Mechanisms of Pretilt Angle Generation on the New Photo-crosslinkable Polymers (새로운 광중합 가능한 폴리머의 프리틸트각 발생의 메카니즘)

  • The mechanisms of pretilt angle generation for a nematic liquid cystal (NLC) using a photodimerization method with obliquely polarized UV exposure on the various new photo-crosslinkable polymer were studied. A good thermal stability of all the photo-crosslinkable polymers was obtained by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) measurement until 450$\^{C}$. High pretilt angle of the NLC was observed by polarized UV exposure on the three kinds of the photo-crosslinkable polymers containing biphenyl(BP), decyl(de), and cholesteryl(chol) group, respectively. However, the low pretilt angle of the NLC was measured by obliquely polarized UV exposure on the two kinds of the photo-crosslinkable polymers containing fluorine and chalcone group. Consequently, the high NLC angle generated is attributable to the biphenyl and alkyl moieties, and photo-dimerized chalcone group of the photopolymer.

Electro-Optical Characteristics of Plastic STN Cell on the Polyimide Surface (폴리이미드 표면을 이용한 플라스틱 STN 셀의 전기 광학 특성)

  • We investigated the electro-optical (EO) performances of the super twisted nematic liquid crystal display (STN-LCD) on the polyimide (PI) surface using polymer film. Monodomain alignment of the plastic STN-LCD can be observed. A stable voltage-transmittance (V-T) curve of the plastic STN-LCD was observed on the polyimide (PI) surfaces using polymer film. Also, a faster response time for the plastic STN-LCD on the polyimide (PI) surfaces using polymer film can be achieved. Therefore, the EO performances of the plastic STN-LCD on the polyimide (PI) surfaces using polymer film is almost the same as that of the glass STN-LCD on a polyimide (PI) surface.

  • In this paper, we investigated the monodomain alignment of nematic liquid crystal(NLC) in the cell fabricated by transcription alignment method on polyimide(PI) surface with side chain. The LC alignment produced by the transcription alignment method is attributed to a memory effect of the NLC on PI surfaces. We observed that the pretilt angle of NLC is generated about $3.7^{\circ}$ with transcription alignment on PI surface. Also, we obtained the good electro-optical(EO) performance of twisted nematic(TN)-liquid crystal display(LCD) by transcription alignment method on PI surface.

Monodomain alignment of the plastic STN-LCD can be observed. A faster response time for the photoaligned plastic STN-LCD on the polyimide(PI) surfaces can be achieved than rubbingaligned plastic STN-LCD.

The NLC pretilt angles generated are about $18^{\circ}$ by the rubbing alignment method on thin plastic substrates. However, the pretilt angle are at about $13^{\circ}$ lower on the glass substrate than on thin plastic substrate. Monodomain alignment of the plastic STN-LCD can be observed. A stable voltage-transmittance(V-T) curve of the plastic STN-LCD was observed on the polyimide(PI) surfaces using polymer film. Also, a faster response time for the plastic STN-LCD on the polyimide(PI) surfaces using polymer film can be achieved.

  • We have studied contrast ratio of a homogeneously aligned nematic liquid crystal (LC) display as a function of the angle between the polarizer axis and LC director. The results show that a cell configuration in which a polarizer axis facing a light source coincides with a short LC axis has a better process margin in terms of high contrast ratio than that of the cell coinciding with a long LC axis.

  • We proposed viewing angle switchable liquid crystal display(LCD) associated with fringe-field switching (FFS) mode with high aperture ratio characteristic. In the device, single pixel is separated into two regions, named as main pixel for displaying images and sub pixel for viewing angle control. In sub pixel region, add the common electrode on the top substrate and the initial alignment of liquid crystal is Hybrid Alignment Nematic (HAN) state. In conclusion, we suggested that the device has high aperture ratio characteristic because the LC directors are rotated in which viewing angle control region are generated fringe electric field.

Observation of SWCNT Stretching in homogeneously aligned nematic liquid Crystal medium (수평 배향된 양의 액정 내에서의 단일벽 탄소 나노튜브 Stretching 관찰)

  • In this paper, we observed stretching of single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) aggregates driven by the in-plane field in a homogeneously aligned nematic liquid crystal (LC) medium. Aggregates of SWCNTs started to stretch above the 0.5 V/${\mu}m$ and stretched up to $1.83\;{\mu}m$ from original size with $0.74\;{\mu}m$ at 3.5 V/${\mu}m$.

  • Photoresponsive side chain copolymer and homopolymer containing an aminonitroazobenzene were synthesized for studying photoisomerization behavior and photo-induced anisotropy. Trans-to-cis photoisomerization was observed under the exposure of a circularly polarized visible light with UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy. Reorientation of polar azobenzene molecules induced optical anisotropy under a linearly polarized light at 532nm. Polarized absorption spectroscopy was employed to investigate the anisotropy of the polymer film during irradiationg of the excitation light. Layers of two photosensitive polymers were used for aligning liquid crystal(LC) molecules instead of one of the rubbed polyimide layers in the conventional twisted nematic cell. For producing homogeneous alignment of a nematic LC molecule, a linearly polarized light was exposed to the films of two polymers. The stability of the LC alignment upon the linearly polarized light exposure was also studied.

  • We have investigated the generation of pretilt angle for a nematic liquid crystal (NLC) alignment with rubbing alignment method on polyimide surfaces using thin plastic substrates. It was found that monodomain alignment of LNC is obtained with rubbing alignment method on polyimide surfaces using thin plastic substrates. The generated NLC pretilt angles are about $3^{\circ}$ by the rubbing alignment method on thin plastic substrates, However, the pretilt angle measured at about $1.7^{\circ}$ lower on the glass substrate than by thin plastic substrate. It is considered that this alignment may be attributed to roughness of micro groove substrate. The tilt angle increases with increasing baking temperature for making polyimide layer using glass substrate. It was concluded that pretilt angle in the polyimide surface is attributable to the increasing of imide rato.
