  • The dynamic coupling between shaker and test-article has been investigated by recent research through the so called Virtual Shaker Testing (VST) approach. Basically a VST model includes the mathematical models of the test-item, of the shaker body, of the seismic mass and the facility vibration control algorithm. The subsequent coupled dynamic simulation even if more complex than the classical hard-mounted sine test-prediction, is a closer representation of the reality and is expected to be more accurate. One of the most remarkable benefits of VST is the accurate quantification of the frequency down-shift (with respect to the hard-mounted value), typically affecting the first lateral resonance of heavy test-items, like medium or large size Spacecraft (S/Cs), once mounted on the shaker. In this work, starting from previous successful VST experiences, the parameters having impact on the frequency shift are identified and discussed one by one. A simplified analytical system is thus defined to propose an efficient and effective way of calculating the lower bound frequency shift through a simple equation. Such equation can be useful to correct the S/C lateral natural frequency measured during the test, in order to remove the contribution attributable to the shaker in use. The so-corrected frequency value becomes relevant when verifying the compliance of the S/C w.r.t. the frequency requirement from the Launcher Authority. Moreover, it allows to perform a consistent post-test correlation of the first lateral natural frequency of S/C FE model.

  • As a series of the studies of thin rubber coated fabrics, the experiments were concentrated on the investigation of the physical properties of the surface and back coated fabrics with natural and synthetic rubber. Cotton poplin and nine other cotton shootings were used as a base fabric and both sides of fabric, face and back, were coated by means of topping or spreading process. The physical properties of finished material were broadly investigated especially in view of the quality requirements of the poncho.

  • The physical properties of rubber coated fabrics, treated by means of spreading and topping process were studied. 1. The tearing strength of the rubber coated fabrics has shown decreasing tendency in comparison with fabric itself 2. Generally, the tearing strength is inversely proportional to the adhesion. 3. The value of hydrostatic pressure is in proportion to the density and tensile strength of the fabrics. 4. The topping process shows greater difference in adhesion initial and after water immersion than spreading process.

  • The purpose of this paper is to verify a finite element model of an automotive exhaust system using Modal testing. In general, a lot of finite element models are used in initial design step of automotive development. One of them is a finite element model of an exhaust system. Verification on the finite element model of an automotive exhaust system is indispensable. In this paper, a finite element analysis on the exhaust system using MSC/NASTRAN is carried out, and the results are compared with those obtained by modal testing. By comparing MAC values of the analytical modes with the experimental modes, the finite element model of the automotive exhaust system is verified.

  • The experimental modal testing has been carried out for the stator of a generator to confirm the vibrational mode shapes and the corresponding natural frequencies. The model of the stator for the vibration analysis was developed and a series of vibration analyses was carried out. And the properties of the solid element were updated to reduce the differences of the natural frequencies between the measured and the analysed. In the vibration anlyses, the axial, radial and circumferential properties of the solid element were separately varied to take into account the orthotropic effect of the laminated structure and to match the primary modes of the stator core which were extracted from the modal testing. After several attempts to match the measured natural frequencies and model shapes, the properties of the stator model were determined. Comparison of the vibration analyses results based on the determined properties showed fairly good coincidence with the measured data.

  • This research deals with how to select connection positions of two substructures to be synthesized. The goal of this research is to find optimal connection positions in order to maximize the fundamental natural frequency of the synthesized structure. The natural frequencies of a connected structure are obtained by modal-force equations. Optimal connection positions can be selected through optimization process. In the optimization process, the natural frequencies of a connected structure are set to object function value and connection positions become design variables. The method described above is applied to synthesis problems of plates, which is initially conducted for FE models and verified through experiments. Especially in experiments. FRF(frequency response function) s are obtained by means of the Modal Testing technique to be used in modal-force equations for synthesizing. Once the substructures are synthesized. the Modal Testing technique is again applied to spot-welded structure using the result from the optimization procedure. It is found that the fundamental natural frequency of the synthesized structure with the optimized result gives higher value than those with the initially given connection positions.

  • For the stable operation of high speed aerostatic spindle, the low rotational inertia and high damping ratio of spindle shafts as well as high fundamental natural frequency are indispensable. Conventional steel spindles are not appropriate for very high speed operation because of their high rotational inertia and low damping ratio. In this study, the composite spindles with aerostatic bearing were designed and manufactured with carbon fiber/epoxy composite. The fundamental natural frequency of the composite spindle was evaluated through the modal testing.

  • In the field of dynamic measurement and structural damage identification, it is generally known that modal frequencies may be measured with higher accuracy than mode shapes. However, the number of natural frequencies within a measurable range is limited. Accessing additional forms of modal frequencies is thus desirable. The present study is concerned about the extraction of artificial boundary condition (ABC) frequencies from modal testing. The ABC frequencies correspond to the natural frequencies of the structure with a perturbed boundary condition, but they can be extracted from processing the frequency response functions (FRF) measured in a specific configuration from the structure in its existing state without the need of actually altering the physical support condition. This paper presents a comprehensive experimental investigation into the measurability of the ABC frequencies from physical experiments. It covers the testing procedure through modal testing, the data processing and data analysis requirements, and the FRF matrix operations leading to the extraction of the ABC frequencies. Specific sources of measurement errors and their effects on the accuracy of the extracted ABC frequencies are scrutinised. The extracted ABC frequencies are subsequently applied in the damage identification in beams by means of finite element model updating. Results demonstrate that it is possible to extract the first few ABC frequencies from the modal testing for a variety of artificial boundary conditions incorporating one or two virtual pin supports, and the inclusion of ABC frequencies enables the identification of structural damages without the need to involve the mode shape information.
