  • A fuzzy logic Run-by-Run(RbR) controller and an in -line wafer characteristics prediction scheme for the rapid thermal processing system have been developed for the study of process repeatability. The fuzzy logic RbR controller provides a framework for controlling a process which is subject to disturbances such as shifts and drifts as a normal part of its operation. The fuzzy logic RbR controller combines the advantages of both fuzzy logic and feedback control. It has two components : fuzzy logic diagnostic system and model modification system. At first, a neural network model is constructed with the I/O data collected during the designed experiments. The wafer state after each run is assessed by the fuzzy logic diagnostic system with featuring step. The model modification system updates the existing neural network process model in case of process shift or drift, and then select a new recipe based on the updated model using genetic algorithm. After this procedure, wafer characteristics are predicted from the in-line wafer characteristics prediction model with principal component analysis. The fuzzy logic RbR controller has been applied to the control of Titanium SALICIDE process. After completing all of the above, it follows that: 1) the fuzzy logic RbR controller can compensate the process draft, and 2) the in-line wafer characteristics prediction scheme can reduce the measurement cost and time.

  • The recent researches on the automatic berthing control problems have used various kinds of tools as a control method such as expert system, fuzzy logic controllers and artificial neural network (ANN). Among them, ANN has proved to be one of the most effective and attractive options. In a marine context, the berthing maneuver is a complicated procedure in which both human experience and intensive control operations are involved. Nowadays, in most cases of berthing operation, auxiliary devices are used to make the schedule safer and faster but none of above researches has taken into account. In this study, ANN is applied to design the controllers for automatic ship berthing using assistant devices such as bow thruster and tug. Using back-propagation algorithm, we trained ANN with set of teaching data to get a minimal error between output values and desired values of four control outputs including rudder, propeller revolution, bow thruster and tug. Then, computer simulations of automatic berthing were carried out to verify the effectiveness of the system. The results of the simulations showed good performance for the proposed berthing control system.

  • Past and current customer behavior is the best predicator of future customer behavior. This paper introduces a procedure on personalized defection detection and prevention for an online game site. The basic idea for our defection detection and prevention is adopted from the observation that potential defectors have a tendency to take a couple of months or weeks to gradually change their behavior (i.e. trim-out their usage volume) before their eventual withdrawal. For this purpose, we suggest a SOM (Self-Organizing Map) based procedure to determine the possible states of customer behavior from past behavior data. Based on this representation of the state of behavior, potential defectors are detected by comparing their monitored trajectories of behavior states with frequent and confident trajectories of past defectors. The key feature of this study includes a defection prevention procedure which recommends the desirable behavior state for the ext period so as to lower the likelihood of defection. The defection prevention procedure can be used to design a marketing campaign on an individual basis because it provides desirable behavior patterns for the next period. The experiments demonstrate that our approach is effective for defection prevention and efficient for defection detection because it predicts potential defectors without deterioration of prediction accuracy compared to that of the MLP (Multi-Layer Perceptron) neural network.

  • Prediction of corporate failure using past financial data is a well-documented topic. Early studies of bankruptcy prediction used statistical techniques such as multiple discriminant analysis, logit and probit. Recently, however, numerous studies have demonstrated that artificial intelligence such as neural networks can be an alternative methodology for classification problems to which traditional statistical methods have long been applied. In building neural network model, the selection of independent and dependent variables should be approached with great care and should be treated as model construction process. Irrespective of the efficiency of a teaming procedure in terms of convergence, generalization and stability, the ultimate performance of the estimator will depend on the relevance of the selected input variables and the quality of the data used. Approaches developed in statistical methods such as correlation analysis and stepwise selection method are often very useful. These methods, however, may not be the optimal ones for the development of neural network model. In this paper, we propose a genetic algorithms approach to find an optimal or near optimal input variables fur neural network modeling. The proposed approach is demonstrated by applications to bankruptcy prediction modeling. Our experimental results show that this approach increases overall classification accuracy rate significantly.

  • Studies on target motion in 4-dimensional radiotherapy are being world-widely conducted to enhance treatment record and protection of normal organs. Prediction of tumor motion might be very useful and/or essential for especially free-breathing system during radiation delivery such as respiratory gating system and tumor tracking system. Neural network is powerful to express a time series with nonlinearity because its prediction algorithm is not governed by statistic formula but finds a rule of data expression. This study intended to assess applicability of neural network method to predict tumor motion in 4-dimensional radiotherapy. Scaled Conjugate Gradient algorithm was employed as a learning algorithm. Considering reparation data for 10 patients, prediction by the neural network algorithms was compared with the measurement by the real-time position management (RPM) system. The results showed that the neural network algorithm has the excellent accuracy of maximum absolute error smaller than 3 mm, except for the cases in which the maximum amplitude of respiration is over the range of respiration used in the learning process of neural network. It indicates the insufficient learning of the neural network for extrapolation. The problem could be solved by acquiring a full range of respiration before learning procedure. Further works are programmed to verify a feasibility of practical application for 4-dimensional treatment system, including prediction performance according to various system latency and irregular patterns of respiration.

