Authors observed an outbreak of porcine pleuropneumonia at a piggery in Gyeongbug, Korea, which were diagnosed on the ground of clinical and pathological findings with the following results. 1. One hundred and forty weanlings out of 200 ones died suddenly without noticiable signs during the period of 15 days. All of the dead pigs showed formy, blood-tinged discharge from the nose and mouth. 2. Main clinical findings observed from 60 alive pigs from group consisted of fever, cyanosis severe degree of dyspnea and pleuritic friction rub. 3. On hematological observation for typical 5 cases leukocytes showed marked degenerative left shift with leukopenia (10500-13070/cmm), neutropenia (7-13%) and increase in the number of band neutrophils (6-27%). 4. The most prominent and constant pathological changes observed at necropsy for dead or alive pigs consisted of fibrinous pleurisy with partial adhesion, overlying of the pulmonary surface with fibrinous menbrane and necrotic pneumonic lesions with marked edema and congestion of lung parenchyma. 5. From these results the outbreak was considered to be typical porcine pleuropneumonia, although no bacteriological isolation was attempted.
The etiologic agents of mucormycosis are several nonpathogenic fungi of the order Mucorales and are ubiquitous. A total of 82 chickens were infected with the disease and developed anorexia, diarrhea, malnutrition, dyspnea, and paralysis in a chicken farm, Sokcho, Kwangwon. At necropsy there were multiple nodular lesions and hemorrhages in livers, spleens, kidneys, gastrointestinal track, and respiratory system. On histopathological examination it was found that the nodular lesions were consisted of granoulomatous inflammation accompanying characteristic hyphae ($4{\sim}24{\mu}$ wide) of the fungi.
A survey on the prevalence of internal parasites in the laboratory rats in the Chonnam and Kyunggi areas was carried out. A total of 208 rats was selected for necropsy and the parasites were collected from the organs and the fecal samples. The infection rate of the internal parasites was high as 63.9% and eight species of parasites were identified. Among the species identified A tetraptera(21.6%) and H diminuta(20.7%) appeared with relatively higher infection rates than any other species identified. A significant difference in numbers of parasites was recognized between the regions as 8 species in Chonnam and 4 species in Kyunggi. The laboratory rats reared in stainless steel cage showed the higher infection rate than those in polycarbonate cage, with some exception in H spumosa and H nana. In this survey T crassicauda was firstly in the laboratory rats in Korea.
A totoal of 219 pigs, 109 necropsy-pigs at the diagnostic laboratory of Cheju National University and 110 slaughter-pigs in Cheju, were evaluated for the prevalence of tissue antigen and serum antibody for spontaneus porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome(PRRS). Tissues from 219 pigs examined for PRRS viral antigen by immmunohistochemistry included lung(cranio-ventral lobes and dorso-caudal lobes), tonsil, tracheobronchial lymph node, mesenteric lymph node, heart, kidney, liver, spleen, testis, ovary, brain, and spinal cord. Sera from 180 pigs were tested for the presence of antibody to PRRS virus by the indirect fluorescent antibody assay (IFA). In the examination of serum antibody and tissue antigen for PRRS virus, serum antibody titers were considered as positive in 10%(18/180) of animals tested and PRRS viral antigen was detected in tissues of 4%(9/219) of the pigs. PRRS virus tissue antigen was most commonly detected by immunohistochemistry in the cranio-ventral lobe and tonsil. We also confirmed the distribution of tissue antigen and prevalence of serum antibody to PRRS virus in Cheju. The detection of viral antigen by immunohistochemistry in tonsils and cranio-ventral lobes proved to be a very useful method for PRRS diagnosis.
A 7-year-old, female snow goose (Anser caerulescens hyperboreus) with history of decreased activity for 2 month died in Daejeon Zoo Land in September 2006. At necropsy, granulomatous pneumonia and hepatomegaly with multiple cysts were observed. Small masses were found in the spleen. Microscopically, fibrinous pneumonia distributed in most of the lung lobe with pulmonary edema and congestion. Especially, granulomatous inflammation with numerous multinucleated giant cells was observed around the dilated bronchi. To confirm the diagnosis, acid-fast (Ziehl-Neelsen method) and periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) staining was performed. Acid-fast staining showed red bacterial colony indicating tuberculosis. PAS staining was also positive enough to diagnose aspergillus spp. co-infection that was an opportunistic fungi occurring in immuno-compromised animals. Based on the above results, we confirmed that the case submitted was diagnosed as avian tuberculosis.
