Multihop is the main communication style for wireless sensor networks composed of tiny sensor nodes. Until now, most applications have treated the periodic small sized sensing data. Recently, the burst traffic with the transient and continuous nature is increasingly introduced due to the advent of wireless multimedia sensor networks. Therefore, the efficient communication protocol to support this trend is required. In this paper, we propose a novel PIGAB(Packet Interval Gap based on Adaptive Backoff) protocol to efficiently transmit the burst data in multihop wireless sensor networks. The contention-based PIGAB protocol consists of the PIG(Packet Interval Gap) control algorithm in the source node and the MF(MAC-level Forwarding) algorithm in the relay node. The PIGAB is on basis of the newly proposed AB(Adaptive Backoff), CAB(Collision Avoidance Backoff), and UB(Uniform Backoff). These innovative algorithms and schemes can achieve the performance of network by adjusting the gap of every packet interval, recognizing the packet transmission of the hidden node. Through the simulations and experiments, we identify that the proposed PIGAB protocol considerably has the stable throughput and low latency in transmitting the burst data in multihop wireless sensor networks.

During the last decade, the multitude of advances attained in terminal computers, along with the introduction of mobile hand-held devices, and the deployment of high speed networks have led to a recent surge of interest in Quality of Service (QoS) for video applications. The main difficulty is that mobile devices experience disparate channel conditions, which results in different rates and patterns of packet loss. One way of making more efficient use of network resources in video services over wireless channels with heterogeneous characteristics to heterogeneous types of mobile device is to use a scalable video coding (SVC). An SVC divides a video stream into a base layer and a single or multiple enhancement layers. We have to ensure that the base layer of the video stream is successfully received and decoded by the subscribers, because it provides the basis for the subsequent decoding of the enhancement layer(s). At the same time, a system should be designed so that the enhancement layer(s) can be successfully decoded by as many users as possible, so that the average QoS is as high as possible. To accommodate these characteristics, we propose an efficient transmission scheme which incorporates SVC-aware dual-channel repetition to improve the perceived quality of services. We repeat the base-layer data over two channels, with different characteristics, to exploit transmission diversity. On the other hand, those channels are utilized to increase the data rate of enhancement layer data. This arrangement reduces service disruption under poor channel conditions by protecting the data that is more important to video decoding. Simulations show that our scheme safeguards the important packets and improves perceived video quality at a mobile device.
Retransmissions on the DLC layer are essential to ABR service providing the low CLR (cell loss ratio) over the unreliable wireless channel with high bit error rate. In the wireless ATM, the DLC layer below ATM layer performs the retransmission and reordering of the cells to recover the cell loss over the wireless channel and by doing so, the effect of the wireless channel characteristics with high bit error rate can be minimized on the ATM layer which is designed under the assumption of the low bit error rate. We propose, in this paper, the schemes to reflect the changes of the transmission rate over the wireless channel on the ABR rate control. Proposed scheme can control the source rate to the changes of the transmission rate over the wireless channel and reduce the required buffer size in the AP (access point). In the simulation, we assume that the DLC layer can inform the ATM layer of the wireless channel quality as good or bad. Our simulation results show that the proposed schemes require the smaller buffer size compared with the existing scheme, enhanced dynamic max rate control algorithm (EDMRCA). It is also shown that the scheme with the intelligent DLC which adjusts the rate to the wireless channel quality not only provides the low CLR with smaller buffer requirement but also improves the throughput by utilizing the wireless bandwidth more efficiently.

Building a large-scale testbed for Future Internet is very important to evaluate a new protocol and new network architecture designed by clean-slate approach. In Korea, new Future Internet testbed project, called FIRST (Future Internet Research for Sustainable Testbed), has been started since Mar. 2009 to design and test new protocols. This project is working together with ETRI and 5 universities. The FIRST@PC is to implement a virtualized hardware-accelerated PC-node by extending the functions of NetFPGA card and build a Future Internet testbed on the KOREN and KREONET for evaluating newly designed protocols and interesting applications. In this paper, we first briefly introduce FIRST@PC project and explain a 'MAC in IP Capsulator' user-space program using raw-socket in Linux to interconnect OpenFlow enabled switch sites on the KOREN and KREONET. After that, we address test results for TCP throughput performance for varying packet size. The test results show that the software based capsulator can support a reasonable bandwidth performance for most of applications.

In the environment of Internet of Things (IoT), IoT devices are limited by physical components such as power supply and memory, and also limited to their network performance in bandwidth, wireless channel, throughput, payload, etc. Despite these limitations, resources of IoT devices are shared with other IoT devices. Especially, remote management of the information of devices and patients are very important for the IoT healthcare service, moreover, providing the interoperability between the healthcare device and healthcare platform is essential. To meet these requirements, format of the message and the expressions for the data information and data transmission need to comply with suitable international standards for the IoT environment. However, the ISO/IEEE 11073 PHD (Personal Healthcare Device) standards, the existing international standards for the transmission of health informatics, does not consider the IoT environment, and therefore it is difficult to be applied for the IoT healthcare service. For this matter, we have designed and implemented the IoT healthcare system by applying the oneM2M, standards for the Internet of Things, and ISO/IEEE 11073 DIM (Domain Information Model), standards for the transmission of health informatics. For the implementation, the OM2M platform, which is based on the oneM2M standards, has been used. To evaluate the efficiency of transfer syntaxes between the healthcare device and OM2M platform, we have implemented comparative performance evaluation between HTTP and CoAP, and also between XML and JSON by comparing the packet size and number of packets in one transaction.

