  • A new species of the genus Biemna(Demospongiae: Poecilosclerida: Desmacellidae), Biemna hongdoensis n. sp. was collected from Hongdo Island, Korea by SCUBA diving in 2004. B. hongdoensis n. sp. is closely related to B. megalosigma Hentshel, 1912 in their spicules, but the styles and sigmas of new species are larger than B. megalosigma's and microxeas and raphides of new species are smaller than B. megalosigma's. Also, new species has not spheres. The stubby conulose are distributed throughout the surface of new species.

  • Gammarus gageoensis n. sp., a new species of freshwater gammarid, was collected from Gageodo Island, South Korea. This new species is characterized in terms of its morphology by the flagellum of antenna 2 with calceoli, the pereopods 3 and 4 with numerous long curled setae on the posterior margins, the terminal article of the outer ramus in uropod 3, which is longer than the adjacent spines, and the presence of both rami with long simple setae. The morphological characters of the new species that are different to related species are presented in the text. This paper also compares the new species to related species by the partial sequence of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (CO1) gene. The sequence difference, consisting of a 39-44% difference relative to closely related species, is also large enough to designate this gammarid as a different species from other freshwater gammarid species. This is the first finding of a new species of Korean freshwater gammarid since 1992. Including this new species, a total of 10 species are known to Korea.

  • The characteristics of insect communities in specific localities reflect climatic and environmental status and change. We investigated the description pattern of new insect species by reviewing announcements of new or newly recorded insects in Korea published in five systematic journals between 1999 and 2009: Entomological Research (1999-2009), Insect Koreana (1999-2003), Journal of Asia-Pacific Entomology (1999-2009), Korean Journal of Applied Entomology (1999-2009), and Korean Journal of Systematic Zoology (1999-2009). A total of 757 new species were reported in 299 research papers. More than 85% of the newly described or reported species belonged to four orders: Coleoptera (225 species), Lepidoptera (202 species), Hymenoptera (141 species), and Diptera (82 species). The number of new species fluctuated from year to year, and a few major authors described most species. The graph of the cumulative number of species described in Korea was not asymptotic. We also examined the decadal trends in the proportion of species according to their biogeographical origin. The numbers of northern (Palearctic and Nearctic) and southern (Oriental) species recorded in Korea between 1999 and 2009 were increasing mainly due to the recent taxonomic research environment. It is also possible that recent climatic change induces new migrants toKorea from more southern parts of Oriental region, but more information is needed to confirm this hypothesis.

  • A new species, Tiphia fuscopterum Kim and Han, is described based on two specimens collected in Korea and Japan. We also report Tiphia antigenata Allen et Jaynes for the first time in Korea. Tiphia ogurai Tsuneki is synonymized with T. antigenata. Detailed descriptions and digital images of these species are provided.

  • Ten new species of two families (Suberitidae and Polymastidae) are described from Korea. Six new species in Suberitidae: Plicatellopsis ramosa n. sp., Pseudosuberites anheungensis n. sp. P. youngilensis n. sp., Suberites hwasunensis n. sp., S. chujaensis n. sp. and S. rugosa n. sp. are compared with other similar reported species. All new species differ from previously reported species in morphology, texture, color, skeletal structure, and spicule type. Four new species in Polymastidae: Polymastia fistula n. sp., P. sasuensis n. sp., P. viridis n. sp., and Weberella haengwonensis n. sp. are different from previously reported species in the growth form of papillaes and fistules, color and spicule types. For example, Weberella haengwonensis is similar to Weberella verrucosa in shape, but differs based on surface papillaes and spicule sizes.

  • A preliminary list of the following four tephritoid families is provided including 30 Korean species, of which 12 are new to Korea: two Lonchaeidae, three Pallopteridae (two new to Korea), 17 Platystomatidae (two new to Korea), and eight Ulidiidae (all new to Korea). This list is mainly based on the insect collection at the Yonsei University Wonju Campus and on previous publications concerning these taxa. Although a full taxonomic revision for each family is required in the long term, this preliminary list will provide a useful starting point to further investigation of these families. For the other three tephritoid families known in Korea but not treated in the present study, 89 species of Tephritidae, 14 species of Pyrgotidae, and one species of the rare family Ctenostylidae have been reported previously. A total of 134 species in seven families are officially recognized for the Korean fauna of the superfamily Tephritoidea.

  • A new species of the genus Smenospongia (Dictyoceratida, Thorectidae), S. coreana n. sp., is described from Gageodo Island, Korea. This new species is readily distinguished from the other species of Smenospongia by the un-lobated growth forms and un-crowded primary fibres. S. aurea and S. lamellata are no distinction between primary and secondary elements, but this species is easily distinguished from them. The matrix easily derived from the fibres. This species has five sesterterpenes, three scalaranetypes and two linear furanosesterterpenes, in chemical compounds.

  • Ten Korean eumenine wasp species of the genus Stenodynerus, including one new species and six newly recorded species (Stenodynerus chinensis simillimus, S. coreanus, S. clypeopictus, S. funebris, S. frauenfeldi, S. Kalinowskii, S. pappi, S. pullus, S. tergitus sp. nov., S. tokyanus) from Korea were taxonomically reviewed. The male of S. pappi was collected for the first time. Additional characters to distinguish several congeners were also discussed.
