  • Many researches have been done to define the physical parameters for the wave generation and transformation over a coastal region. However, most of these have been limited to the application of particular conditions, as they are generally too empirical. To yield more reasonable wave estimation using a spectral wave model, it is important to understand how they work for the wave estimation. This study involved a comprehensive sensitivity test against the spectral resolution and the physical source/sink terms of the spectral wave model using SWAN and TOMAWAC, which have the same physical background with several different empirical/theoretical formulations. The tests were conducted for the East Anglian coast, UK, which is characterized by a complex bathymetry due to several shoals and offshore sandbanks. For the quantitative and qualitative evaluation of the models' performance with different input conditions, the wave elements and spectrums predicted at representative sites the East Anglia coast were compared/analyzed. The spectral resolution had no significant effect on the model results, but the lowest resolution on the frequency and direction induced underestimations of the wave height and period. The bottom friction and depth-induced breaking terms produced relatively high variations in the wave prediction, depending on which formulation was applied. The terms for the quadruplet and whitecapping had little effect on the wave estimation, whereas the triads tended to predict shorter and higher waves by energy transferring to higher frequencies.

  • This paper aims at the elucidation of the characteristics of longshore current profile after wave breaking. Wave breakers are always accompanied by complex turbulent process, wave energy losess occur and the mean water level also varies due to the gradient of radiation stress. These with other factors result in the development of longshore currents. Longshore currents have relations to the alongshore sand transport and to the diffusion of contaminants in nearshore region, thus the understanding and elucidation of them are very important from the engineering point of view. Using the calculated results, the factors such as lateral mixing cofficients, bed shear stress. wave angle. wave steepness and bottom slope. which are influencing the longshore current profile. are examined. Also, by comparing the results of longshore currents with the experimental data obtained by other investigators, the procedure proposed in the present study is shown to be valid.

  • The trend of physical oceanography research in Korea till 1992 is briefly described. Research papers and activities are reviewed and classified according to the research field and geographic area. so this work ca be served as a reference in planning future researches and surveys. Most of the research areas are confined to the nearshore around the Korean Peninsula and the research field do not extend far beyond the classic subjects of physical properties of water masses and tides. etc. Future researches should thus be oriented to the basin-scale circulation aiming at the national oceanographic tasks such as the formation of the Tsushima Warm current, circulation in the Yellow-East china Seas, and three dimensional circulation of the East (Japan) Sea.

  • Numerical model introduced in this study combines wave refraction-diffraction, breaking, bottom friction, lateral mixing, and critical shear stress and three sub-models for simulating waves, currents, and bottom change were briefly discussed. Simulations of beach processes and harbor sedimentation were also described at the coast neighboring Bangpo Harbor, Anmyundo, Chungnam, where the area has suffered from accumulation of drifting sand in a small fishing harbor with a wide tidal range. We also made model test for the case of a narrow tidal range at Nakdong river's estuary area to understand the effect of water level variation on the littoral drift. Simulations are conducted in terms of incident wave direction and tidal level. Characteristics of wave transformation, nearshore current, sediment transport, and bottom change are shown and analyzed. We found from the simulation that the tidal level impact to the sediment transport is very important and we should apply the numerical model with different water level to analyze sediment transport mechanism correctly. Although the model study gave reasonable description of beach processes and harbor sedimentation mechanism, it is necessary to collect lots of field observation data, including waves, tides and bottom materials, etc. for better prediction.

  • The surfacial bottom sediments on the nearshore to infer continental shelf off the Taean Peninsular, west coast of Korea are dominantly medium-grained clastic sands. About 60% and 20% of these clastic sands are partly iron-stained quartz and completely iron-stained quartz, respectively. Characteristically glauconite grains are abundantly found in these clastic sands. The mineral compositions of clastic sandy sediments in the study area are very similar to those of East China continental shelf sediments. Accordingly, such iron-stained quartz grains, glauconite grains and associated textural characteristics seem to indicate that those sandy sediments are relict sediments related to past condition, i.e. Quaternary low stands of sea level.

