The purpose of this research was to develop a the reflection technique with near infrared (NIR) radiation for estimating physico-chemical properties in compost. The composts (cattle, pig, chicken and waste composts) were air dried and then ground to pass through a 0.5 or 2mm sieve for the physico-chemical properties and spectroscopic determinations. The physico-chemical properties of compost were shown high values ; moisture(30-60%), T-N(0.8-2.9%), organic matter(29-89%), pH(5.89-9.60) K$_2$O(0.27-5.66%), P2O$\sub$5/(0.07-2.62%), CaO(0.03-4.80%), MgO(0.09-1.56%), NaCl(0.01-1.13%), EC(1.41-13.76dS/m). Generally, we should select a simple calibration and prediction method for determining physico-chemical properties in compost under similar accuracy and precision of prediction. It should be remembered that the NIRS approach will never replace the traditional methods. However, NIRS technique may be an effective method for rapid and nondestructive measurements of a large number of compost samples. Near infrared reflectance spectra of composts was obtained by Infra Alyzer 500 scanning spectrophotometer at 2-nm intervals from 1100 to 2500nm. Multiple linear regression(MLR) or partial least square regression (PLSR) was used to evaluate a NIRS method for the rapid and nondestructive determination of physico-chemical properties and humic acid contents in composts. The standard error of prediction(SEP) for finely sized sample(<0.5mm) and coarsely sized sample(<2mm) did not show much difference. The NIR instrument of filter type showed the same accuracy of the monochromator scanning type to estimate the compost properties. The results summarized that NIR spectroscopy can be used as a routine testing method to determine quantitatively the OM, moisture, T-N, color, pH, cation content in the compost samples nondestructively.
Recently we showed the prototype portable device for the determination of human skin moisture by using near infrared spectroscopy. In order to optimize the acquiring condition of NIR spectrum of skin and control the target information of water depending the site such as epidermis and dermis, skin depth profiling was investigated changing the distance between illuminations and receiving of radiation in the terminal of fiber probe. The colleted light information could be controlled by changing the distance of the fiber optic probes. It was confirmed that the longer distance we used, the deeper site from the skin surface we could get information from in this study. Four kinds of probes with distances such as 0.03 mm, 0.1 mm, 0.5 mm, and 1.0 mm were used. In addition, the gap size from 0.3 mm to 3.0 mm was studied to control the intensity of water absorbance effectively and to avoid saturation of water absorption. We also investigated the reference materials depending the reflectance ratio for water absorption not to be saturated because of the strong absorptivity of water. Furthermore, spectroscopic information regarding free water and bound water around 1850 nm was investigated by using the different distance of fiber optic probes. This study would be great help to control the spectroscopic information of water to be measured depending the site where water exists.
Comets, one of the least-altered leftovers from the nascent solar system, have probably preserved the primitive structure inside, whereas their surfaces become modified from the initial states after repetitive orbital revolutions around the Sun. Resurfacing makes the surface drier and more consolidated than the bulk nuclei, creating inert refractory dust layer ("dust mantle"). Near-infrared (NIR; 1.25-2.25 m) polarimetry is theoretically expected to maximize contrast of the porosity between inner fresh and evolved dust particles, by harboring more dust constituents in the single wavelength than the optical; thus, intensifies electromagnetic interaction in dust aggregates. Despite such an advantage, only a few studies have been made in this approach mainly due to the limited accessibility of available facilities. Herein, we present our new multi-band NIR polarimetric study of near-Earth object 252P/LINEAR over 12 days near perihelion, together with the results of optical (0.48-0.80m) imaging observations and backward dynamical simulation of the comet. Based on the results, we will characterize the dust properties of the comet and discuss the possible environmental (temperature and UV radiation) effects that could produce the observed phenomena.
Mixed heat transfer in an indirected NIR (Near Infrared Ray) dry chamber was investigated numerical analysis. It is Important that the miked heat transfer effects on double parameters which the Reynolds number and the position of emit lamp. Reynolds number are based on the outer diameter of the cylinder range from 103 to $30{\times}105$. Four difference heat transfer regimes of behavior are apparent: forced convection and radiation on the outer surface of the cylinder, pure conduction, pure natural convection and radiation between lamp surface and inner surface of the cylinder. The temperature and flow patterns are illustrated by iso-contour lines for the double parameters. Also presented are results on the convective heat transfer flux and the radiative heat transfer flux as increased with Reynolds number.

