Metal concentrations of Chinese herbal medicine products in the United States

  • We determined arsenic, lead, mercury and cadmium concentrations in Chinese herbal medicines sold in the United States by medical use parts. 54 kinds of herbal products including 9 medical use parts (radix, rhizoma, cortex, pericarpium, fructus, lignum, semen, folium, and herba) were analyzed using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry for arsenic, lead and cadmium, and using mercury analyzer for mercury. Arsenic (median concentration, 0.25 mg/g), mercury (0.20 mg/g), lead (3.78 mg/g) and cadmium (0.39 mg/g) were detected in 71%, 54%, 35%, and 18% of 143 herbal medicine samples, respectively. A total of 27% and 12% of 143 products analyzed contained mercury and cadmium above the regulatory standards. Herba and folium (leaves of herbal plants) were the most contaminated parts from metals, whereas pericarpium, lignum and semen (outer layers and seeds) were less contaminated. This study suggests that metal contamination is different by medical use parts. Our findings provide further evidence that efforts to protect people using traditional remedies from metal intoxication should be made to enforce the regulatory standards.

  • Today we are inclined to dine out more frequently according as the national income is increased and Women enter into the Social life, 'This tendency results in the universality of foodculture and the food made of fresh food stuff as well as the Pollution-free food is preferable as everyone warits to eat natural food or health food and escapes from the pollution. Moreover we have socail problems like fatress and adult disease which result from the small amount of activity or the food with high calory and high gat. under this circumstance. the most adeguate food seems to be Italian good. It stand in the spottight of food world and is most preferable for everyone today. The sphere of food and beverage has a low value-added-rate compartry to the high increasing rate of customers and profit, so, the efficient managing method for the cost of food and beverage and the operating skill in the kitchen are the principal factors leading to success or failure. Therefore, this research is to show some remedies as follows, pointing out the operating problems of an selected Italian restaurant at the top class hotel. First, most Italian restaurant at the hotel are located in the best place and investing the big capital, But they are open for only 8 hours through a day. This should be improved not to bring a enormous loss to the hotel The brealefast menus such as vegetables or fish food, pizza and pasta which modern man can easily enjoy should be developed open the restaurants for morning gours. Second, the business hours are not made continously. As a result, all the emplyees should stay in the company all day long without taking any advantage of the losed time, This will be the loss for both the company and the employees, By veloping the morning menus, employees shald be classified into morning and afternoon staffs and the opening and closing hour at 3 and 6 O'clock should be used so that minimum number of employees may operate the company. Third, the characteristic of Italian food is in the use of fresh food stuff, The proper purchase of food stuff and the simple distributing system will help Italian restaurant show its character istcc as a hzgh-grade restaurant. Fourth, the most popular Italian food such as pizza or pasta should be market with Priority.

Optimization of Extraction Condition of Methyl Jasmonate-treated Wild Ginseng Adventitious Root Cultures using Response Surface Methodology

  • The usage of wild ginseng (Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer) has been limited due to short supply and high price. Therefore, sufficient production as well as efficient extraction of mountain ginseng are required for the development as products. In this study, wild ginseng adventitious root cultures were prepared for efficient production with advantages of fast growth and stable production. Treatment of methyl jasmonate (MJ) to wild ginseng adventitious root cultures increased the extraction yield and antioxidative activity. Further investigation on effect of extraction conditions suggested the importance of ethanol concentration on antioxidative activity and extraction yield of MJ-treated wild ginseng adventitious root cultures. Optimized extraction condition of MJ-treated wild ginseng adventitious root cultures for maximum extraction yield and antioxidative activity was determined using response surface methodology with three-level-three-factor Box-Behnken design (BBD). Extraction of 1 g MJ-treated wild ginseng adventitious root culture with 30 ml of 9% ethanol at $30^{\circ}C$ produced 310.2 mg extract with 71.0% antioxidative activity at $100{\mu}g/ml$. Taken together, MJ-treated wild ginseng adventitious root culture is valuable source for wild ginseng usage and optimized extraction condition can be used for the development of functional products or folk remedies.

