  • The shape of cold strip for the stainless process has been become issue in quality recently, and hence POSCO (Pohang Iron & Steel Co., Ltd) developed an automatic control system for strip shape in the sendzimir mill. The strip shape is measured by an outward measuring roll and is controlled by As_U roll and first intermediate roll. As_U roll consists of 8 saddles, which are controlled vertically. The fist intermediate rolls, which are controlled horizontally, consist of two pairs of rolls up and down. A developed shape control system is applied to real plant by using fuzzy logic and neural network method to control actuators; As_U roll and first intermediate roll. This system composes mainly of three parts as a real-time system, input to output conditioner board, and man-machine interface. The actual shape is recognized by neural network and converted into symmetric shape. The fuzzy controller, based on the shape from neural network and sensor, controls positions of the As_U roll and first intermediate roll. This paper verifies the shape controller performance. The experiments are made on line for the sendzimir mill. The shape control performance shows very efficient for the target tracking, shape symmetry, and fluctuation of shape.

  • The objective of this study is to compensate the elastic recovery in the flexible forming process using the predictive models. The target shape was limited to two-dimensional shape having only one curvature radius in the longitudinal-direction. In order to predict the shape error the regression and neural network models were established based on the finite element (FE) simulations. A series of simulations were conducted considering input variables such as the elastic pad thickness, the thickness of plate, and the objective curvature radius. Then, at sampling points in the longitudinal-direction, the shape errors between formed and objective shapes could be calculated from the FE simulations as an output variable. These shape errors were expressed to a representative error value by the root mean square error (RMSE). To obtain the correct objective shape the die shape was adjusted by the closed-loop using the neural network model since the neural network model shows a higher capability of estimating the shape error than the regression model. Finally the experimental result shows that the formed shape almost agreed with the objective shape.

  • As the thickness of mobile communication devices is getting thinner, the size of the internal parts is also getting smaller. Among them, the battery case requires a high-level deep drawing technique because it has a rectangular shape with a large aspect ratio. In this study, the initial blank shape was optimized to minimize earing in a multi-stage deep drawing process using an artificial neural network(ANN). There has been no reported case of applying artificial neural network technology to the initial blank optimal design for a square case with large aspect ratio. The training data for ANN were obtained though simulation, and the model reliability was verified by performing comparative study with regression model using random sample test and goodness-of-fit test. Finally, the optimal design of the initial blank shape was performed through the verified ANN model.

  • Many hudraulic components have nonlinearities to some extent. These nonlinearities often cause the time delay, thus degrading the performance of the hydraulic control systems and making it difficult to modelthem. In this paper, a new vibration isolation control algorithm that eliminates the necessity of a sophiscated modeling of hydraulic system was proposed. The algotithm is a hybrid type control shecheme consisting of a linear controller and a hetero-synaptic neural network controller. Using this control scheme, simulations and experiments were performed for 1 DOF(Degree of freedom) and 2 DOF vibration isolation. The hybrid type control algorithm can isolate the base vibration signifcantly rather than linear control algorithm. And from the weights in hetero-synaptic neural network, we can get the 2nd equivalent differentialmodel of the hydraulic control system with on-line control operation. This equivalent model provides us with much information, such as stability and the characteristics of the control system.

  • Computer simulation is essential to design the suspension elements of railway vehicle. By computer simulation, engineers can assess the feasibility of a given design factors and change them to get a better design. But if one wishes to perform complex analysis on the simulation, such as railway vehicle dynamic, the computational time can become overwhelming. Therefore, many researchers have used a mega model that has a regression model made by sampling data through simulation. In this paper, the neural network is used a mega model that have twenty-nine design variables and forty-six responses. After this mega model is constructed, multi-objective optimal solutions are achieved by using the differential evolution. This paper shows that this optimization method using the neural network and the differential evolution is a very efficient tool to solve the complex optimization problem.

