  • Purpose: This study aimed to identify the reciprocal relationship between parenting attitudes (positive and negative) and adolescent emotional problems as indicated by aggression, social withdrawal, and depression. Methods: This study analyzed longitudinal data from 2,325 parents and their children from the Korea Children and Youth Panel Survey 2018 at three time points over a three-year period (the first to third grade of middle school). Autoregressive cross-lagged modeling was conducted using AMOS 26.0. Results: The results indicated that both parenting attitudes and adolescents' emotional problems were relatively stable over time. In other words, the parenting attitude at a previous point affects the parenting attitude at a later point, and the emotional problem at the previous point continues to affect the emotional problem at the later point. There were no significant cross-lagged effects from both positive and negative parenting attitudes to adolescents' emotional problems. In contrast, adolescents' emotional problems at previous time points positively predicted negative parenting attitudes at later time points. In other words, if there were many emotional problems of aggression, social withdrawal, and depression in adolescents at a previous time, negative parenting attitudes such as rejection, force, and inconsistency at a later time increased. Conclusion: This study can reflect the characteristics of the development of independence in adolescence. Parents should deal with their children's emotional problems based on their understanding of the developmental characteristics of adolescence, and this study provides a strategy for parents to establish appropriate parenting attitudes for adolescents with emotional problems.

  • This study examines the structural relationship between parents' positive and negative parenting attitudes, life satisfaction, and academic helplessness. To this end, 2,595 middle school students (1,405 boys and 1,185 girls) were used among the KCYPS 2018 panel materials. The model was validated using a structural equation model, and the verification of the mediated effects of life satisfaction was significant with bootstraps. The results of the study are as follows. First, the positive and negative parenting attitudes of parents have a significant impact on life satisfaction. These results can be interpreted as having an impact on the lives of adolescent children, depending on their parenting attitudes. Second, the positive and negative parenting attitudes of parents have a significant impact on academic helplessness. These results can be interpreted as having an effect on the academic performance of adolescent children depending on their parenting attitudes. Third, satisfaction in life has a significant adverse effect on academic helplessness. These results can be interpreted as having a positive impact on studies according to the satisfaction level of youth's life, and having a negative impact on studies if life satisfaction is high and life satisfaction is low. Fourth, the satisfaction of life is mediated between parents' positive and negative parenting attitudes and academic helplessness. Through this study, it is meaningful in that it allows parents to understand the process of life satisfaction affecting their academic helplessness according to their parenting attitudes.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the longitudinal causal relationships between maternal parenting stress and parenting attitudes. Relevant data from mothers with infants aged from 2 to 4 years of age was gathered from the Panel Study of Korean Children were analyzed by means of Latent Growth Modeling. The findings are as follows, First, levels of parenting stress increased whereas the extent of positive parenting attitudes decreased as children grow older. Second, the initial value of parenting stress was observed to have a negative effect on the initial value of positive parenting attitudes. Third, those mothers who generally have faster speeds of increasing parenting stress tend to have faster speeds of decreases in positive parenting attitudes. What this study clearly revealed is that the positive parenting attitudes of mothers with infants tend to improve when the mothers try to efficiently deal with their parenting stress by either acquiring appropriate parenting knowledge or receiving support from their families and communities.

  • This study examines the structural relationship between parents' positive parenting attitudes, negative parenting attitudes, emotional problems, and academic helplessness. To this end, the data of 2,590 first-year middle school students in the Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey 2018 were used to understand the structural relationship between variables. For this study, the correlation between variables was examined with SPSS 21.0, and the structural relationship between variables was identified with AMOS 21.0. The research results are as follows. First, it was found that the positive parenting attitude and negative parenting attitude of parents had a significant effect on academic helplessness. Second, parents' positive and negative parenting attitudes had a significant effect on emotional problems. Third, emotional problems had a significant positive effect on academic ability. Fourth, emotional problems were partially mediated between parents' positive parenting attitudes, negative parenting attitudes, and academic helplessness. In other words, the emotions of adolescents affected by their parents' parenting attitudes affect their learning. Through this study, it is meaningful to confirm that emotional problems can be treated as factors that influence studies, not simply limited to factors influenced by other factors.

  • This study aims to examine the mutual influences of negative parenting attitudes, self-esteem, and life satisfaction perceived by adolescent children through longitudinal perspective. Data from the first to third years of the panel of the first year middle school students were used among the 2018 data of the Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey (KCYPS) of the Korea Youth Policy Institute. The longitudinal correlation was analyzed by applying the autoregressive cross-lagged model which can determine the direction of longitudinal causality between variables. As a result of the analysis, it was found that the negative parenting attitudes, self-esteem, and life satisfaction perceived by adolescents had a positive effect on the negative parenting attitude perception, self-esteem, and life satisfaction at later times, respectively. In addition, the higher the negative parenting attitude at the previous point was, the lower the self-esteem or life satisfaction afterward. The higher the life satisfaction, the lower the negative parenting attitude of the parents, and the higher the self-esteem. Recognition of negative parenting attitudes of parents lowered the self-esteem of adolescents, whereas the cross-delay coefficient from self-esteem to negative parenting attitude perception was not significant. Through these results, the longitudinal relationship between negative parenting attitude perception of adolescence, self-esteem, and life satisfaction was confirmed and efforts to form positive self-esteem and improve life satisfaction were discussed.

On the contrary, higher levels of depression and aggression were detected among adolescents who perceived parenting attitude as more intrusiveness. The more the inconsistent parenting practices perceived by adolescents, the higher the degree of depression. Second, a higher level of life satisfaction was found among adolescent who were more likely to perceive positive parenting attitudes including monitoring, affection and reasoning. However, there was no significant correlation between negative parenting behavior and life satisfaction. Fourth, according to the analysis on the effects of parenting attitudes and emotional problems on life satisfaction, affection parenting of all positive parenting styles and depression among emotional problems had an impact on life satisfaction. • Objectives: Adolescent suicide, a major cause of adolescent death, is affected by various factors, including attitudes toward suicide. This study investigated the association between parenting style and adolescents' attitudes toward suicide and the mediating role of attitude toward suicide between parenting style and suicidal ideation. Methods: We surveyed 1,071 adolescents from eight middle schools in Incheon, Korea. The survey included sociodemographic information, attitudes toward suicide, perception of parenting style, depression severity, and suicidality. Results: Students in the authoritarian parenting group had a more permissive attitude toward suicide compared with the democratic and permissive parenting groups. These students considered that suicide is justified in certain situations and that choosing suicide is an individual's right. They also had a negative attitude toward talking about suicide or intervening in others' suicide. This association remained statistically significant after adjusting for the impact of confounding factors that could affect attitudes toward suicide, except for suicidal processes and preparedness to prevent suicide. In the mediation analysis, we observed that some factors of the attitudes toward suicide mediated between authoritarian parenting attitudes and suicidal ideation, namely, suicide as a right, preventability, suicide as normal/common, preparedness to prevent suicide, and resignation. Conclusion: This study revealed the significant impact of parenting style on children's attitudes toward suicide. Educating parents about the appropriate parenting attitudes-sympathetic and rational-can help prevent youth suicide.