Massive stars, supernovae, and kilonovae are among the most luminous radiation sources in the universe. Observations usually show near- to mid-infrared (NIR-MIR, 1-5~micron) emission excess from H II regions around young massive star clusters (YMSCs) and anomalous dust extinction and polarization towards Type Ia supernova (SNe Ia). The popular explanation for such NIR-MIR excess and unusual dust properties is the predominance of small grains (size a<0.05micron) relative to large grains (a>0.1micron) in the local environment of these strong radiation sources. The question of why small grains are predominant in these environments remains a mystery. Here we report a new mechanism of dust destruction based on centrifugal stress within extremely fast rotating grains spun-up by radiative torques, namely the RAdiative Torque Disruption (RATD) mechanism, which can resolve this question. We find that RATD can destroy large grains located within a distance of ~ 1 pc from a massive star of luminosity L~ 10^4L_sun and a supernova. This increases the abundance of small grains relative to large grains and successfully reproduces the observed NIR-MIR excess and anomalous dust extinction/polarization. We show that small grains produced by RATD can also explain the steep far-UV rise in extinction curves toward starburst and high redshift galaxies, as well as the decrease of the escape fraction of Ly-alpha photons observed from HII regions surrounding YMSCs.
In previous study, we showed the feasibility of the in vivo use of portable near infrared system for the determination of human skin moisture. In order to optimize the acquiring condition of NIR spectrum of skin. skin depth profiling was investigated changing the distance and gap size between illumination and receiving of radiation in the terminal of fiber probe. The colleted light information could be controlled depending the distance and gap of fiber optic probe. (omitted)
Numerical analysis is carried out for combined heat transfer in an indirected NIR(Near Infrared Ray) heating chamber. Reynolds number and shapes of absorbed cylinder are known as important parameters on the combined heat transfer effects. Reynolds number based on the outer diameter of the cylinder is varied from $10^3$ to $3{\times}10^5$. Four difference heat transfer regimes are observed: forced convection and radiative heat transfer on the outer surface of the cylinder, pure conduction in the cylinder body, pure natural convection and radiation between lamp surface and inner surface of the cylinder, and radiation from the lamp. Flow and temperature characteristics are presented with iso-contour lines for the absorbed circular and elliptic cylinders to compare their differences. The convective and radiative heat transfer fluxes are also compared with different Reynolds numbers. As usual, Reynolds number is an important factor to estimate increasing convective heat transfer as it increases. The shape of absorbed cylinder results overall heat transfer rates remain unchanged.

The aim of this study was to examine whether near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is an acceptable tool to determine cholesterol and collagen in human atherosclerotic plaque without destruction of the analyzed areas and without danger the endothelial cells - three preconditions for the development of a NIR-heart-catheter. The questions were: Can the cholesterol and collagen content of the arterial intima be estimated with acceptable precision in vitro by NIRS despite the matrix inhomogeneity of the plaques and their anatomic variability\ulcorner How deep can such NIR radiation penetrate into arterial tissue without danger for endothelial cells\ulcorner Is this penetration sufficient for information on the lipid and collagen accumulation\ulcorner Using NIRS, cholesterol and collagen can be determined with acceptable precision in model mixtures and human aortic specimens (r=0,896 to 0,957). The chemical reference method was HPLC. The energy dose was 71 mW/$cm^{-2}$ using a fiber optic strand with a length of 1.5m and an optical window of d=4mm. This dose appears to be not dangerous for endothelial cells, It will be attenuated to 50% by a arterial tissue of about 170-$200\mu\textrm{m}$ thickness. The results are also acceptable using a thin coronary catheter-like fiber optic strand (d=1mm).