Pericardial mesothelioma is a rare neoplasm in dogs. This report describes a case of pericardial mesothelioma in a 13-year-old Shih Tzu that presented with a clinical history of dyspnea. Hemorrhagic pericardial effusion and chylous pleural effusion with reactive mesothelial cells were identified by radiograph and cytology. Necropsy revealed multiple round nodules throughout the pericardium and regional lymph nodes in addition to chylothorax. Histopathology revealed invasive neoplasm on the pericardial surface with metastasis to the lymph nodes. The neoplastic cells were immunopositive to both cytokeratin and vimentin. Diagnosis of pericardial mesothelioma with regional lymph node metastasis was made.
Bovine abdominal fat necrosis (lipomatosis) is relatively common disorder in adult Korean indigenous cattle. Thirteen Korean indigenous cattle with bovine lipomatosis and five clinically healthy cattle were selected and serum biochemical profiles were analyzed. Serum free fatty acids level was significantly high, while total cholesterol, serum albumin and total calcium levels were significantly low in bovine lipomatosis group. In a case of necropsy, saponificated adipose masses surrounding colon was observed and hepatic fatty degeneration and fat deposition in the renal tubules were found in a histopathologic examination. These findings indicate that affected cattle have a predisposition to deposit more fat into adipose tissue than normal cattle. Such abnormalities might lead to the development of abdominal fat necrosis with fibroplasia and possibly compress the intestines and urinary organs.
Objectives : This research investigates the single oral dose toxicity of ACM in SD rats. Methods : ACMs were administered to female and male SD rats, as an oral dose of 5000 mg/kg. Animals were monitored for the mortality and changes in the body weight, clinical signs and gross observation during the 14 days after dosing, upon necropsy. Results : We could not find any mortality. Compared with the control group, significant weight change was not observed in the experimental group. First day after administration, compound-colored stool was observed in all rats. After the second day of administration, the more common symptoms were not observed. There were no gross abnormalities in all cases. [ED NOTE: highlight: given the context, this is very vague] Conclusions : The results obtained in this study suggest that the approximate lethal dose of ACM in both female and male rats were considered as over 5000 mg/kg.

The object of this study was to evaluate the single dose toxicity of Iijintanggami-bang (IJTGMB), a polyherbal formula have been traditionally used as prevention or treatment agent for various digestive disorders including reflux esophagitis, in male and female mice. Aqueous extracts of IJTGMB (Yield = 8.45%) was administered to female and male ICR mice as an oral dose of 2,000, 1,000 and 500 mg/kg (body weight) according to the recommendation of Korea Food and Drug Administration (KFDA) Guidelines. Animals were monitored for the mortality and changes in body weight, clinical signs and gross observation during 14 days after dosing, upon necropsy; organ weight and histopathology of 12 principal organs were examined. As results, we could not find any mortality, clinical signs, and changesin the body and organ weight except for soft feces restricted to IJTGMB 2,000 mg/kg treated two male mice (2/5; 40%) at 1 day after administration. In addition, no IJTGMB-treatment related abnormal gross findings and changes in histopathology of principle organs were detected except for some sporadic accidental findings. The results obtained in this study suggest that the 50% lethal dose and approximate lethal dose of IJTGMB aqueous extracts in both female and male mice were considered as over 2,000 mg/kg, the limited highest dosage recommended by KFDA Guidelines.
A 1-year and 8-month-old male, thoroughbred horse showed fever ($39.8^{\circ}C$), cardiac murmur, tachycardia up to 80 beats/min, anorexia, depression and lameness for about 2 months. The dead horse was referred to pathology laboratory at the College of Veterinary Medicine in Jeju National University. At necropsy, Severe protruding multiple rough cauliflower-like yellowish red nodules ranged $5{\sim}6{\times}2{\sim}3cm$ in size were attached on the mitral valve of the left heart. A yellowish red long stick-shaped thrombus $15{\times}3.5{\times}1.5cm$ in size was also present inside the right ventricle. Multifocal infarcts were scattered in the myocardium and renal cortex. Histopathologic examination revealed that morphologic diagnosis were vegetative endocarditis, thrombus in right ventricle, infarcts in myocardium and kidney, pulmonary congestion and edema, and splenic congestion. The isolated bacteria from vegetative lesions and thrombus were confirmed as Escherichia (E.) coli based on the bacterial culture and VITEK 2 system. Based on the gross and histopathologic features, and bacterial test, this case was diagnosed as vegetative endocarditis with thrombus formation associated by E. coli in a thoroughbred horse.