Immunomodulatory Effects of Supplementation with Extracts from the Marine Brown Alga Eisenia bicyclis on Macrophages

  • A large number of edible seaweeds are consumed by the coastal peoples of Asia. Some of them are used in traditional remedies in many parts of the world. In this study we investigated effects of supplementation with ethyl acetate extracts of the brown alga Eisenia bicyclis (EBE) on rat macrophage to evaluate the possibilities as immune-modulators. Twelve male SD rats were divided into two groups and the treatments were as follows: A, no Eisenia bicyclis extract (EBE) intake and distilled water ; B, oral supplemented with EBE 200 mg/kg. After 5 weeks of supplementation, rats were sacrificed to assess the effect on peritoneal macrophage functions. We showed no increasing effects on tumoricidal activity, phagocytic activity and NO production in macrophages in EBE supplementation group. However, EBE supplementation suppressed NO-iNOS production and p65 translocation into the nucleus in LPS-stimulated macrophages. Overall, these results suggest that the supplementation of EBE might have an anti-inflammatory effects on NO-iNOS production in macrophages throughout the inhibition of NF-${\kappa}B$ activation.

각질형세포와 피지선세포 공배양을 통한 지루성 피부염 억제 소재 연구 (The Study about Relief Effect of Essential Oil on Seborrheic Dermatitis with Co-culture System)

  • 보통 지루성 피부염은 과다 생성된 피지와 함께 피지를 영양분으로 상재하는 M. globosa 이스트에 의해서 얼굴, 몸 및 두피에 자주 발생하는 피부질환이다. 본 연구는 천연정유성분(Natural essential oils)으로부터 지루성 피부염과 관련된 항염증 활성과 M. globosa 이스트에 대한 증식 억제 활성을 평가하고자 하였다. 지루성 피부염 진정 효능을 평가하기 위해서 지루성 피부염 환경을 모사한 공배양 세포 평가 모델을 구축하였다. 본 평가모델을 통해서 육계(Cinnamomum zeylanicum, Cinnamon bark)의 껍질 및 박하(Mentha arvensis, Cornmint)의 잎에서 추출한 천연정유 성분이 다양한 지루성 피부염 자극원에 따른 Interleukin-$1{\alpha}$ (IL-$1{\alpha}$), Interleukin-6 (IL-6), Interleukin-8 (IL-8) 사이토카인의 발현량 증가와 피지생성 증가를 감소시킴을 확인하였다. 또한, 지루성 피부염 유발균으로 알려진 M. globosa 이스트에 대한 증식 저해 평가를 통해 두 정유성분에서 유의한 M. globosa 증식 억제 능(MIC ${\leq}0.0625%$)을 확인하였다. 본 연구 결과로부터 육계껍질 및 박하 잎 정유성분이 지루성 피부염에 따른 염증성 사이토카인의 발현량을 감소시켰다. 특히 육계 껍질 오일은 지루성 피부염 주요 원인인 Malassezia furfur 및 M. globosa 증식을 억제함으로써, 지루성 두피 염증의 예방과 효과적인 관리 제품의 소재로서 활용가치가 높음을 알 수 있다.

In Vitro Apoptosis Triggering in the BT-474 Human Breast Cancer Cell Line by Lyophilised Camel's Milk

