Discovery of and Recovery from Failure in a Costal Marine USN Service

  • In a marine ubiquitous sensor network (USN) system using expensive sensors in the harsh ocean environment, it is very important to discover failures and devise recovery techniques to deal with such failures. Therefore, in order to perform failure modeling, this study analyzes the USN-based real-time water quality monitoring service of the Gaduri Aqua Farms at Songdo Island of Yeosu, South Korea and devises methods of discovery and recovery of failure by classifying the types of failure into system element failure, communication failure, and data failure. In particular, to solve problems from the perspective of data, this study defines data integrity and data consistency for use in identifying data failure. This study, by identifying the exact type of failure through analysis of the cause of failure, proposes criteria for performing relevant recovery. In addition, the experiments have been made to suggest the duration as to how long the data should be stored in the gateway when such a data failure occurs.

Autonomous smart sensor nodes for global and local damage detection of prestressed concrete bridges based on accelerations and impedance measurements

  • This study presents the design of autonomous smart sensor nodes for damage monitoring of tendons and girders in prestressed concrete (PSC) bridges. To achieve the objective, the following approaches are implemented. Firstly, acceleration-based and impedance-based smart sensor nodes are designed for global and local structural health monitoring (SHM). Secondly, global and local SHM methods which are suitable for damage monitoring of tendons and girders in PSC bridges are selected to alarm damage occurrence, to locate damage and to estimate severity of damage. Thirdly, an autonomous SHM scheme is designed for PSC bridges by implementing the selected SHM methods. Operation logics of the SHM methods are programmed based on the concept of the decentralized sensor network. Finally, the performance of the proposed system is experimentally evaluated for a lab-scaled PSC girder model for which a set of damage scenarios are experimentally monitored by the developed smart sensor nodes.

  • 본 논문에서는 한국과 일본에 위치한 여러 연구기관들 사이에서 수행된 온라인 네트워크 유사동적 실험 결과에 대해 나타내었다.예제 구조물로는 4경간 연속의 면진 교량을 이용하였다. 실험 장비를 보유하고 있는 두 연구기관에서 면진 장치의 비선형 거동에 대한 실험을 수행하고 각 실험 결과를 조합하여 전체 구조의 동적 해석을 수행하였다. 본 논문에서는 먼저 인터넷을 이용한 두 가지 데이터 전송기법을 이용하여 두 기법의 효율성을 비교, 분석하였다. 또한 최근 국내에 위치한 두 연구기관 사이에서 수행된 실험 결과에 대해 논의하였다. 본 연구에서는 상대 연구기관의 실험 상황 및 수행된 실험 결과의 효율적인 모니터링을 위하여 웹 기반의 자바 모니터링 시스템을 개발하였다. 마지막으로 유선과 무선 인터넷을 이용한 온라인 실험 기법에 대하여 나타내었다. 그 결과, 온라인 네트워크 실험에 소요된 실험 시간은 데이터 전송 기법과 실험장비에 따라 매 시간 단계의 데이터 전송에 0.2-15초, 각 연구기관의 유사동적 실험에 1-10초의 시간이 소요되어 매우 큰 폭으로 변화함을 알 수 있었다. 또한 무선 인터넷을 이용한 온라인 실험의 경우, 뛰어난 이동성과 인터넷 보안성 등과 같은 여러 가지 장점을 가지고 있음을 알 수 있었다.

  • Wireless sensor network technology is an emerging technology consisting of small, low power, and low cost devices that integrate limited computation, sensing, and radio communication capabilities. An ad-hoc home network system based embedded system for home environment monitoring was fabricated and tested. The wireless sensor node consists of a MCU, RF transceiver and sensors (temperature, humidity and light). Wireless sensor nodes run application software for data sampling and wireless communication, that was developed using 'nesC language' which runs on TinyOS. In our tests, acquired sensors data were monitored on 6.4" TFT-LCD of base-station through IEEE802.15.4 standard wireless communication. Also, the sensor data can be monitored by client user at the terminal PC to monitor environmental status of home in real time.