  • In this paper, we introduce a new topology of Self-Organizing Polynomial Neural Networks (SOPNN) based on genetically optimized Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) and discuss its comprehensive design methodology involving mechanisms of genetic optimization. Let us recall that the design of the 'conventional' SOPNN uses the extended Group Method of Data Handling (GMDH) technique to exploit polynomials as well as to consider a fixed number of input nodes at polynomial neurons (or nodes) located in each layer. However, this design process does not guarantee that the conventional SOPNN generated through learning results in optimal network architecture. The design procedure applied in the construction of each layer of the SOPNN deals with its structural optimization involving the selection of preferred nodes (or PNs) with specific local characteristics (such as the number of input variables, the order of the polynomials, and input variables) and addresses specific aspects of parametric optimization. An aggregate performance index with a weighting factor is proposed in order to achieve a sound balance between the approximation and generalization (predictive) abilities of the model. To evaluate the performance of the GA-based SOPNN, the model is experimented using pH neutralization process data as well as sewage treatment process data. A comparative analysis indicates that the proposed SOPNN is the model having higher accuracy as well as more superb predictive capability than other intelligent models presented previously.reviously.

  • In this paper, we propose a new architecture of Self-Organizing Fuzzy Polynomial Neural Networks (SOFPNN) by means of consecutive optimization and also discuss its comprehensive design methodology involving mechanisms of genetic optimization. The network is based on a structurally as well as parametrically optimized fuzzy polynomial neurons (FPNs) conducted with the aid of information granulation and genetic algorithms. In structurally identification of FPN, the design procedure applied in the construction of each layer of a SOFPNN deals with its structural optimization involving the selection of preferred nodes (or FPNs) with specific local characteristics and addresses specific aspects of parametric optimization. In addition, the fuzzy rules used in the networks exploit the notion of information granules defined over system's variables and formed through the process of information granulation. That is, we determine the initial location (apexes) of membership functions and initial values of polynomial function being used in the premised and consequence part of the fuzzy rules respectively. This granulation is realized with the aid of the hard c-menas clustering method (HCM). For the parametric identification, we obtained the effective model that the axes of MFs are identified by GA to reflect characteristic of given data. Especially, the genetically dynamic search method is introduced in the identification of parameter. It helps lead to rapidly optimal convergence over a limited region or a boundary condition. To evaluate the performance of the proposed model, the model is experimented with using two time series data(gas furnace process, nonlinear system data, and NOx process data).

  • The design of major industrial facilities for the prevention of fatigue failure is customarily done by defining a set of transients and performing a calculation of cumulative usage factor. However, sometimes, the inherent conservatism or lack of details as well as unanticipated transients in old plant may cause maintenance problems. Even though several famous on-line monitoring and diagnosis systems have been developed world-widely, in this paper, a new system fur fatigue monitoring and life evaluation of crane is proposed to reduce customizing effort and purchasing cost. With regard to the system, at first, comprehensive operating transient data has been acquired at critical locations of crane. The real-time data were classified, by using adaptive resonance theory that is one of typical artificial neural network, into representative stress groups. Then the each classified stress pattern was mapped to calculated cumulative usage factor in accordance with ASME procedure. Thereby, promising results were obtained fur the crane and it is believed that the developed system can be applicable to other major facilities extensively.

  • Testing of ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) is one of the most popular and actual non-destructive techniques used in the estimation of the concrete properties in structures. In this paper, artificial neural network (ANN) approach has been proposed for the evaluation of relationship between concrete compressive strength, UPV, and density values by using the experimental data obtained from many cores taken from different reinforced concrete structures with different ages and unknown ratios of concrete mixtures. The presented approach enables to find practically concrete strengths in the reinforced concrete structures, whose records of concrete mixture ratios are not yet available. Thus, researchers can easily evaluate the compressive strength of concrete specimens by using UPV values. The method can be used in conditions including too many numbers of the structures and examinations to be done in restricted time duration. This method also contributes to a remarkable reduction of the computational time without any significant loss of accuracy. Statistic measures are used to evaluate the performance of the models. The comparison of the results clearly shows that the ANN approach can be used effectively to predict the compressive strength of concrete by using UPV and density data. In addition, the model architecture can be used as a non-destructive procedure for health monitoring of structural elements.

  • For the efficient stochastic optimization of steel structures for which a large number of analyses is required, artificial neural networks, which have emerged as a powerful tool that could have been used to replace time-consuming procedures in many scientific or engineering applications, are applied. They are utilized for the solution of the equilibrium equations resulting from the application of the finite element method in connection with the reanalysis type of problem, for which a large number of finite element analyses are required in this study. As such, the use of artificial neural networks to predict finite element analysis outputs simplifies and facilitates the performance of the stochastic optimal design of structural systems where a trained neural network is used to replace the structural reanalysis phase. Moreover, to improve efficiency of used artificial neural networks, genetic algorithm is utilized. The stochastic optimizer used in this study is an algorithm based on the evolution theory. The efficiency of the proposed procedure is examined in problems with both volume (weight) functions and real-world cost functions
