  • A taxonomic examination of hydroids collected from the subtidal zones of Ulleungdo and Dokdo located in the East Sea of Korea from 2017 to 2023 was conducted. Through this study, Antennella aurantia n. sp., a new species belonging to the family Halopterididae, was newly added to the hydrozoan fauna of Korea. This new species is clearly distinguished from similar species by the different morphology and size of the hydrothecae, lateral nematothecae, and gonothecae. By comparing the 16S rRNA sequence with 7 recorded species within the Antennella, the interspecific genetic distance to the new species was 8.2-28.9%, which is very high compared to the intraspecific variation of 0.0%, showing that it was clearly distinguished from other species. As a result of this study, a total of 4 Antennella species are reported in the hydrozoan fauna of Korea.

  • A new species, Miscanthus wangpicheonensis of section Kariyasua, is described and illustrated from the morphological characteristics based on a type specimen collected from Gyeongsangbuk-do. This new species is similar to Miscanthus sacchariflorus (Maxim.) Hack., and M. longiberbis (Hack.) Nakai. The characters which distinguish the above two species are short leaves and racemes, callus hairs 1-1.5-times longer than spikelet, and well-developed awns of spikelet. The specific epithet, "wangpicheonensis", is based on the name of the locality where the new species is found. We assume this new species originated from the hybridization of Miscanthus sacchariflorus (Maxim.) Hack., and M. longiberbis (Hack.) Nakai. Miscanthus wangpicheonensis is found in only one locality in Uljin-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do, Republic of Korea.

  • The present study summarizes the occurrence, distribution and autecology of 12 taxa of the class Cyanophyceae collected from several swamps, reservoir and highland wetlands in South Korea from 2009 to 2012. A new species, Anabaena koreana sp. nov. and 11 taxa of blue-green algae newly recorded are described and illustrated. Anabaena koreana is similar to A. oumiana, A. spiroides and A. crassa in that the trichomes form regular coils. However, A. koreana is distinguished from these three species by the morphological characteristics of the vegetative cell, heterocyst, and akinet shape and size. This study considers 12 blue-green algal species, including a new species, Anabaena koreana sp. nov. and 11 species that are recorded for the first time in the Korean freshwater algal flora. Among them, the genus Nostochopsis Wood ex Bornet et Flahault 1886 had not previously been recorded in Korea.

  • Nine new species of genus Ircinia (Demospongiae: Dictyoceratida: Irciniidae) from Jejudo Island, Korea are described. All of the new species are distinguished from the others reported species of Ircinia by the skeletal structure, especially massive fasciculate primary fibres. The characters of genus Ircinia have primary fibres cored with foreign debris and no cored secondary fibres. Primary fibres are not easy to distinguish from secondary fibres if they are not cored. Secondary web has perforated plate or meshed net. All new species have loosely arranged skeletal fibres network.

  • A new species of the cave-dwelling springtail Lethemurus coreanus Chang and Bae, sp. n. is described from Korea. Lethemurus coreanus can be distinguished from congeners by the spine-like setae on the tibiotarsus, numbers of dental spines, number of setae on the trochanteral organ, and body macrochaetae chaetotaxy. A key to the species of Lethemurus is provided.

  • A new copepod species, Cletocamptus koreanus, is described from estuaries and salt marshes on south and southwest coasts in Korea. Cletocamptus koreanus n. sp. evidently belongs to C. deitersi species group in sharing 6-segmented antennule, 3 setae on antennary exopod, leg 1 with endopod shorter than exopod, and 2+1 inner setae on the third exopodal segments of legs 3-4. However, C. koreanus is distinguished from its allied congeneric species by different setal armatures of mandibular palp, antennary exopod, endopod of female leg 2 and the third exopodal segments of legs 3-4, and relative length and shape of apophysis of male leg 3 enp 2. Description and taxonomic accounts of the new species are presented herein, with detailed illustrations and scanning electron microscope photomicrographs. Discussion on the affinities with other species of C. deitersi group are provided, along with brief comments on the morphological discrepancies between the new species from Korea and other Asian species from China and India.
