The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between personality differences and marital conflict. In particular, this study examined what impact, if any, exists between groups married for fewer than five years(Group 1) and those married for five or more years(Group 2). The sample consisted of 368 married couples. Each couple was asked to complete two questionnaires: one for measuring marital conflict and another for assessing husbands' and wives' personalities using the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator(MBTI). The results of this study were as follows: First, between Group 1 and Group 2, marital conflict showed no differences. Second, no marital conflict, caused by the four types of personality, was found in Group 2. However, for Group 1, the marital conflict perceived by wives was influenced by J-P and S-N types of wives, and the marital conflict perceived by husbands was affected by J-P type of husbands and S-N type of wives. Third, for Group 1, the marital conflict perceived by wives was influenced by the difference between S-N types. The marital conflict perceived by husbands was affected by differences between S-N types and between J-P types. No marital conflict, caused by the difference of the four types of personality, was found in Group 2. The results showed that the four types of personality and the differences in personality types between the couples affected marital conflict, depending on the duration of marriage. Therefore, it is important for the newly married couple to comprehend their spouse's personality and to adjust their lifestyles stemming from their personality differences.
Objectives: The aim of this study was to explore perceived meanings of dating and marriage among well-educated Korean couples who were in optimal marriageable ages. Particularly, an emphasis was placed on finding out where the traditional gender norms and post-modern contexts intersect on the couples' course of dating and marriage. Method: We undertook a qualitative analysis of 8 couples (age: 26-34) dating. Participants were limited to university graduates of upper-middle rank universities in Seoul, South Korea. The rationale for choosing such sample was based on the idea that characteristics of class is inherent in the act of dating and marriage, and that such characteristics lead to different contextual experiences in dating and marriage. This study was based on interviews conducted over a three-month time span. The interviews were first transcribed into research text and then subjects and key categories were drawn from the transcripts for analysis. Results: Participants sought meanings of joy, learning, and self-improvement in dating, and they were free from traditional gender norms in their romantic relationships. They viewed marriage as having a permanent companionship with their partner, becoming independent from their parents, and/or a social norm to be followed. Participants reported mixed perceptions about marriage in such fashion that they described their parents' relationship in terms of a gendered leader-supporter relationship, while viewing their own relationship as being genderless partners. In transition to parenthood, however, they regressed to traditional gender norms dichotomized as women being a homemaker and men being a breadwinner. In sum, participants displayed expectations that were inconsistent with regard to dating and marriage over the study period. That is, during the course of dating and early marriage, they did not hold separated gender norms; however, when transitioning from being a newly married couple to giving their first childbirth, expectations shifted to traditional gender norms and values. Conclusion: This suggests that it is not marriage, but the experience of childbirth and motherhood, which strengthen traditional gendered norms, engendering regeneration of the gender norms in families. The results indicate that there is a need to promote co-parenting behavior among the newly-married couples and to educate gender equality about parent roles or for parents in South Korea so that they can overcome traditional gendered norms in family.
The purpose of this study is to explore whether wives communicate differently over the family life cycle(FLC), and whether their communication contents and frequencies are differently over the FLC. Marital communication scales are composed of six subfactors such as The selectivity of channel (SC), Channel direction (CD), communication style(CS), Comprehension of nonverbal communication (CNC), Communication contents and frequencies(CCF) and Olson's marital communication (LCQ). The number of the subjects are 582, who are living in Pusan in 1987 and they divided into six stages family life cycle; The newly married (FLC 1). The family with preschoolers(FLC 2), The family with schoolages (FLC3), The family with teenages(FLC4), The family with launching children(FLC 5) and The postparenthood (FLC 6). This study is surveyed by Frequencies and Mean score from six subfactors and tested by chi-square test and ANOVA. the results are as follows; 1) There are a few significant differences in CS and CNC by FLC. The wives from FLC 1 and FLC 2 use the most open communication style and them form FLC5 use the most closed style. There are revealed that comprehension of nonverbal communication is the highest of FLC2, but on FLC 1 it is the lowest. 2) There are significant difference in CCF. Children, Wive's life, Husband's life, Affection and sex and Empathy show significant differences over the over the FLC. Regardless of FLC, there are conclueded that Children, Wive's and husband's life and economy management are the most frequence communicative contents. These results suggest that there needs to be further investigation on Olson's marital communication scale for comparing another country with ours and on the training and programs for couple's skillful communication ability.
