  • The deposit (named Kanweoldo deposit) unconformably overlain by the Holocene tidal deposit is mainly exposed along the tidal channel of the Sajangpo tidal flat of Cheonsu Bay, west coast of Korea. The Kanweoldo deposit's sedimentary textures, sedimentary structures and erosion surfaces of the stratigraphic events have been investigated. The Kanweoldo deposit is mainly composed of mud, silt and sandy mud. The sedimentary criteria indicating intertidal deposit i.e. lenticular bedding, thinly and coarsely interlayered bedding, wavy lamination and flaser bedding are positively found in the Kanweoldo deposit. The deposit is semi-consolidated and brown in color, and has erosional contact (stratigraphic boundary) with the overlying Holocene tidal deposit. Considering such Kanweoldo deposit's sedimentary characteristics and stratigraphic relation with the Holocene tidal deposit, the Kanweoldo deposit seems to be deposited under intertidal environment during Riss-Wurm interglacial period and subaerially exposed and eroded during the last glacial period.

  • Flow visualization study has been conducted to simulate the turbulent dispersion behavior of a crossflow jet physically under the conditions of various thermal stratification in a wind tunnel. A smoke jet with the constant ratio of the jet to freestream velocity is injected normally to the cross flow of the thermally stratified wind tunnel(TSWT) for flow visualization. The typical natures of the smoke dispersion under different thermal stratifications such as neutral, weakly stable, strongly stable, weakly unstable, strongly unstable and inversion layer are successfully reproduced in the TSWT. The Instantaneous velocity and temperature fluctuations are measured by using a cold and hot-wire combination probe. The time averaged dispersion behaviors, the centerline trajectories, the spreading angles and the virtual origins of the cross jet are deduced from the edge detected images with respect to the stability parameter. All the general characteristics of the turbulent dispersion behavior reveal that the definitely different dispersion mechanisms are inherent in both stable and unstable conditions. It is conjectured that the turbulent statistics obtained in the various stability conditions quantitatively demonstrate the vertical scalar flux plays a key role in the turbulent dispersion behavior.

  • In esthetic dentistry, color and strength are basic requirements for the long-term success of the restorative materials. Several all ceramic systems have been introduced to esthetic dentistry recently. However, the inherent natures of ceramic material, the application of all ceramic system is mainly limited to single tooth restorations. With the improvement of material science, the alumina and zirconia/alumina composite power and block can be applied to fabrication of all ceramic bridges. The conventional inceram core fabrication takes time for sintering however, the shaping of block with a copy milling machine can reduce great amount of time. The block is easy to manipulate and prepare in any shape accurately. This clinical report demonstrates the application of all ceramic ante rior 3 unit bridge with a alumina block in CELAY system.

  • Hydrogen energy is becoming popular day by day due to its renewability and pollutaaant free natures. Hydrogen gas pressure which is after passing through reciprocating compressor part has high pulsation wave form. A unit, snubber is used as compressor components to reduce the harmful pulsation waveform and to remove the impurities in the hydrogen gas. An experiment has been conducted to investigate the pulsation reduction performance of different arrangement of snubber i.e. snubber array used in reciprocating compression system. Analyzing the snubber array experimental data, it is found that the pressure fluctuations are reduced from 90.1977% ~ 92.6336% with pressure loss 1.5013% ~ 4.9034% for compressor operation at different speed which ensure the good performance of snubber-array as pulsation damper in hydrogen compressing system.

  • The instantaneous and ensemble averaged flow characteristics of a round jet issuing normally into a crossflow was studied using a flow visualization technique and Particle Image Velocimetry measurements. Experiments were performed at a jet-to-crossflow velocity ratio, 3.3, and two Reynolds numbers, 1050 and 2100, based on crossflow velocity and jet diameter. Instantaneous laser tomographic images of the vertical center plane of the crossflow jet showed that there exist very different natures in the flow structures of the near field jet even though the velocity ratio is the same. It was found that the shear layer becomes much thicker when the Reynolds number is 2100 due to the strong entrainment of the inviscid fluid by turbulent interaction between the jet and crossflow. The mean and second order statistics were calculated by ensemble averaging over 1000 realizations of instantaneous velocity fields. The detail characteristics of mean flow field, stream wise and vertical r.m.s. velocity fluctuations, and Reynolds shear stress distributions were presented. The new PlV results were compared with those from previous experimental and LES studies.

