This paper presents a design for a throughput-efficient online relay selection scheme for dual-hop multi-relay cooperative networks. Problems arise with these networks due to unpredictability of the relaying link quality and high time-consumption to probe the dual-hop link. In this paper, we firstly propose a novel probing and relaying protocol, which greatly reduces the overhead of the dual-hop link estimation by leveraging the wireless broadcasting nature of the network. We then formulate an opportunistic relay selection process for the online decision-making, which uses a tradeoff between obtaining more link information to establish better cooperative relaying and minimizing the time cost for dual-hop link estimation to achieve higher throughput. Dynamic programming is used to construct the throughput-optimal control policy for a typically heterogeneous Rayleigh fading environment, and determines which relay to probe and when to transmit the data. Additionally, we extend the main results to mixed Rayleigh/Rician link scenarios, i.e., where one side of the relaying link experiences Rayleigh fading while the other has Rician distribution. Numerical results validate the effectiveness and superiority of our proposed relaying scheme, e.g., it achieves at least 107% throughput gain compared with the state of the art solution.
This paper proposes a new backoff scheme to improve the throughput of stations over wireless local area networks. It is designed to carry out the proposed backoff scheme using information of basic service area, such as number of stations, in terms of the throughput. Basic idea of the proposed backoff scheme is that we change the contention window size for backoff time as collisions increase. We evaluate the performance of the proposed backoff scheme using Markov model analysis and compare it with the IEEE 802.11e backoff scheme. The numerical results indicate that the Proposed backoff scheme may offer better performance than the conventional backoff scheme in terms of the throughput.
In this work, we consider performance modeling of a wireless sensor network with a time division multiple access (TDMA) media access protocol with slot reuse. It is assumed that all the nodes are peers of each other and they have two modes of operation, active and sleep modes. We model the sensor network as a Jackson network with unreliable nodes with on and off states. Active and sleep modes of sensor nodes are modeled with on and off states of unreliable nodes. We determine the joint distribution of the sensor node queue lengths in the network. From this result, we derive the probability distribution of the number of active nodes and blocking probability of node activation. Then, we present the mean packet delay, average sleep period of a node and the network throughput. We present numerical results as well as simulation results to verify the analysis. Finally, we discuss how the derived results may be used in the design of sensor networks.

In this paper, we propose frequency allocation and path selection scheme in underlay cognitive radio (CR) networks using network coding. In the proposed scheme, we choose the path with consideration of network coding and interference temperature in underlay CR networks and propose an optimization problem to maximize the system throughput of secondary users (SUs). Then, we represent the proposed optimization problem as the multi-dimensional multiple-choice knapsack problem and give the theoretical upper bound for the system throughput of SUs by using linear programming. Finally, we compute the system throughput of SUs by using brute-force search (BFS) and link quality first (LQF) scheme in underlay CR networks. Simulation results show that the system throughput of SUs with BFS is higher than that with LQF in underlay CR networks with and without application of network coding, respectively.

In this paper, we propose a new MAC protocol, namely DM-MMAC (Doze Mode Multi-Channel MAC) for ad hoe wireless networks which can utilize multiple channels effectively, thereby enhancing the network throughput considerably. Basically, the IEEE 802.11 specification allows for the use of multiple channels available at the physical layer, but its MAC protocol is designed only for a single channel with the fatal drawback, so called multi-channel hidden terminal problem in multi-channel environments. In this vein, several multi-channel MAC protocols have been proposed, but most of them demonstrate the performance problem that its throughput drastically decreases as the number of mobile hosts residing in a given network increases with small number of available channels. In this work, we tried to improve the performance of multi-channel MAC protocols in terms of network throughput as well as power saving effects by simplifying the channel assignment and channel capturing procedures and reducing the possibility of collisions between mobile hosts.
In this paper, a performance evaluation model of the switch router with the multiple-buffered crossbar switches is proposed and examined. Buffered switch technique is well known to solve the data collision problem of the crossbar switch. The proposed evaluation model is developed by investigating the transfer patterns of data packets in a switch with output-buffers. The performance of the multiple-buffered crossbar switch is analyzed. Steady state probability concept is used to simplify the analyzing processes. Two important parameters of the network performance, throughput and delay, are then evaluated. To validate the proposed analysis model, the simulation is carried out on a network that uses the multiple buffered crossbar switches. Less than $2\%$ differences between analysis and simulation results are observed. It is also shown that the network performance is significantly improved when the small number of buffer spaces is given. However, the throughput elevation is getting reduced and network delay becomes increasing as more buffer spaces are added in a switch.

