It has long been speculated that the visual system should use a coding strategy that takes advantage of statistical redundancies in images. But how such a coding strategy should manifest in neural responses has been less clear. Low-level image structure related to the power spectrum of natural images appears to be captured by a hard-wired efficient code in the retina of the fly and precortical structures like the LGN of cats that maximizes information content through the limited capacity channel of the optic nerve. But visual images are typically filled with higher-order structure beyond that captured by the power spectrum and visual cortex is not constrained by the same capacity limits as the optic nerve. Whether and how visual cortex can flexibly code for higher order redundancies is unknown. Here we show using psychophysical techniques that the neural response in early human visual cortex may be modulated by orientation redundancies in images such that a visual feature that is contained within a predictive pattern results in slower reaction times than a feature that deviates from a pattern, suggesting lower neural responses to predictable stimuli in the visual cortex. Our results point to a neural response in early visual cortex that is sensitive to global patterns and redundancies in visual images and is in marked contrast to standard models of cortical visual processing.
A green spectrophotometric method for the determination of cyanide has been proposed using, a green reagent, aqueous extract of blue butterfly pea. The test tube was filled with anthocyanin rich extract (pH 6) and cyanide solution. The reaction was kept constant for 10 minutes at room temperature. The reaction mixture changed color from blue to green as the amount of CN-ions increased. The 620 nm peak intensity increased with CN concentration. Therefore, this wavelength was used for all cyanide analyses. The cyanide calibration curve had a linear range of 0.25-1.00, 1.00-4.00, and 4.00-10.00 mg/L, with a satisfactory correlation coefficient of 0.99 and a LOD of 0.57 mg/L. The recovery ranged from 8.33 to 76.94 percent, indicating that this method is inaccurate at low cyanide concentrations. The intra-day and intermediate precision relative deviations were 0.391-0.871 % and 1.112-1.583 %. An H-bond forms between the C-4 group of the B-carbonyl ring and the HCN molecule according to the B3LYP/TZVP calculation. The method is convenient for cyanide concentrations above the LOQ of 1.09 mg/L, cost-effective, and capable of reducing toxic solvents with acceptable precision. The method could also be used to detect total cyanide in biological, environmental, and industrial waste samples.
In this paper, we consider the asymptotic behavior of solutions for the partly dissipative reaction diffusion systems of the FitzHugh-Nagumo type with hereditary memory and a very large class of nonlinearities, which have no restriction on the upper growth of the nonlinearity. We first prove the existence and uniqueness of weak solutions to the initial boundary value problem for the above-mentioned model. Next, we investigate the existence of a uniform attractor of this problem, where the time-dependent forcing term h ∈ L2b(ℝ; H-1(ℝN)) is the only translation bounded instead of translation compact. Finally, we prove the regularity of the uniform attractor A, i.e., A is a bounded subset of H2(ℝN) × H1(ℝN) × L2µ(ℝ+, H2(ℝN)). The results in this paper will extend and improve some previously obtained results, which have not been studied before in the case of non-autonomous, exponential growth nonlinearity and contain memory kernels.
A carbon composite was synthesized by mechanical mixing of ball-milled graphite and PVC powders, followed by pyrolysis reaction of PVC. Natural graphite ball milled under atmosphere of argon or air leads to a disordered structure. It appears that the electrochemical lithium intercalation reaction is dependent on the atmosphere in which the graphite is ball milled. The carbon composite obtained using air-milled graphite shows a high reversible capacity and high initial coulombic efficiency compared to argon-milled graphite. This is attributed to the enhanced thermal stability of a disordered structure in the air milled sample. For the one with air-milled graphite, the disordered structure is maintained during heat treatment, while argon-milled graphite is partially crystallized.
In recent years, there has been considerable interest in the development of new functional surfactant including new type of anionic surfactants. Anionic surfactants, ${\alpha}-sulfo$ fatty acids that straight long chain alkyl group having from 12 to 18 carbon atoms, were synthesized with sulfur trioxide-dioxane complex to good yield. Xylitol ${\alpha}-sulfo$ fatty acid esters were obtained by reaction that the acetification and esterification of xylitol, by addition reaction with sodium chloride and hydrolysis respectively. These compounds were a new group of destructible surfactants which readily hydrolyzed and oxidized in natural water reservoirs. Physical properties of these new compounds involved surface tension, critical micelle concentration(cmc), foaming power, emulsion power, and hydrolysis properties, were measured. The cmc values of the compounds by ring method were assumed to $7.0{\times}10^{-3}{\sim}3.0{\times}10^{-2}mol/{\ell}$ range and surface tensions at cmc were $25{\sim}31dyne/cm$ respectively.