  • This paper is concerned with the design of two residual control charts for real-time monitoring of the continuous flow processes. Two different control charts are designed under the situation that observations are correlated each other. Kalman-Filter based model estimation is employed when the process model is known. A black-box approach, based on Back-Propagation Neural Network, is also applied for the design of control chart when there is no prior information of process model. Performance of the designed control charts and traditional control charts is evaluated. Average run length(ARL) is adopted as a criterion for comparison. Experimental results show that the designed control chart using the Neural Network's modeling has shorter ARL than that of the other control charts when process mean is shifted. This means that the designed control chart detects the out-of-control state of the process faster than the others. The designed control chart using the Kalman-Filter based model estimation also has better performance than traditional control chart when process is out-of-control state.

  • This study investigates the efficiencies of machine learning models, including artificial neural network (ANN), generalized regression neural network (GRNN), adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) and random forest (RF), for reservoir water level forecasting in the Chungju Dam, South Korea. The models' efficiencies are assessed based on model efficiency indices and graphical comparison. The forecasting results of the models are dependent on lead times and the combination of input variables. For lead time t = 1 day, ANFIS1 and ANN6 models yield superior forecasting results to RF6 and GRNN6 models. For lead time t = 5 days, ANN1 and RF6 models produce better forecasting results than ANFIS1 and GRNN3 models. For lead time t = 10 days, ANN3 and RF1 models perform better than ANFIS3 and GRNN3 models. It is found that ANN model yields the best performance for all lead times, in terms of model efficiency and graphical comparison. These results indicate that the optimal combination of input variables and forecasting models depending on lead times should be applied in reservoir water level forecasting, instead of the single combination of input variables and forecasting models for all lead times.

  • A new control method far vision-based autonomous vehicle is proposed to determine navigation direction by analyzing lane information from a camera and to navigate a vehicle. In this paper, characteristic featured data points are extracted from lane images using a lane recognition algorithm. Then the vehicle is controlled using new Levenberg-Marquardt neural network algorithm. To verify the usefulness of the algorithm, another algorithm, which utilizes the geometric relation of a camera and vehicle, is introduced. The second one involves transformation from an image coordinate to a vehicle coordinate, then steering is determined from Ackermann angle. The steering scheme using Ackermann angle is heavily depends on the correct geometric data of a vehicle and a camera. Meanwhile, the proposed neural network algorithm does not need geometric relations and it depends on the driving style of human driver. The proposed method is superior than other referenced neural network algorithms such as conjugate gradient method or gradient decent one in autonomous lateral control .

  • This paper proposes a convolutional neural network model for distinguishing areas occupied by obstacles from a LiDAR image converted from a 3D point cloud. The channels of a LiDAR image used as input consist of the distances to 3D points, the reflectivities of 3D points, and the heights of 3D points from the ground. The proposed model uses a LiDAR image as an input and outputs a result of a segmented LiDAR image. The proposed model adopts refinement modules with skip connections to segment a LiDAR image. The refinement modules with skip connections in the proposed model make it possible to construct a complex structure with a small number of parameters than a convolutional neural network model with a linear structure. Using the proposed model, it is possible to distinguish areas in a LiDAR image occupied by obstacles such as vehicles, pedestrians, and bicyclists. The proposed model can be applied to recognize surrounding obstacles and to search for safe paths.

  • We consider the problem of constructing observers for nonlinear systems with unknown inputs. It is shown that under some conditions, there exists an observer estimating the states of nonlinear systems with unknown inputs. Nonlinear observer design method using observer error linearization and the design technique of unknown input observer(UIO) for linear systems are used to derive conditions. Some illustrative examples are included. In this paper, a direct controller for nonlinear plants using a neural network is presented. The controller is composed of an approximate controller and a neural network auxiliary controller. The approximate controller gives the rough control and the neural network controller gives the complementary signal to further reduce the output tracking error. This method does not put too much restriction on the type of nonlinear plant to be controlled. In this method, a RBF neural network is trained and the system has a stable performance for the inputs it has been trained for. Simulation results show that it is very effective and can realize a satisfactory control of the nonlinear system
