To improve our current understanding of tsunami-like solitary waves interacting with a row of vertical slotted piles on a sloping beach, a 3D numerical wave tank based on the CFD tool $OpenFOAM^{(R)}$ was developed in this study. The Navier-Stokes equations were employed to solve the two-phase incompressible flow, combining with an improved VOF method to track the free surface and a LES model to resolve the turbulence. The numerical model was firstly validated by our laboratory measurements of wave, flow and dynamic pressure around both a row of piles and a single pile on a slope subjected to solitary waves. Subsequently, a series of numerical experiments were conducted to analyze the breaking wave force in view of varying incident wave heights, offshore water depths, spaces between adjacent piles and beach slopes. Finally, a slamming coefficient was discussed to account for the breaking wave force impacting on the piles.

This manuscript illustrates the dynamic response of nanoscale carbon nanotubes (CNTs) embedded in an elastic media under moving load using doublet mechanics theory, which not considered before. CNTs are modelled by Timoshenko beam theory (TBT) and a bottom to up modelling nano-mechanics is simulated by doublet mechanics theory to capture the size effect of CNTs. To explore the influence of the CNTs configurations on the dynamic behaviour, both armchair and zigzag configurations are considered. The governing equations of motion and the associated boundary conditions are obtained using the Hamiltonian principle. The Navier solution methodology is applied to obtain the solutions for both orientations. Free vibration and forced response under moving loads are considered. The accuracy of the developed procedure is verified by comparing the obtained results with available previous algorithms and good agreement is observed. Parametric studies are conducted to demonstrate effects of doublet length scale, CNTs configurations, moving load velocities as well as the elastic media parameters on the dynamic behaviours of CNTs. The developed procedure is supportive in the design and manufacturing of MEMS/NEMS made from CNTs.

This paper presents numerical investigations into the particle crushing effect on the shear properties of gravel under direct shear condition. A novel particle crushing model was developed based on the octahedral shear stress criterion and fragment replacement method. A series of direct shear tests were carried out on unbreakable particles and breakable particles with different strengths. The evolutions of the particle crushing, shear strength, volumetric strain behavior, and contact force fabric during shearing were analyzed. It was observed that the number of crushed particles increased with the increase of the shear displacement and axial pressure and decreased with the particle strength increasing. Moreover, the shear strength and volume dilatancy were obviously decreased with particle crushing. The shear displacement of particles starting to crush was close to that corresponding to the peak shear stress got. Besides, the shear-hardening behavior was obviously affected by the number of crushed particles. A microanalysis showed that due to particle crushing, the contact forces and anisotropy decreased. The mechanism of the particle crushing effect on the shear strength was further clarified in terms of the particle friction and interlock.

Euler codes or Navier-Stokes codes for compressible flows suffer severe degradation in convergence as Mach number approaches zero. The convergence problem arose from the wide disparity in characteristic speeds can be solved using preconditioning methods without large modifications. In this paper, a preconditioned RANS(Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes) solver is developed for analysis of low Mach number flows. In order to validate the method, computational examples are chosen and the results are compared with the experimental data and the existing computed results showing a good accuracy and convergence characteristics for steady inviscid, laminar and turbulent flows at low Mach number.

In the present study, a passive control method, using a porous wall and cavity system, is applied to the shock wave/boundary layer interactions in transonic moist air flow. The two-dimensional, unsteady, compressible, Navier-Stokes equations, which are fully coupled with a droplet growth equation, are solved by the third-order MUSCL type TVD finite difference scheme. Baldwin-Lomax model is employed to close the governing equations. In order to investigate the effectiveness of the present control method, the total pressure loss of the flow and the time-dependent behaviour of shock motions are analyzed in detail. The computed results show that the present passive control method considerably reduces the total pressure losses due to the shock wave/boundary layer interaction in transonic moist air flow and suppresses the unsteady shock wave motions over the airfoil as well. It is also found that the location of the porous ventilation significantly affects the control effectiveness.

Aerodynamic characteristics over Micro Aerial Vehicle(MAV) in low Reynolds number regime are numerically studied using 3-D unsteady, incompressible Navier-Stokes flow solver with single partitioning method for multi-block grid. For more efficient computation of unsteady flows, this flow solver is parallel-implemented with MPl(Message Passing Interface) programming method. Firstly, MAV wing with not complex geometry is considered and then, we analyze aerodynamic characteristics over full MAV configuration varying the angle of attack. Present computational results show a better agreement with the experimental data by MACDL(Micro Aerodynamic Control and Design Lab.), Seoul National University. We can also find the conceptually designed MAV by MACDL has the static stability.

This paper presents calculated results of the free-surface flow around a Series 60($C_B=0.6$) model. Three-dimensional Navier-Sotkes equations are solved and Baldwin-Lomax algebraic turbulence model is adopted to simulate the high Reynolds-number flow. To reduce computational efforts, velocity components near the wall are extrapolated with a the solved by using the Implicit Approximate Factorization method[2]. The successive-over-relaxation method is used for solving pressure-Poisson equation when obtaining the pressure field projecting the divergence-free velocity field. To simulate the free-surface flows more precisely, the numerical scheme solving the equation for the kinematic boundary condition is very important. In this paper, there numerical schemes are employed and the results are compared with the available experimental data.

In the present paper, flow characteristics and free surface waves generated by a submerged hydrofoil advancing with an uniform speed are calculated. Using a numerical method based on a MAC(Marker And Cell) method, the Navier-Stokes and the continuity equations are solved to simulate flow fields around the hydrofoil. Computations are carried out in a rectangular grid system in which grids are concentrated near the foil and the free surface to improve numerical accuracies. Viscous flow phenomenas including pressure distributions are computed. Moreover, the influences of submerged depths upon the generated wave profiles and the wave breaking phenomena are also investigated. Experiments are performed at the towing tank of Inha University to measure free surface wave elevations due to the advancing hydrofoil. The computational results are compared with the present and the other available experimental data to show the accuracy of the numerical method developed.

The computations of the turbulent flow around the ship models with the free-surface effects were carried out. Incompressible Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes equations were solved by using an explicit finite-difference method with the nonstaggered grid system. The method employed second-order finite differences for the spatial discretization and a four-stage Runge-Kutta scheme for the temporal integration. For the turbulence closure, a modified Baldwin-Lomax model was exploited. The location of the free surface was determined by solving the equation of the kinematic free-surface condition using the Lax-Wendroff scheme and a free-surface conforming grid was generated at each time step so that one of the grid boundary surfaces always coincides with the free surface. An inviscid approximation of the dynamic free-surface boundary condition was applied as the boundary conditions for the velocity and pressure on the free surface. To validate the computational method developed in the present study, the computations were carried out for beth Wigley and Series 60 $C_B=0.6$ ship model and the computational results showed good agreements with the experimental data.

In this paper presented, a design method of sandwich slab bridge of simple supported made by composite materials. Many of the bridge systems, including the girders and cross-beams, and concrete decks behave as the special orthotropic plates. Such systems with sections, boundary conditions other than Navier or Levy solution types, or with irregular cross sections, analytical solution is very difficult to obtain. Thus, Finite Difference Method is used for analysis of the pertinent problem. For the design of bridge made by the composite materials, cross-section is used the form-core shape because of this shape is economical and profitable, and for output of the stress value used F.D.M. Based the experimental of a composite specialist, an equation expressing the rate of decrease of tensile strength of glass fibers based on increase of mass was obtained. From these equations, one can estimate the rate of tensile strength reduction due to increased size. Tasi-Wu failure criterion for stress space is used. Strength-failure analysis procedure, using these reduced tensile strength, is presented.