The routine analysis of milk chemical components is of major importance both for the management of animals in dairy farms and for quality control in dairy industries. NIRS technology is an analytical technique which greatly simplifies this routine. One of the most critical aspects in NIRS analysis of milk is sample preparation and analysis modes which should be fast and straightforward. An important difficulty when obtaining NIR spectra of milk is the high water content (80 to 90%) of this product, since water absorbs most of the infrared radiation, and, therefore, limits the accuracy of calibrating for other constituents. To avoid this problem, the DESIR system was set up. Other ways of radiation-sample interaction adapted for liquids or semi-liquids exist, which are practically instantaneous and with limited or null necessity of sample preparation: Transmission and Folded Transmission or Transflectance. The objective of the present work is to compare the precision and accuracy of milk calibration equations in two analysis modes: Reflectance (dry milk) and Folded Transmission (liquid milk). A FOSS-NIR Systems 6500 I spectrophotometer (400-2500 nm) provided with a spinning module was used. Two NIR spectroscopic methods for milk analysis were compared: a) folded transmission: liquid milk samples in a 0.1 pathlength sample cell (ref. IH-0345) and b) reflectance: dried milk samples in glass fibre filters placed in a standard ring cell. A set of 101 milk samples was used to develop the calibration equations, for the two NIR analysis modes, to predict casein, protein, fat and dry matter contents, and 48 milk samples to predict Somatic Cell Count (SCC). The calibrations obtained for protein, fat and dry matter have an excellent quantitative prediction power, since they present $r^2$ values higher than 0.9. The $r^2$ values are slightly lower for casein and SCC (0.88 and 0.89 respectively), but they still are sufficiently high. The accuracy of casein, protein and SCC equations is not affected by the analysis modes, since their ETVC values are very similar in reflectance and folded transmission (0.19% vs 0.21%; 0.16% vs 0.19% and 55.57% vs 53.11% respectively), Lower SECV values were obtained for the prediction of fat and dry matter with the folded transmission equations (0.14% and 0.25% respectively) compared to the results with the reflectance ones (0.43% and 0.34% respectively). In terms of accuracy and speed of analytical response, NIRS analysis of liquid milk is recommended (folded transmission), since the drying procedure takes 24 hours. However, both analysis modes offer satisfactory results.

Since the SSC(soluble solid contents) and titratable acidity of fruit are highly concerned to the taste, the need for measuring them by non-destructive technology such as NIR(Visual and Near-infrared) spectroscopy is increasing. Specially, in order to grade the quality of each fruit with a sorter at sorting and packing facilities, technologies for online measurement satisfying the tolerance in terms of accuracy and speed should be developed. Many researches have been done to develop devices to measure the internal qualities of fruit such as SSC, titratable acidity, firmness, etc. with the VIS(Visual)/NIR(Near Infrared) reflectance spectra. The distributions of the SSC, titratable acidity, firmness, etc. are different with respect to the position and depth of fruit, and generally the VIS/NIR light can interact with fruit in a few millimeters of pathlength, and it is very difficult to measure the qualities of inner flesh of fruit. Therefore, to measure the average concentrations of each quality factor such as SSC and titratable acidity with the reflectance-type NIR devices, the spectra of fruit at several positions should be measured. Recently, the interest about the transmittance-type VIS/NIR devices is increasing. NIR light can penetrate through the fruit about 1/10-1/1,000,000 %. Therefore, very intensive light source and very sensitive sensor should be adopted to measure the transmitted light spectra of intact fruit. The ultimate purpose of this study was to develop a device to measure the transmitted light spectra of intact fruit such as apple, pear, peach, etc. With the transmittance-type VIS/NIR device, the feasibility of measurement of the SSC and titratable acidity in intact fruit cultivated in Korea was tested. The results are summarized as follows; A simple measurement device which can measure the transmitted light spectra of intact fruit was constructed with sample holder, two 500W-tungsten halogen lamps, a real-time spectrometer having a very sensitive CCD array sensor and optical fiber probe. With the device, it was possible to measure the transmitted light spectra of intact fruit such as apple, pear and peach. Main factors affecting the intensity of transmitted light spectra were the size of sample, the radiation intensity of light source and the integration time of the detector. Sample holder should be designed so that direct light leakage to the probe could be protected. Preprocessing method to the raw spectrum data significantly influenced the performance of the nondestructive measurement of SSC and titratable acidity of intact fruit. Representative results of PLS models in predicting the SSC of peach were SEP of 0.558 Brix% and R2 of 0.819, and those in predicting titratable acidity were SEP of 0.056% and R2 of 0.655.
