  • Optical burst switching (OBS) overcomes the inefficient resource usage of optical circuit switching and minimizes the optical buffering requirement of optical packet switching. General switch management protocol (GSMP) is an open interface between a label switch and a controller, and it provides connection, configuration, performance, event management and synchronization. GSMP open interface in the OBS network allows the implementation of OBS switch to be simple by separating the data forward plane from the control plane. We defined managed objects to support connection, configuration, performance, and fault management for the management of OBS network in the GSMP open interface. We proposed the network management model, in which the above managed objects are distributed in a controller and an OBS switch according to network management functions. We verified the possibility of connection management using distributed network management model in the GSMP open interface of OBS network by implementing GSMP and network management functions with managed objects of OBS.

  • Realization of the economical, reliable, and efficient ATM interface block becomes an important key to development of the ATM switching system when we consider new issues raised recently. In this paper, we summarize requirements for the ATM interface block and present the UNI (User Network Interface)/NNI (Network Node Interface) architecture to meet these requirements. We also evaluate the performance of the multiplexer adopting the various multiplexing schemes and service disciplines. For ATM UNI/NNI interface technologies, we have developed a new policing device using the priority encoding scheme. It can reduce the decision time for policing significantly. We have also designed a new spacer that can space out the clumped cell stream almost perfectly. This algorithm guarantees more than 99 % conformance to the negotiated peak cell rate. Finally, we propose the interface architecture for accommodation of the ABR (Available Bit Rate) transfer capability. The proposed structure that performs virtual source and virtual destination functions as well as a switch algorithm can efficiently accommodate the ABR service.

  • An end-to-end connect ion between customers on a network such as the PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network) requires a number of internal connection ammong pieces of transmission, switching and signaling equipment. New switching, transmission, and station systems, as well as new features for existing systems, are continually being developed. and the complexities are such that ensuring compatibility of signaling arrange.ent is a major concern. In this paper, we propose that new signal interface using features of SPC(Stored Program Control) and digital transmission has to be introduced into the domestic telecommunications network in the near future.

  • One of the important operational requirements for mission critical Ethernet networked system is having the fault tolerant capability. Such capability can be obtained by equipping multiport Network Interface Card (NIC) in each node in the system. Conventional NIC uses two or more Media Access Controls (MACs) and a co-processor for the MAC switching whenever an active port fails. Since firmware is needed for the co-processor, longer fail-over switching and degraded throughput can be generally expected. Furthermore the system upgrading requiring the firmware revision in each tactical node demands high cost. In this paper we propose a novel single MAC based NIC that does not use a co-processor, but just use general discrete building blocks such as MAC chip and switching chip, which results in better performances than conventional method. Experimental results validate our scheme.

  • Recently the tendency of the network system development rapidly progresses toward ISDN that intergrates all presetn-day communication networks and services into a single, universal network set up on the basis of the exisiting telephone network. For this reason many countries pay worldwide attention to the researches about ISDN, especially to the researches about the exchange and the ISDN user-network interface which is one of the most important parts of network system. This paper is the first part of the two-par papers describing the ISDN user-network interface. in this paper, after surveying the architecture of ISDN exchange recommended by CCITT, the general architecture of the ISDN exchage is proposed, Based on this architecture, the switching emulator is implemented, and the necessary conditions of the ISDN exchage(LAPO, CCP etc) are also studied.

  • In the realization of interface between subscriber and network, D-channel may deteriorate the performance of switching system in handling subscriber. Thus, D-channel must be designd in a way to interface efficiently with the system while maintaining exciting performance. This objective can be obtained by through consideration of the structure of the system. This paper shows the method to design D-channel, which has significant relation with the structure of the system whenrealizing the interface between subscriber and network, in adding ISDN function. The goal of performance is also proposed.

  • The ability to rapidly create and deploy new and novel services in response to market demands will be the key factor in determining the success of the future service provider. This goal may be approached from different directions. One of them is an open interface making the functionalities of a network element programmable and usable by outside entities. In this paper, we describe several aspects of this new, hot technical area and introduce related standard activities. In addition, we present a new switching system called MSMP (Multi-Service Multi-Plug-In), which is based on the open programmable interface concept, and describe its architecture and main functionalities of its components.

  • We present a performance evaluation model of cell reassembly mechanism in an ATM switching system. An ATM switching system may be designed so that communications between processors of its control part can be performed via its switching network rather than a separate inter-processor communications network. In such a system, there should be interface to convert inter-processor communication traffic from message format to cell format and vice versa, that is, mechanisms to perform the segmentation and reassembly sublayer. In this paper, we employ a continuous-time Markov chain for the performance evaluation model of cell reassembly mechanism with individual buffering, judicially defining the states of the mechanism. Performance measures such as message loss probability and average reassembly delay are obtained in closed forms. Some numerical illustrations are given for the performance analysis and dimensioning of the cell reassembly mechanism.

  • The addition of ISDN function in an exiting electronic switching system results in structural changes in the user-network interfaces module. The changes may affect the performance of the system. Thus it is one of significant design consigerations not to cause the performance degradation of the system. In order to estimate the prospective performance of the interface module for the ISDN function to be implementation on TDX-IB switching system, the effect of the ISDN user-network interface on the system performance is analyzed to the satisifcation of the goal using an analytical method. And the performance of the proposal system is also analyzed by the measurement using ISDN call simulations, followed by the comparision with the existing system.

  • This paper reviews the existing research activities on signaling and control procedures for IP over optical networks. We focus on the IP-centric signaling and control architecture based on the generalized multi-protocol label switching (GMPLS) protocol and analyze various scenarios and technical issues for deploying the IP over an optical network. We analyze the signaling and operations and administration and maintenance requirements for integrating an IP network and an optical network in order to cope with the high bandwidth and poor resource granularity of the optical network, including the optical cross-connect system. On the basis of network architecture and a reference configuration model, we investigate the GMPLS-based control architecture and interconnection model appropriate for controlling IP bandwidth and optical lambda resources. The signaling and control procedure based on GMPLS on optical user-network interface and network-network interface are comparatively investigated to provide the optical lightpath. We also study protection and restoration procedures to protect link failure when it applies to generalized MPLS signaling.