In Long Term Evolution-Advanced (LTE-A), small cell enhancement(SCE) has been developed as a cost-effective way of supporting exponentially increasing demand of wireless data services and satisfying the user quality of service(QoS). However, due to the dense and irregular distribution of a large number of small cells, the offloading scheme should be applied in the small cell network. In this paper, we propose an user offloading scheme for SCE in LTE-Advanced system. We divide the small cells into different clusters according to the reference signal received power(RSRP) from user equipment(UE). Within a cluster, We apply the user offloading scheme with the consideration of the number of users and interference conditions. Simulation results show that proposed scheme can improve the throughput, and spectral efficiency of small cell users. Eventually, proposed scheme can improve overall cell performance.

For forward error correction, DVB-S2, which is the digital video broadcasting forward error coding and modulation standard for satellite television, uses a system based the concatenation of BCH with LDPC inner coding. In DVB-S2 the LDPC codes are defined for 11 different code rates, which means that a DVB-S2 LDPC decoder should support multiple code rates. Seven of the 11 code rates, 3/5, 2/3, 3/4, 4/5, 5/6, 8/9, and 9/10, are regular and the rest four code rates, 1/4, 1/3, 2/5, and 1/2, are irregular. In this paper we propose a flexible decoder for the regular LDPC codes. We combined the partially parallel decoding architecture that has the advantages in the chip size, the memory efficiency, and the processing rate with Benes network to implement a DVB-S2 LDPC decoder that can support multiple code rates with a block size of 64,800 and can configure the interconnection between the variable nodes and the check nodes according to the parity-check matrix. The proposed decoder runs correctly at the frequency of 200MHz enabling 193.2Mbps decoding throughput. The area of the proposed decoder is $16.261m^2$ and the power dissipation is 198mW at a power supply voltage of 1.5V.
Amount of the web traffic web server handles are explosively increasing, which requires that the performance of the web server should be improved for the various web services. Although the analysis for the HTTP traffic with the proper tuning for the web server is essential, the research relevant to the subject are insignificant. In particular, although most of applications are implemented over HTTP 1.1 protocol, the researches mostly deal with the performance evaluation of the HTTP 1.0 protocol. Consequently, the modeling approach and the performance evaluation over HTTP 1.1 protocol have not been well formed. Therefore, basing on the HTTP 1.1 protocol supporting persistent connection, we present an analytical end-to-end tandem queueing model for web server to consider the specific hardware configuration inside web server beginning at accepting the user request until completing the service. we compare various performances between HTTP 1.0 and HTTP 1.1 under the overloading condition, and then analyze the characteristics of the HTTP traffic that include file size requested to web server, the OFF time between file transfers, the frequency of requests, and the temporal locality of requests. Presented model is verified through the comparing the server throughput according to varying requests rate with the real web server. Thereafter, we analyze the performance evaluation of the web server, according to the interrelation between TCP Listen queue size, the number of HTTP threads and the size of the network buffers.
A desktop grid, which is a computing grid composed of idle computing resources in a large network of desktop computers, is a promising platform for compute-intensive distributed computing applications. However, due to reliability and unpredictability of computing resources, effective scheduling of parallel computing applications on such a platform is a difficult problem. This paper proposes a new scheduling method aimed at reducing the total execution time of a parallel application on a desktop grid. The proposed method is based on utilizing the histories of execution behavior of individual computing nodes in the scheduling algorithm. In order to test out the feasibility of this idea, execution trace data were collected from a set of 40 desktop workstations over a period of seven weeks. Then, based on this data, the execution of several representative parallel applications were simulated using trace-driven simulation. The simulation results showed that the proposed method improves the execution time of the target applications significantly when compared to previous desktop grid scheduling methods. In addition, there were fewer instances of application suspension and failure.

In this paper, so as to improve spectral efficiency for cell-boundary users, we introduce a coordinated multi-point (CoMP) system, which is one of inter-cell cooperative transmission strategies studied in 3GPP long-term evolution-advanced (LTE-A) systems, and develop a system-level simulator to evaluate performance. To identify performance improvement of the system with inter-cell cooperative transmission, we select a 3GPP LTE system as a reference, which shows the highest performance among the existing mobile communication systems, and conduct a performance comparison. System-level simulation is performed based on widely-used OPNET tool. We implement modules including central unit (CU), CoMP eNodeB (CeNB), user equipment (UE), and multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channel model, while designing the inter-cell cooperative transmission system. Under WINNER wireless channel model and international telecommunication union (ITU) network model environments, we then evaluate the performance of edge users who belong to the lower 5% in terms of spectral efficiency. It is finally shown that throughput of the proposed CoMP system gets improved up to 2.5 times compared to that of the 3GPP LTE reference system.
