This study investigated the perceptions of elementary school preservice teachers in their 4th year at K-Education University, an elementary school teacher-training institution, on the nature of science (NOS). To examine the differences in elementary school preservice teachers' perceptions of NOS according to their high school career aptitude, we conducted in-depth interviews with two students each in the humanities and social sciences (HS) and natural sciences (NS) based on the subjects that they had taken while attending high school. For this purpose, we used the Views of Nature of Science Form C (VNOS-C) and Views about Scientific Inquiry (VASI) questionnaires, which were reconfigured. The main research results were that the elementary school preservice teachers showed a positivistic perspective on the NOS, validity of scientific knowledge, difference between theory and law, and social and cultural embeddedness of science. However, they had a latest perspective on the tentativeness of scientific knowledge, observation and inference, and the role of imagination and creativity. In particular, there were clear differences in perception between HS and NS teachers in the areas of tentativeness of scientific knowledge and understanding of observation and inference. Based on these research results, educational implications for improving the science education competencies of preservice elementary school teachers were proposed.

In this study, we investigated the effects of explicit and reflective instruction about nature of science (NOS) using episodes from the history of science upon students' understanding about NOS, achievement, and enjoyment of science lessons. Four classes of ninth graders (N=129) at a coed middle school were divided into the control and the treatment groups. The students were taught about the composition of material for 11 classes. Before the instruction, most of the students in both the control and the treatment groups held naive views about NOS. After the instructions, the views about NOS of the control group students did not change, whereas the students in the treatment group held more adequate views about NOS. The high-level students in the treatment group showed more adequate views about NOS than the low-level students. However, there were no significant differences between the test scores of the two groups in the achievement and the enjoyment of science lessons.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationships between elementary school teachers' points of view about the organization of the science curriculum and their views on the nature of science (NOS). We surveyed 132 elementary school teachers' view points about these two kinds of views, analyzed the data by their variables, and compared the two viewpoints with their personal details. The elementary school teachers thought the science curriculum should be emphasized through the process more than contents. They thought the contents of the science curriculum should be integrated rather than separated. As teachers' career progressed, they focused on the contents more than the process. On the other hands, because elementary school teachers showed the NOS views as relativism, deductivism, decontextualism, content, and instrumentalism, when we plotted sub-viewpoints of NOS in process-content dimension, we thought it would be similar distributions with point of views on the organization of science curriculum. However, there was no meaningful relation. This showed that teachers' views on the organization of the curriculum and the NOS are totally different. These findings suggest further research is needed to find how factors influence elementary school teachers' views on the organization of the science curriculum and what inclinations can occur in science classes with their different views.

The purpose of this study is to identify the status of the science museum reflected in the exhibition, and develop and apply Nature of Science(NOS) education programs based on the science museum exhibition. The analyse tool was developed to understand the NOS in the science museum. The researchers recognized the nature of science reflected in four exhibition halls in Korea. Based on the analysis, we developed the NOS education program. NOS education programs were developed and applied to supplement the NOS that appears to be limited to scientific exhibitions based on the prior analysis of science exhibition. The results of the study were as follows. First, we analyzed the nature of science reflected in the exhibition of two main science museums, and it was mostly implicit and most were to understand the relationship among STS(Science-Technology-Society). And also we analyzed the NOS reflected in the exhibition of two national history museum, and it was also mostly implicit and most were about the way of how to find out the knowledge, inference. Second, in order to supplement the NOS of the science museum, we developed the NOS education program based on the exhibits. After applying it to the science museum, we conducted a qualitative study. As a result, there was a positive change only in the aspects of NOS (science is tentative, science is from creativity and imaginative, science is the produce of social and culture, science is from the scientific method) that reflected explicitly. The conclusions derived from this study are as follows : For the cultivation of science in the scientific museum, various factors are needed depending on the theme of the science museum. Also, it is helpful to actively implement the NOS educational programs that utilize the exhibit. Therefore, the exhibit planners' and developers' competencies are critical to develop explicit NOS education programs in its expertise.
A longitudinal study traced changes in students' understanding of Nature Of science (NOS) through the public secondary science education in Ontario Canada. Although the concepts of NOS are complicated, and students' understandings are not easy to change, not many longitudinal studies have been done across the world. The current study tried to identify the changes of participating students' understandings of NOS for two and half years of public secondary science education in Ontario Canada. Pretest was administered using Views of Nature of Science (VNOS-C) when six participants graduated from a middle school of Toronto. Two and half years of secondary education, the posttest was carried out using the same instrument. After pre and posttest, probing interviews were performed. The analysis of the data was founded on the Standards and the conceptual framework for this study. The findings were that the initial views have little changed. Most examples and explanations the participants provided were from their science classes. Lab activities for confirming the existing laws and theories and observable photos in science textbooks made students regard the knowledge as a truth. Naturally, their knowledge has been expanded for 2 and 1/2 years, but this expansion of scientific knowledge led students toward Universalist views on science. On the other hand, when science was presented with a historical approach or was networked with other concepts, students acknowledged science and scientific knowledge had been induced from inferences as well as observations and experimental results. Based on the findings the authors of this research suggest that educating the knowledge of science should be historical and networked approaches rather than teaching the knowledge as concise and true statements of the nature.