  • This study is part of a project to develop and improve mooring systems for oceanographic use that include an electro-optical sensor, 1MHz Nortek Aquadopp Doppler Profiler and AIRMAR multipurpose Sensor. The adaption of Doppler current profilers to measure directional wave spectra has provided a new instrumentation approach to coastal and nearshore oceanographic studies. The HEIOB is developed are light weight and of a compact design, and can be easily installed in marine environment. Since there are no base station and gateways in marine environments, we selected CDMA and Orbcomm to send the data information. Therefore, the data can be sent by either e-mail service or Short Message Service (SMS). This paper will present some of scientific sensor results regarding real-time oceanographic and meteorological parameters such as wind spend, wind direction, wave direction, and etc. The modeling and test results highlight the engineering challenges associated with designing these systems for long lifetimes. It can also be used in future application to build wave observation buoy network in real-time using multiple ubiquitous buoys that share wave data and allow analysis of multipoint, multi-layer wave profiler.

  • Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs) are ubiquitous contaminants in coastal marine environment. PAHs enter estuarine and nearshore marine environment via several routes such as combustion of fossil fuels, domestic and industrial effluents and oil spills. In August of 1997, mussels(Mytilus edulis) were collected at 6 sites near Kori nuclear power plant in order to analyze the PAH content by HPLC with uv/vis detection. Unfortunately, I could not find any living oysters in which I firstly intended to measure the PAH content in the study area. NPTHL and ANCPL were the major dominant PAH compounds in mussels living in the intertidal zone of Kori, Korea, and DahA, BbF, BaP were the next dominant PAH group in mussels in the study area. The mean concentrations of 15 PAH in mussels ranged from 3.2 to 1,680 ppb(mean 105$\pm$60.5 ppb). Compared with other studies world over, the concentrations of carcinogenic PAHs were relatively low in mussels in the study area, even though total PAH content was rather high. According to N/P(Naphthalene/Phenanthrene) ratio(147) and the ratio of 2∼3 ring to 3∼5 ring PAHs(58∼90 %) in mussels in the study area, I expect that the major source of PAHs in this study area is rather fresh petroleum-derived. This study presents preliminary data for the PAH levels in mussels from the intertidal zone of Kori, and the data will hopefully be utilized for the assessment of oil pollution in the East Sea, Korea.

  • Ecklonia cava Kjellman is a common kelp found in shallow subtidal in warm-temperate waters in the northwest Pacific Ocean. This species has shown substantial morphological variation along with subsistence in different locations and local environments. We quantified the magnitude of morphological variation of E. cava from six populations along ~700 km of coastline from Jeju Island to Dokdo in Korea. In addition, we examined genetic distance among the populations using random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis. Most morphological characteristics investigated were significantly different among locations. Multivariate analyses indicated two phenetically distinct groups (nearshore, sheltered vs. offshore, exposed), indicating wave exposure with turbidity are presumably major factors for the separation. With RAPD data, results of Nei's diversity (H) and AMOVA showed considerable variations in within- and between-populations. Pairwise ${\Phi}_{ST}$ and $N_m$ values indicated moderate gene flow between the six locations. Results of Nei's analysis revealed three genetically distinct groups, not consistent with the morphological groupings, indicating that a time gap may exist between morphological and genetic variations. This study also suggests dispersal distance of this kelp may be longer than what is commonly thought and genetic similarity in the populations was largely reflected by the direction of ocean current rather than just geographical distance.

  • Korea has not any fixed station for Radio Navigation systems yet. In some part of the Korean Sea, however, Japanese stations can be utilized for the Radio Navigation. 3 Decca chains were proposed to install the Decca Navigation network for Korea. Only for the coverage area, 1 Decca chain is sufficient for the sea around Korea instead of 3 chains. At present, Omega system is the most recommendable for the positioning in the farther area. In nearshore area, Raydist or Decca Trisponder is is useful for obtaining the position with high accuracy.

In August of 1997, sediment and mussels (Mytilus edulis) were collected at 6 sites near Kori nuclear power plant in order to analyze the PAH content by HPLC with uv/vis detection. The concentrations of 15 PAH in sediment ranged from < 1 to 5,900 ppb ( mean 173.5$\pm$99.7 ppb), and in mussels, from < 0.5 to 4,125 ppb (mean 105$\pm$60.5 ppb). Compared with other studies world over, the concentrations of carcinogenic PAHs were relatively low in both sediment and mussels from the intertidal zone of Kori. This study presents preliminary data for the PAH levels in sediment and mussels from the intertidal zone of Kori, and the data will hopefully be utilized for the assessment of oil pollution in the Southeast East Sea, Korea (especially for the PAHs).
