  • The continuous exploration in deep seawater from Korea makes us lead the discovery of ancient Chlorophyta, Palmophyllum, in the Korean coast. The phylogenetic analyses of 18S rRNA and rbcL genes demonstrate that our specimens are Palmophyllum crassum (Naccari) Rabenhorst, recorded in Japan and clearly distinguished from P. umbracola from New Zealand and California, USA. Palmophyllum crassum grows in the subtidal region, 8-30 m deep, and has a crustose thallus which is closely adherent to substrates such as non-geniculate crustose coralline algae, sponge, shells, or rocks. P. crassum is composed of numerous spherical cells embedded in the gelatinous matrix. The discovery of this ancient green seaweed implies that the Korean coast is one of the hotspots of algal species diversity and has the suitable marine environment for algal speciation. We suggest the grounds to conserve the Korean coast environmentally as the biodiversity center of marine species by studying the phylogeny of seaweeds.

  • Korea government established the energy technology development plan (2011-2020) and declared to be a leader of the green energy technologies. The plan aims for 10% market share in the green energy industry, 12% energy efficiency improvement, and 15% greenhouse gas reduction. In order to achieve these goals, the government has tried to calculate the whole scale of national energy R&D investment, annual budget and specific expenditures for new technologies by computer simulation. The simulation modules include the R&D investment model, GDP model, energy consumption and $CO_2$ emission model by System Dynamics. Based on these simulation modules, I tested various scenarios for effectiveness of energy R&D investments until 2020. The results show that Korea should increase national energy R&D investment to 2.3 billion U.S. dollars, and switch the investment from electricity and nuclear power to the renewable energy.

  • Recycling involves processing used materials into new products and remanufacturing is an industrial process in which worn-out products are restored to like-new condition. Recycling and remanufacturing industry is environmentally and economically important industry and provides significant benefits to prevent waste of potentially useful materials and reduce energy usage. The purpose of this research is to investigate the trend of recycling and remanufacturing industry in Korea and other countries like Germany, Japan and America. The yield information is generally quite valuable to promote green growth industry as an important alternative in the 21st century.

  • The new forming method, Pressureless Powder Packing Forming Method was applied to the manufacturing of reaction sintered SiC. After the experiments of vibratory powder packing and binder infiltration, the abrasive SiC powder of which mean size is 45${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ was selected to this forming method. Uniform green bodies with porosity of 45% and narrow pore size distribution could be formed by this new forming method. Also, complex or varied cross-sectional shapes could be easily manufactured through the silicone rubber mould used in this forming method. Maximum 15 wt% amorphous carbon was penetrated into green body by multi impregnation-carbonization cycles. And reaction-bonded SiC was manufactured by infiltration of SiC-carbon shaped bodies with liquid silicon.

  • We report the syntheses, photophysical properties and device performances of solution processible host material for green-phosphorescent OLEDs. The butterfly-shaped new host materials with nonconjugated linkage of carbazole and fluorene moieties have large triple energy band gap around 2.8 eV. All of the EL devices exhibited turn-on voltages in the range of 4.8-5.0 V. GH-4 exhibited the best performance with a maximum current efficiency and power efficiency of 21.1 cd/A and 7.9 lm/W.

  • In this paper, a new barrier rib forming method of embossed barrier rib (EBR) formation process for the PDP rear panel was introduced. The process is mainly composed of green sheet fabrication, lamination of the green sheet on the rear glass panel having data electrodes, and roll embossing followed by firing. The EBR process has two advantages over the conventional barrier rib forming methods. One is the process requires less equipment investment than the conventional methods by about 20% of the current rear panel fabrication equipment investment owing to the simplified fabrication process. The other advantage is its reduced rear panel manufacturing cost by eliminating the time consuming and complicated processes and waste of materials in the conventional methods. In this study, general procedure of EBR fabrication process is described and the characteristics of prototype PDP using EBR panel are discussed.

  • A Mixed Volume and Boundary Integral Equation Method is applied for the effective analysis of plane elastostatic problems in unbounded solids containing general anisotropic inclusions and voids or isotropic inclusions. It should be noted that this newly developed numerical method does not require the Green's function for anisotropic inclusions to solve this class of problems since only Green's function for the unbounded isotropic matrix is involved in their formulation for the analysis. This new method can also be applied to general two-dimensional elastodynamic and elastostatic problems with arbitrary shapes and number of anisotropic inclusions and voids or isotropic inclusions. Through the analysis of plane elastostatic problems in unbounded isotropic matrix with orthotropic inclusions and voids or isotropic inclusions, it will be established that this new method is very accurate and effective for solving plane elastic problems in unbounded solids containing general anisotropic inclusions and voids or isotropic inclusions.