The objective of this study is developing an instrument for investigating views of the respondents on nature of science(NOS) by using experienced scientific knowledge, atomic model. It consists of total six questions and 36 detail items, and each question is reflected the aspects of different NOS which are 'recognition on the model', 'tentativeness of scientific knowledge', 'subjectivity in science', 'use of inference and imagination', 'myths of the scientific method', and 'comparison between science and art'. Particularly, 'comparison between science and art' is addressed almost for the first time in this questionnaire. In the class environment almost not to teach nature of science linking with concrete scientific knowledge, to inquire how the students recognize nature of science, relating to experienced scientific knowledge through this questionnaire will give the data of scientific knowledge based recognition on the nature of science and an important implication for nature of science teaching with concrete scientific knowledge. Developing processes have gone through four steps. In first step, we chose aspects of NOS and developed questions and details. In second step, we tested the draft into fifteen science teachers and, reflecting their opinions, corrected the form and contents of questionnaires. In third step, we tested the questionnaire included writing section for expressing thoughts of the respondents into 55 students in science high school and checked index of coincidence between Likert and open-ended responses which shows 88.2% degree of consensus. Furthermore, to identify the feature of using concrete scientific knowledge we applied this and views on science and education questionnaires together into six university students. We performed final test to 68 university students and measured Cronbach's, and ultimately completed final questionnaire in last step.
In order to teach the nature of science which is one of the goals of science education, the aesthetic model of science was developed into a two-dimensional model through theoretical reviews on the aesthetic aspect of science. We represented 10 kinds of scientific experiments that scientists thought are beautiful in the aesthetic space of science. This paper tried to represent the greatest and famous scientific experiments in the history of science into the aesthetic space of science to find the suitability or usefulness of that model. At the same time, we were able to develop measuring tools as the Likert-scale with pictures of scientific experiments. Through this, we propose various teaching approaches on the nature of science (NOS) based on the aesthetic model of science and the potential for utilization in measuring the effects of the ways of teaching NOS.

In this study, we investigated the effects of small group discussion using episodes from the history of science on students' understanding about the nature of science (NOS), achievement, enjoyment of science lessons, and science learning motivation. Participants were 138 ninth graders from a middle school in Seoul and they were assigned to a control group and a treatment group. Students in the treatment group were provided with two contrasting perspectives concerning the NOS and were encouraged to discuss them in small groups. The intervention lasted for 5 class periods. The results revealed that students of both the control group and the treatment group were found to possess similar views about NOS in a NOS pretest, whereas students of the treatment group exhibited more sophisticated understanding in a NOS posttest. The scores of the treatment group were also significantly higher than those of the control group in an enjoyment of science lessons test and a learning motivation test. However, there was no significant difference between two groups in the achievement test scores.
Understanding the nature of science (NOS) has been a major component of scientific literacy and an important learning goal in science education (American Association for the Advancement of Science, 1990, 1993; Millar & Osborne, 1998; National Research Council, 1996, 2013). To achieve this goal, it is necessary to include appropriate views of the nature of science in science curriculum such as a textbook. The aim of this study was to conduct a content analysis of the elementary science textbooks to examine the presentation of the nature of science (NOS) using the four themes of scientific literacy, which are (1) nature of scientific knowledge, (2) nature of scientific inquiry, (3) nature of scientific thinking, and (4) nature of interactions among science, technology, and society (STS). Findings show while $3^{rd}$ and $4^{th}$ grade levels of science textbooks heavily emphasize on the Theme I, nature of scientific knowledge and the Theme II, the nature of scientific inquiry, the upper grade levels such as $5^{th}$ and $6^{th}$ grades of science textbooks are well balanced with the four themes of the nature of science. In addition, most of elementary science textbooks little focus on the Theme IV, nature of interactions among science, technology, and society (STS) among the four themes of the nature of science. It might be a shortcoming because the understanding the nature of interacions among science, technology and society (STS) is one of the key components in order for students to be a scientific literate person.
