  • The Government of Mongolia approved establishment of the Mongolian LTER network in December 1997. In June 1998, a seminar was organized by the Mongolian Academy of Sciences to initiate the program. Dr. James Gosz of the US LTER program keynoted the seminar. A Mongolian LTER Steering Committee was established to organize the network and to develop guidelines for its management. This Committee designated Hovsgol National Park in northern Mongolia as the first Mongolian LTER network site. Other potential sites are presently being considered. including study sites in steppe grassland and desert locations. The primary goals of the Mongolian LTER Network are to study human impacts on Mongolia's environment; with a focus on short-term impacts of nomadic grazing on terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems and long-term climate change impacts on more pristine environments in the protected areas. There are at least two additional goals: to provide information and advice on how best to protect Mongolia's pristine environments, and to train Mongolian students to work on environmental problems to encourage the growth of expertise for making sound environmental decisions.

  • Ubiquitous sensor network (USN) is composed of many sensor nodes which are one of the simplest form of embedded system. In developing the sensor network system, a debugging tool is necessary to test and verify the system. Recently, a so-called packet analyzer has been developed for this purpose, and it supports IEEE 802.15.4 which is considered as the standard for the sensor network protocols. The major function of the packet analyzer is to take RF packets from sensor nodes and show the structure and the data of the packets graphically to the user. However, the conventional packet analyzers do not support remote control because they require a USB interface along with a personal computer. To make it available for remote control, we propose a new packet analyzer based on a server-client scheme in which a server program is implemented on embedded Linux and a client program is implemented on Windows for convenient use.

  • The Gwangju Daein Art Market, once declared as a declined market, was regarded as a success after an inflow of artists. However, the number of resident artists decreased from 100 at the end of 2015 to 39, to 9 in 2018, and to 6 in 2021. The project site showed signs of decline toward the completion of the project, leading to a Longitudinal study on the project's sustainability. The purpose of this study is to investigate the causes of outflow of artists and the network characteristics of the remaining artists from a sustainability perspective and thereby draw policy implications. As an analysis method, in-depth interviews and surveys were conducted. After that, we checked the remaining artists in 2018 and 2021 and identified the network characteristics. Based on the interview results, the causes of outflow were classified into programmatic, physical, and other factors. The results of a comparison showed that the levels of understanding, satisfaction, and frequency of exchange decreased. The study also provides policy implications. First, a sustainable, long-term program for the artists must involve the improvement of physical space. Second, participation in the market should be encouraged by working with artists on program composition or business progress. Third, programs for supporting exchange among artists should be further strengthened.

  • Vehicle load information is an important role in operating and ensuring the structural health of cable-stayed bridges. In this regard, an efficient and economic method is proposed for vehicle load detection based on the observed cable tension and vehicle position using a graph neural network (GNN). Datasets are first generated using the practical advanced analysis program (PAAP), a robust program for modeling and considering both geometric and material nonlinearities of bridge structures subjected to vehicle load with low computational costs. With the superiority of GNN, the proposed model is demonstrated to precisely capture complex nonlinear correlations between the input features and vehicle load in the output. Four popular machine learning methods including artificial neural network (ANN), decision tree (DT), random forest (RF), and support vector machines (SVM) are refereed in a comparison. A case study of a cable-stayed bridge with the typical truck is considered to evaluate the model's performance. The results demonstrate that the GNN-based model provides high accuracy and efficiency in prediction with satisfactory correlation coefficients, efficient determination values, and very small errors; and is a novel approach for vehicle load detection with the input data of the existing monitoring system.

  • Korean Land Spatialization Program (KLSP) is an R&D program of the National GIS Project for developing ubiquitous GIS technologies under the control of the M inistry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs (M LTM). The first program of the KLSP, which lasts from 2006 to 2012, initiated with $132 million of national funds and $42 million of private matching funds. Aiming to develop the 'Innovation of GIS technology for ubiquitous Korean land', the KLSP consists of five core research projects and one research coordination project to practically utilize and commercialize the results of core research projects. The Korean Land Spatialization Group (KLSG) is planning the KLSP Test-Bed for testing, integrating, and exhibiting the KLSP's outcomes. About 40% of the outcomes are related products to geo-sensor and wireless sensor network (W SN). Thus, interoperable, scalable and web accessible frameworks like an OGC SWE (Open Geospatial Consortium Sensor Web Enablement) are mandatory because some of the products must be connected to each other in a KLSG Test-Bed. The main objective of this paper is to introduce the KLSP Test-Bed and the SWE SOS (Sensor Observation Service) prototype, which is developed for interoperable geo-sensor networks of the KLSP.