  • This paper introduces the key features of NCS (Network based Control System), which is quite a new concept in the industrial automation market. Two control systems "DCS" and "PLC" have been recognized as control systems used for process and factory automation during the past decades. However, the market requires more complex functionality, such as monitoring and operation, alarm handling and notification from remote locations using the Web or e-mail. Besides enhancing functionality, interoperability between each device and system is highly required since network and engineering tools provided by many vendors do not cooperate with each others, so that lots of conversion, reconfiguration and reprogramming are required when expanding systems. NCS can meet this requirement, installing leading-edged IT technology using international standards for network and engineering environment. NCS, which is a harmony of web functionality, networkability and a reliable control function, enables information integration and responding to the market's requirements with agility and high reliability.

A Development of Distance Measurement Scheme for Localization System in Wireless Personal Area Network

  • As the development of the computer and communication technologies, the ubiquitous society can be realized to the world early in the future. Thus, the localization system in Wireless Personal Area Network (WPAN) is required for many users of ubiquitous society to provide the ubiquitous computing based applications in respective of anytime and anywhere. In this paper, we propose the distance measurement scheme that is based on the distance measurement using RSSI (Received Signal Strength Indicator) of sensor module considering of two distance conditions for the localization system using Zigbee in WPAN. Also, the localization errors of the proposed scheme are analyzed in the three scenarios that the mobile module tracks in the in $6m{\times}6m$ scaled experimentation area. In addition to this, the monitoring subsystem is developed using GUI (Graphical User Interface) in order to monitor the location of the moving objects accurately and user-friendly.

  • In this paper ubiquitous health care system that can monitor health condition was implemented through measuring the sensor that is installed in vehicles. Implemented system consists of various wireless sensors and DB server, transmitting information that is sensed in real-time. In addition, through the sensed data based algorithm, the system which couples Web-based JSP program with Flash GUI, providing information as well as emergency service was established.

  • An intelligent home network system using low-power and low-cost sensor nodes was designed and implemented. In Intelligent Home Network System, active home appliances control is composed of RSSI (Received Signal Strength Indicator) based user indoor location tracking, dynamic multi-hop routing, and learning integration remote-control. Through the remote-control learning, home appliances can be controlled in wireless network environment. User location information for intelligent service is calculated using RSSI based Triangle measurement method, and then the received location information is passed to Smoothing Algorithm to reduce error rate. In order to service Intelligent Home Network, moreover, the sensor node is designed to be held by user. The gathered user data is transmitted through dynamic multi-hop routing to server, and real-time user location & environment information are displayed on monitoring program.

  • Wireless sensor networks consist of small, autonomous devices with wireless networking capabilities. In order to further increase the applicability in real world applications, minimizing energy consumption is one of the most critical issues. Therefore, accurate energy model is required for the evaluation of wireless sensor networks. In this paper we analyze the power consumption for wireless sensor networks. To develop the power consumption model, we have measured the power characteristics of commercial Kmote node based on TelosB platforms running TinyOS. Based on our model, the estimated lifetime of a battery powered sensor node can use about 6.9 months for application of human detection using PIR sensors. This result indicates that sensor nodes can be used in a monitoring system for elderly living alone.

  • An advanced and proactive response mechanism against diverse attacks on All-IP network should be proposed for enhancing its security and reliability on open network. There are two main research works related to this study. First one is the SPIE system with hash function on Bloom filter and second one is the Sinkhole routing mechanism using BGP protocol for verifying its transmission path. Therefore, advanced traceback and network management mechanism also should be necessary on All-IP network environments against DDoS attacks. In this study, we studied and proposed a new IP traceback mechanism on All-IP network environments based on existing SPIE and Sinkhole routing model when diverse DDoS attacks would be happen. Proposed mechanism has a Manager module for controlling the regional router with using packet monitoring and filtering mechanism to trace and find the attack packet's real transmission path. Proposed mechanism uses simplified and optimized memory for storing and memorizing the packet's hash value on bloom filter, with which we can find and determine the attacker's real location on open network. Additionally, proposed mechanism provides advanced packet aggregation and monitoring/control module based on existing Sinkhole routing method. Therefore, we can provide an optimized one in All-IP network by combining the strength on existing two mechanisms. And the traceback performance also can be enhanced compared with previously suggested mechanism.