  • Long and slender body with or without flexible supports under severe operating condition can be unstabilized even by the small cross flow. Turbulent flow mixer, which actually increases thermal-hydraulic performance of the nuclear fuel by boosting turbulence, disturbs the flow field around the fuel rod and affects dynamic behavior of the nuclear fuel rods. Few studies on this problem can be found in the literature because these effects depend on the specific natures of the support and the design of the system. This work shows how the dynamics of a multi-span fuel rod can be affected by the turbulent flow, which is discretely activated by a flow mixer. By solving a state-space form of the eigenvalue equation for a multi-span fuel rod system, the critical velocity at which a fuel rod becomes unstable was established. Based on the simulation results, we evaluated how stability of a multi-spanned nuclear fuel rod with mixing vanes can be affected by the coolant flow in an operating reactor core.

  • The nature of the active site of Tobacco acetohydroxyacid synthase (AHAS) in the substrate- and cofactorbinding was studied by kinetics and fluorescence spectroscopy. The substrate saturation curve does not follow Michaelis-Menten kinetics at different temperatures (7, 21 and 37 ${^{\circ}C}$), pH (6.5, 7.5 and 8.5) and buffers (Tris-HCl and MOPS). The concentration of one half of the maximum velocity ($S_{0.5}$) decreased in the following order: pyruvate $\gt$ ThDP $\approx$$Mg^{+2}$ $\gt$ FAD. However, the catalytic efficiency (K$_{cat}/S_{0.5}$) inversely decreased in the following order; FAD $\gt$ $Mg^{+2}$ $\approx$ThDP $\gt$ pyruvate, indicating that the cofactors by in decreasing order; FAD, $Mg^{+2}$, ThDP, affect the catalysis of AHAS. The dissociation constant ($K_d$) of the intrinsic tryptophan fluorescence decreased with the same tendency of the concentration of one half of the maximum velocity ($S_{0.5}$) decreasing order. This data provides evidence that the substrate and cofactor binding natures of the active site, as well as its activation characteristics, resemble those of other ThDP-dependent enzymes.

  • Rusty root of ginseng has been known as one of the limiting factors in ginseng production in Korea. An attempt was, therefore, made to elucidate biological and chemical natures of the rusty root, and the redox Potential of the ginseng cultivated soils were measured and compared with diseased and non-diseased soils. Reddish discoloration was most frequently observed on the epidermis of ginseng root and the pigments were accumulated in all epidermal cells of the diseased lesions. The lower the redox potential of the ginseng cultivated soil was, the more severe the rusty root was observed. Fe content in the diseased epidermis was 3 times higher than that of healthy one. Organic acids such as oxalic, malonic, succinic, and citric acids were also higher in the mss root than in the healthy one. Thin layer chromatogram of phenolic acid fractions obtained from the epidermal cells of the rusty root of ginseng exhibited 3 to 4 unidentified substances not found in the healthy root. Also lignification of the epidermal cells and the activity of phenylalanine ammonia lyase were greater in the rusty root than the healthy root. Colony formation and conidia production of F. solani, And mycelial growth and sclerotium formation of Sclerotinia sp. isolated from ginseng root were suppressed in a nutritionally minimal medium supplemented with water extract of rusty ginseng root epidermis. It is, therefore, suggested that rusty root of ginseng is caused by unfavorable rhizosphere environmental stress or stresses resulting abnormal metabolism in the root as a selfdefence mechanism of non-specific resistance responses.

  • Freak waves in the ocean are recently drawing much attention as a natural disaster to ocean structures and navigating ships as well. Several observation data, among them the Draupner New Year Wave, show the very impressive feature of Freak waves whose wave height is up to three times as high as the significant wave height of surrounding waves, In addition, Freak wave appears as an isolated very high crest in somewhat stationary random waves of same order in their wavelengths. Bearing such characteristics in mind, one notices its extraordinary steepness. This strongly suggests that Freak wave is not long lived but transient nature on the whole. A great number of studies to explain these natures were published from both theoretical and numerical point of view. However it is not sure if they are applicable to actual ocean environment. In this paper, we deal with the results concerning abnormal and/or Freak waves from in-situ ocean wave data and point out several remarks to the problems lain behind the contributions in this context. A physical experiment is described to reinforce the subject discussed from the observation data.

  • This paper presents a study on the permittivities of the I-glass fabric/epoxy composite laminates containing carbon black dispersions at microwave frequency. Measurements were performed at the frequency band of 5 GHz∼18 GHz. The results showed that the complex permittivities of the composites depend strongly on the natures and concentrations of the carbon black dispersion. A new scheme is proposed to obtain a mixing law for the estimation of the complex permittivities of the composite laminates as a function of concentration of carbon black. Simultaneously, the complex permittivity of carbon black itself was also calculated by the scheme. The experimental values of the complex permittivities of the composites were compared to those calculated.
