Viets, 1924) is added to the halacarid fauna of Korea as the third member of freshwater halacarid species. Both the genus and species are newly recorded from Korea. Halacarid mites were collected from two hillside wells and a streamside hyporheic zone in the southeastern region of South Korea. Lobohalacarus weberi is characterized by a well-developed frontal spine-like process, seven dorsal setae, the fourth segment of palp with a short distal and three long proximal setae, and tibiae of legs II to IV with two, one, two pectinate setae, respectively. A few minor individual variabilities were observed in the number of perigenital seta and genital acetabula, the setal armature on genua of legs, and the shape of spinule row on lateral claws.

Allium stenodon (= A. baekdusanense), a neglected member among the Korean flora

  • Allium stenodon (Amaryllidaceae) is reported as a returning member of the Korean flora. This species proved to be the only member of the section Sikkimensia among Korean Allium species, and it is easily distinguished by its cylindrical bulbs with fibrous to sometimes subreticulate tunics and blue to purple-blue perianth. Previously recognized A. baekdusanense is treated as an additional synonym of A. stenodon. Photographs and complete descriptions of A. stenodon are provided together with a dichotomous key to the Korean Allium species. In addition A. stenodon is newly recorded in Jilin province in China.

Six Newly Recorded Fungal Taxa from Freshwater Niche in Korea

  • Six interesting fungal strains were isolated during a survey of fungal diversity associated with freshwater; these strains were designated as CNUFC YJW2-22, CNUFC MSW11-6-2, CNUFC HRS5-3, CNUFC MSW242-6, CNUFC DMW2-2, and CNUFC CPWS-1. Based on a polyphasic approach including phylogenetic analyses of internal transcribed space (ITS), large subunit (LSU), beta-tubulin (BenA), and calmodulin (CaM) gene sequences, morphological analyses, the six strains were found to be identical to Acremonium guillematii, Cadophora novi-eboraci, Lectera nordwiniana, Mycoarthris corallina, Talaromyces siamensis, and Tetracladium globosum, respectively. To our knowledge, these are the first records of the rare Lectera, Mycoarthris, and Tetracladium genera in Korea, and the first reports of A. guillematii, C. novi-eboraci, L. nordwiniana, M. corallina, T. siamensis, and Te. globosum in a freshwater environment.

A New Species of the Genus Glypta (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae: Banchinae) from South Korea

  • One of the largest genera of subfamily Banchinae, the genus Glypta has been reported 505 species in the World. In this study, the genus Glypta is reported for the first time from South Korea. Twelve species are recognized, one of which is described as new: Glypta clypeorostrata sp. nov. We diagnose 11 newly recorded species(G. biauriculata, G. breviterebra, G. densepunctata, G. extincta, G. fronticornis, G. incisa, G. media, G. nigrina, G. talitzkii, G. tamanukii, and G. touyaensis) and provide a key along with digital images of 12 South Korean species.

Three Species of Spilomelinae (Lepidoptera, Crambidae) New to Korea

  • Three species of Spilomelinae, Camptomastix septentrionalis Inoue, 1982, Omiodes indistinctus (Warren, 1892) and Piletocera aegimiusalis (Walker, 1859), are reported for the first time from Korea. Camptomastix septentrionalis is distinguished from Camptomastix hisbonalis (Walker, 1859) in the smaller body size, the lack of a clear discal spot on the forewings, and having the less protruding costa of the valva in the male genitalia and the smaller antrum in the female genitalia. Omiodes indistinctus is distinguished from Omiodes tristrialis(Bremer, 1864) in having the narrower forewings with the faded postmedian and subbasal lines and a densely-setose, sclerotized area on the terminal part of uncus dorsally in the male genitalia. Piletocera aegimiusalis is distinguished from Piletocera sodalis(Leech, 1889) in the larger body size and the lack of a pale yellow patch on the hindwings. Photos of the external and genital features are provided for the three newly-recorded spilomeline species.

Newly recorded genera and species, Pantanalinema rosaneae and Alkalinema pantanalense (Leptolyngbyaceae, Cyanobacteria) isolated in Korea

  • Two strains of cyanobacteria were isolated from the soil of Seodaemun-gu, Seoul and from the gravel of the Ansung Stream, Gyeonggi Province, Korea, respectively. They were identified as Pantanalinema rosaneae and Alkalinema pantanalense under the Leptolyngbyaceae through the morphological, ecological, and molecular analyses and first reported in Korea. Belonging to the Leptolyngbya morphotypes, they are thin filamentous cyanobacteria and morphologically indistinguishable cryptic species. The strains of P. rosaneae and A. pantanalense isolated in Korea revealed the same cluster as their type species in the phylogenetic analysis using the 16S rRNA gene sequences, and similarities in the secondary structures of 16S-23S ITS sequences. Although both P. rosaneae and A. pantanalense were collected from water samples in the Pantanal wetland of Brazil, the P. rosaneae obtained in Korea, was soil-dwelling subaerophytic species whereas A. pantanalense was epilithic species living on gravel in the freshwater. Therefore, they are considered to have an extensive habitat.

Two Species of Thyatirinae (Lepidoptera, Drepanidae), New to Korea

  • Two species of the Drepanidae are newly recorded from Korea. Habrosyne indica formosana Werny, 1966 and Neodaruma tamanukii Matsumura, 1933. Habrosyne indica formosana can be distinguished by the blackish forewing with a large inverse triangular medial band and the whitish pink subtermen running from the apex to tornus, and the blackish hindwing. Neodaruma tamanukii can be distinguished by the dark grayish forewing with a pair of parallel undulating, blackish antemedial and postmedial lines and a large, renal-shaped discal dot, and a pale grayish undulating subterminal line of the forewing, and the whitish hindwing with a darkly colored postmedial line and subtermen. We provide the diagnosis and figures of adult and genitalia.
