Aerodynamic design optimization of rotor airfoil has been performed with advanced design method for improved aerodynamic characteristics of ONERA airfoils. A multiple response surface method is used to consider various requirements in rotor airfoil design. Shape functions for mean camber line are proposed to extend possible design domain. Numerical simulations are performed using KFLOW, a Navier-Stokes solver with shear stress transport turbulence model. The present design method provides favorable configurations for the high performance rotor airfoil. Resulting optimized airfoils give better aerodynamic performance than the baseline airfoils.

The wave attenuation by floating breakwaters in high amplitude waves, which can lead to wave overtopping and breaking, is examined by numerical simulations. The governing equations, the Navier-Stokes equations and the continuity equation, are calculated in a fixed Cartesian grid system. The body boundaries are defined by the line segment connecting the points where the grid line and body surface meet. No-slip and divergence free conditions are satisfied at the body boundary cell. The nonlinear waves near the moving body is defined using the modified marker-density method. To verify the present numerical method, vortex induced vibration on an elastically mounted cylinder and free roll decay are numerically simulated and the results are compared with those reported in the literature. Using the present numerical method, the wave attenuations by three kinds of floating breakwaters are simulated numerically in a regular wave to compare the performance.

Optimization with metamodel is one of numerical optimization methods. Response surface method is performed for making metamodel. The Hcks-Henne function is used for designing 2D shape of the airfoil and spring analogy is used to change the grid according to the change in shape of the airfoil. Aerodynamic coefficient required for response surface method are obtained by using Navier-Stokes solver with $\kappa-\omega$ shear stress transport turbulence model. For the baseline airfoils, OA 312, OA 309, and OA 407 airfoils select and optimize to improve aerodynamic performance.
A design optimization of hypersonic flight vehicle has been studied by using upwind Navier-Stokes method and numerical optimization method. CFD method is linked to numerical optimization method by using a Bezier curve and a design optimization of blunt nose hypersonic flight vehicle has been studied. Heat transfer coefficient and drag coefficient are selected as objective functions or design constraints. The Bezier curve-based shape function was applied to blunt body shape.
A Navier-Stokes code has been developed to simulate the flow through a cross flow fan. It is based on an unstructured finite volume method and uses moving grid technique to model the rotation of the fan. A low Reynolds number turbulence model is used to calculate eddy viscosity. The basic algorithm is SIMPLE. Numerical simulations over a wide range of flow rate aye carried out to validate the code. Comparison of all numerical solutions with experimental data confirms the validity of the present code. Present numerical solutions show a noticeable improvement over a previous numerical method which is based on a model of body force to simulate the rotation of the impeller.
Smart UAV Development Program, one of the 21c Frontier R&D Program sponsored by MOST(Ministry of Science and Technology), was launched in 2002 As an air vehicle for the Smart UAV, CRW(Canard Rotor/wing) concept was one of the candidates compared in trade-off study. The CRW concept has not only been proven completely but its aerodynamic characteristics not known in detail yet. Two calculation methods were adopted in this study to obtain aerodynamic data for the CRW First method was the superpose DATCOM method which is capable of three lifting sufaces, and second one is the full Navier-Stokes computation around CRW configuration using overset grid method. Basic aerodynamic characteristics of the CRW configuration was analyzed and the minimum drag level with lift to drag ratio is presented. The peculiar flow characteristics around rotor/wing and hub were also examined and considered in the configuration design.
The incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in two dimensions are stabilized by a modified residual method, and then discretized by hierarchical elements. The stabilization is necessary to escape from the Ladyzhenskaya-Babuska-Brezzi(LBB) constraint and hence to achieve an equal order formulation. To expedite a standard iterative method such as the conjugate gradient squared(CGS) method, a preconditioning technique called the Hierarchical Iterative Procedure(HIP) has been applied. In this paper, we increased the order of interpolation within an element up to cubic. The hierarchical elements have been used to achieve a higher order accuracy in fluid flow analyses, but a proper efficient iterative procedure for higher order finite element formulation has not been available so far The numerical results by the present HIP for the lid driven cavity flow and others showed the present procedure to be stable, very efficient and useful in flow analyses in conjunction with hierarchical elements.
Three-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations have been solved by the node-centered finite volume method with unstructured hybrid grids. The pressure-velocity coupling is handled by the artificial compressibility algorithm and convective fluxes are obtained by Roe's flux difference splitting scheme with linear reconstruction of the solutions. Euler implicit method is used for time-integration. The viscous terms are discretised in a manner to handle any kind of grids such as tetrahedra, prisms, pyramids, hexahedra, or mixed-element grid. The numerical efficiency and accuracy of the present method is critically evaluated for several example problems.
Three dimensional turbulent flow fields around ships are simulated by a numerical method. Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes equations are used where Reynolds stresses are approximated by Baldwin-Lomax and Sub-Grid Scale(SGS) turbulence models. Body-fitted coordinate system is introduced to conform three dimensional ship geometries. The governing equations are discretized by a finite volume method. Temporal derivatives are approximated by the forward differencing and the convection terms are approximated by the QUICK or Kawamura scheme. The 2nd-order centered differencing is used for other spatial derivatives. Pressure and velocity fields are simultaneously iterated by the Highly Simplified Marker-And-Cell method. To verity the numerical method and turbulence models, flow fields around ships are simulated and compared to the experiments.
In this paper, optimization of the vaned centrifugal compressor was carried out at a given mass flow rate condition. Firstly, impeller optimization was conducted using response surface method (RSM) which is one of optimization methods. After the optimization of the impeller was completed, diffuser optimization was performed with the optimized impeller. In these processes, Navier-Stokes solver was used to calculate the flow inside the centrifugal compressor. And the optimization is performed with Box-Behnken design method which is efficient for fitting second-order response surfaces to reduce the number of calculations required. As a result, compared with the reference model, the efficiency and the pressure ratio of the optimized impeller and diffuser are found to be increased. The performance at off-design conditions is presented.