  • Breast cancer is a global health concern and is a major cause of death among women. In Oman, it is the most common cancer in women, with an incidence rate of 15.6 per 100,000 Omani females. Various anticancer remedies have been discovered from natural products in the past and the search is continuing for additional examples. Cytotoxic natural compounds may have a major role in cancer therapy either in potentiating the effect of chemotherapy or reducing its harmful effects. Recently, a few studies have reported advantages of using crude camel milk in treating some forms of cancer. However, no adequate data are available on the lyophilised camel's milk responsibility for triggering apoptosis and oxidative stress associated with human breast cancer. The present study aimed to address the role of the lyophilised camel's milk in inducing proliferation repression of BT-474 and HEp-2 cells compared with the non-cancer HCC1937 BL cell line. Lyophilized camel's milk fundamentally repressed BT-474 cells growth and proliferation through the initiation of either the intrinsic and extrinsic apoptotic pathways as indicated by both caspase-3 mRNA and its action level, and induction of death receptors in BT-474 but not the HEp-2 cell line. In addition, lyophilised camel's milk enhanced the expression of oxidative stress markers, heme-oxygenase-1 and reactive oxygen species production in BT-474 cells. Increase in caspase-3 mRNA levels by the lyophilised camel's milk was completely prevented by the actinomycin D, a transcriptional inhibitor. This suggests that lyophilized camel's milk increased newly synthesized RNA. Interestingly,it significantly (p<0.003) repressed the growth of HEp-2 cells and BT-474 cells after treatment for 72 hours while 24 hours treatment repressed BT-474 cells alone. This finding suggests that the lyophilised camel's milk might instigate apoptosis through initiation of an alternative apoptotic pathway.

파골세포 분화에 미치는 복분자 물 추출물의 효과 (Effect of Water Extract of Rubi Fructus in RANKL-induced Osteoclast Differentiation)

  • To prevent and treat the osteoporotic fracture, more attention should be paid in old age patients. Osteoclast which has ability to bone resorption is originated from hematopoietic cell line and plays a key role osteoporotic bone loss. Rubi Fructus has been widely used in Oriental medicine. Extracts of the leaves and fruit of Rubus species have been used in various countries as natural remedies to treat diabetes, infections, colic, and burns. However, the effect of extract of Rubi Fructus (fruit of Rubus coreanus Miq.) in osteoclast differentiation remains unknown. Thus, we evaluated the effect of Rubi Fructus on receptor activator of nuclear factor-kB ligand (RANKL)-induced osteoclast differentiation. Here we found that Rubi Fructus significantly inhibited osteoclast differentiation induced by RANKL. Rubi Fructus suppressed the activation of p38 pathway and NFkB in bone marrow macrophages (BMMs) treated with RANKL. Also, Rubi Fructus significantly inhibited the mRNA expression of c-Fos, tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP), osteoclast-associated receptor (OSCAR), nuclear factor of activated T cells (NFAT)c1 and cathepsin K in BMMs treated with RANKL. Particularly, Rubi Fructus greatly inhibited the protein expression of c-fos and NFATc1. especially in the case of NFATc1 expression, a master transcription factor of the differentiation of osteoclasts is very important step for osteoclastogenesis. Taken together, our results demonstrated that Rubi Fructus may be useful treatment option of bone-related disease such as osteoporosis and rheumatoid arthritis.

임상에서 분리한 메치실린 내성 황색포도상구균에 대한 녹나무잎 추출물의 항균활성 (Synergistic Effects of Cinnamomum camphora Leaves Extract against Clinical Isolated Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus)

  • 메치실린내성 황색포도상구균(MRSA)은 가장 중요한 지역 사회 병원성 균주의 하나로서 항생제 내성 문제가 세계적으로 대두되고 있다. 감염 치료에 대한 부작용과 내성이 적은 새로운 항생제의 개발에 많은 관심과 연구가 필요하다. Cinnamomum camphora는 제주도에서 자생하는 녹나무과의 식물이다. 민간에서는 신경 쇠약, 간질, 방광염, 신우 신염, 당뇨, 암과 당뇨병 치료제로 이용되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 80% 에탄올을 이용하여 녹나무잎을 추출물하여 임상에서 분리한 메치실린 내성 균주에 대한 항균활성을 연구하였다. 그 결과 녹나무잎 추출물에서 높은 항균활성을 관찰 할 수 있었고, 항생제와의 병용처리 녹나무잎 추출물의 MIC와 MBC의 범위는 $156-313{\mu}g/ml$$313-625{\mu}g/ml$로 판독되었고, oxacillin의 병용처리의 범위는 $1288-256{\mu}g/ml$$128-512{\mu}g/ml$, 그리고 ampicillin의 병용처리 범위는 ${\mu}g/ml$$8-128{\mu}g/ml$로 판독되었다. 녹나무잎 추출물과 항생제의 병용처리는 MRSA 항균활성에 대한 상승효과가 높게 나타났다.