The presenet research attempts to examine the combustion characteristics and the structure of the flame in turbulent premixed flames and thus enhance the combustion performance that leads to the design of the effective combustion system (untilizing LNG). Following experimental investigations for several stabilized premixed flames were attempted to identify the interactive mechanism between flame structures and flow fields; Visualization by Schlieren method, measurement of flow velocity by LDV, detection of ion current by ion probe, measurement of fluctuating temperature by thermocouple having compensation circuit, average values with respect to time of fluctuating amount for flow velocity, temperature, ion current, etc., variable RMS values, PDFs, autocorrelation, crosscorrelation, spatial macroscale, power spectra, and velocity scale. Continuing the authors published studies whose flame dominated by coherent structures and the characteristics of combustion reaction for irregular three dimensional flame and stabilized flame by step were investigated with obtained experimental quantities. Results of this research are following : The most turbulent flames support the structure of a Wrinkled laminar flame or laminar flamelets. It also observed that combustion reaction is related to small tubulence microscales of the turbulent flow fields closly.
An investigation was conducted to find out formation and is mechanism of kaolinite from pyrophyllite under hydrothermal conditions. First, a pyropyllite sample from the Heenam district, Korea, was activated by heat-treating at $400^{\circ}C$ for 3 hrs. The kaolinite powder was successfully obtained by subjecting the dried feedstock to autoclaving at $200^{\circ}C$, 15atm, pH<1 for 5days with addition of 17.4mol/l $AlCl_3$. Evidently, the $AlCl_3$ addition as a mineralizer strongly promoted incorporation of $Al^{3+}$ ion into pyrophyllite structure which was subdequently converted into kaolinite. It also indicated that the formation of octahedral feed solution. The final pH of the solution was decreased to ~0.3. The transformation reaction was not noticeably accelerated when 10wt% natural kaolinite was added as the seeds, suggesting that the transformation was not reconstructional, but substitutional type.
Explosive chemicals have been major soil and groundwater contaminants especially in the nations with active military activities. Of these explosives, 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) is the most refractory one due to its structural characteristics. Although its efficient reduction by Fe(0) is well-known, the reduction products - mainly aminotoluenes - still possess toxicities to terrestrial biota, and are resistant to biological degradation. In this study, therefore, abiotic transformation of TNT reduction products via oxidative-coupling reaction was evaluated using Mn oxide which is ubiquitous in natural soils. The transformation efficiency is increased with the number of amino groups. Considering the very efficient reduction rate of TNT by Fe(0), Mn oxide can be successfully used for the removal of TNT reduction products.
The chemical method and mortar-bar method for identification of the susceptibility to Alkali-Aggregate Reaction (AAR) was established as KS method by referencing the ASTM methods. However, the chemical method requires skilled chemical engineers and aggregates are tested in very severe condition, and on the other hand, the mortar-bar method needs a long time of 3 or 6 months. Judging from this circumstance that the use of crushed stones are increased due to the shortage of natural aggregates, the development and standardization of a new rapid test method is considered essential. The purpose of this paper is to research for the possibility to apply the rapid method, instead of the chemical method and the mortar-bar method with using the several domestic crushed stones.
The immune system is comprised of cells and molecules whose collective and coordinated response to the introduction of foreign substance is referred to as the immune response. Defense against microbes is mediated by the early reaction (innate immunity) and the late response (adaptive immunity). Innate immunity consists of the epithelial barrier, phagocytes, complement and natural killer cells. Adaptive immunity, a more complex defense reaction, consists of activation of later-developed lymphocytes that, when stimulated by exposure to infectious agents, increase in magnitude and defensive capabilities with each successive exposure. In this review we discuss recent advances in important primary immune deficiency disorders of innate immunity (chronic granulomatous disease, leukocyte adhesion deficiency) and adaptive immunity (severe combined immune deficiency, Wiskott- Aldrich syndrome).