In the near future, it is expected that there will be billions of connected devices using fifth generation (5G) network services. The recently available base stations (BSs) need to mitigate their loads without changing and at the least monetary cost. The available spectrum resources are limited and need to be exploited in an efficient way to meet the ever-increasing demand for services. Device to Device communication (D2D) technology will likely help satisfy the rapidly increasing capacity and also effectively offload traffic from the BS by distributing the transmission between D2D users from one side and the cellular users and the BS from the other side. In this paper, we propose to apply D2D overlay communication with cognitive radio capability in 5G networks to exploit unused spectrum resources taking into account the dynamic spectrum access. The performance metrics; throughput and delay are formulated and analyzed for CSMA-based medium access control (MAC) protocol that utilizes a common control channel for device users to negotiate the data channel and address the contention between those users. Device users can exploit the cognitive radio to access the data channels concurrently in the common interference area. Estimating the achievable throughput and delay in D2D communication in 5G networks is not exploited in previous studies using cognitive radio with CSMA-based MAC protocol to address the contention. From performance analysis, applying cognitive radio capability in D2D communication and allocating a common control channel for device users effectively improve the total aggregated network throughput by more than 60% compared to the individual D2D throughput without adding harmful interference to cellular network users. This approach can also reduce the delay.

Minimizing power consumption in bandwidth limited optical traffic grooming networks is presented as a two-objective optimization problem. Since the main objective is to route a connection, the network throughput is maximized first, and then the minimum power consumption solution is found for this maximized throughput. Both transparent IP over WDM (Tp-IPoWDM) and translucent IP over WDM (Tl-IPoWDM) network may be applied to examine such bi-objective algorithms. Simulations show that the bi-objective algorithms are more energy-efficient than the single objective algorithms where only the throughput is optimized. For a Tp-IPoWDM network, both link based ILP (LB-ILP) and path based ILP (PB-ILP) methods are formulated and solved. Simulation results show that PB-ILP can save more power than LB-ILP because PB-ILP has more path selections when lightpath lengths are limited. For a Tl-IPoWDM network, only PB-ILP is formulated and we show that the Tl-IPoWDM network consumes less energy than the Tp-IPoWDM network, especially under a sparse network topology. For both kinds of networks, it is shown that network energy efficiency can be improved by over-provisioning wavelengths, which gives the network more path choices.
Multi-hop relay networks have been widely considered as a promising solution to extend the coverage area and to reduce the deployment cost by deploying the relay stations (RSs) in mobile communication systems. Suitable deployment for the RSs is one of the most important features of the demand nodes (DNs) to obtain a high data transmission rate in such systems. Considering a tradeoff among the network throughput, the deployment budget, and the overall coverage of the systems, efficient RS deployment schemes and corresponding algorithms must be developed and designed. A novel cluster-based RS deployment scheme is proposed in this paper to select the appropriate deployment locations for the relay stations from the candidate positions. To make an ideal cluster distribution, the distances between the DNs are calculated when deploying the RSs. We take into account the traffic demands and adopt a uniform cluster concept to reduce the data transmission distances of the DNs. On the basis of the different candidate positions, the proposed scheme makes an adaptive decision for selecting the deployment sites of the RSs. A better network throughput and coverage ratio can be obtained by balancing the network load among the clusters. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme outperforms the previously known schemes in terms of the network throughput and the coverage ratio. Additionally, a suitable deployment budget can be implemented in multi-hop relay networks.

We propose a two-way multi-hop relaying scheme improving the throughput as well as enlarging the coverage for ship-to-ship communications in multi-ship marine networks. The proposed scheme reduces the time slots required for the data exchange by designing data transmission and network coding procedures in a sophisticated way based on two-phase digital network coding. Simulation results show that the proposed two-way multi-hop relaying scheme improves the throughput of the conventional one about 5/3 times.