보건계열 대학생의 지식재산 교육에 관한 인식도 및 요구도 (Awareness and needs for intellectual property education among health-related department university students)

  • 연구목적: 본 연구는 보건의료계열 전공 대학생들을 대상으로 지식재산 교육에 대한 인식도와 요구도를 측정하여 향후 지식재산 교육 과정 개발 시 반영하기 위한 목적으로 수행되었다. 연구방법: 본 연구는 충청남도 C시에 소재하고 있는 D대학교 보건계열(물리치료학과, 보건행정학과, 임상병리학과, 치위생학과) 재학생을 대상으로 2024년 1월 5일부터 2024년 1월 26일까지 온라인 설문조사를 실시하였고 151명이 설문에 참여하였다. 연구결과: 응답자의 84.8%는 여학생이었으며, 보건행정학과와 치위생학과 전공자가 각 32.5%로 가장 많았다. 응답자의 13.9%만이 지식재산 관련 교과목을 수강한 경험이 있었고, 이와 관련된 활동 경험은 22.5%로 나타났다. 보건계열 대학생의 지식재산 교육 중요도의 평균 점수는3.88(±0.80)점이며, 요구도의 평균 점수는 3.78(±0.80)점이었다. IPA Matrix분석을 실시한 결과, 1사분면(높은 중요도, 높은 요구도)에 13개 주제, 2사분면(낮은 중요도, 높은 요구도)에 1개 주제, 3사분면(낮은 중요도, 낮은 요구도)에 18개 주제, 4사분면(높은 중요도, 낮은 요구도)에 4개 주제가 포함되었다. 1사분면에 위치한 교육 주제는 '특허권 확보', '특허 등록 요건', '특허권의 효력', '특허 침해 및 구제', '저자권의 효력' 등으로 나타났다. 결론: 향후 지식재산 교육과정 운영에서 대학생들의 흥미와 관심을 높일 수 있도록 중요도와 요구도를 고려한 교육 콘텐츠 개발 및 혁신 교육방법이 적용되어야 한다.

인천시 도시복원하천 장수천의 저서성대형무척추동물의 군집구조에 관한 연구 (Study on the Community Structure of Benthic Macro-Invertebrates in Jangsu-cheon, an Urban Restoration Stream of Incheon City)

  • 인천광역시 관내에 분포하는 하천 중 시민의 이용 빈도가 높은 장수천을 대상으로 자연형 하천 조성에 따른 영향 및 개선방안을 도출하기 위해 연구를 수행하였으며, 이를 위해 2008년 12월에 준공된 장수천에 대하여 조사 및 분석을 실시하였다. 장수천 수계에 대해 3개 지점을 대상으로 총 3차년도(2009, 2010, 2014)에 걸쳐 조사한 결과 총 3문 5강 11목 26과 56종 980개체의 저서성대형무척추동물이 분포하는 것으로 조사되었다. 이를 각 연차별로 분석해 보면 자연형 하천 공사 직후인 2009년에 18과 30종, 공사 후 2년차인 2010년에는 22과 37종으로 7종이 증가한 것으로 조사되었으며, 이후 2014년 조사 결과 22과 38종으로 2010년 회복 후 안정화 단계에 들어선 것으로 볼 수 있다. 이는 장수천 자연형 하천 조성사업으로 인해 하천 수환경의 개선이 이루어진 것을 확인 할 수 있었으며, 아울러, 장수천의 경우 상류부 지역의 인천대공원 내 양호한 습지지역의 지속적인 유지 관리 노력으로 인해 양호한 생태환경을 보여주고 있으며, 장수천 자연형 하천조성 사업과 함께 긍정적 효과를 내고 있는 것으로 확인되었다.
