This study was performed to produce basic data for silty reclaimed tidal lands and to develop techniques of environmentally-friendly utilization in agricultural system. We chose the two sites in Saemangeum reclaimed tidal lands, one (Site I) has been treated with cultivating green manure and conducting the desalinization process through submergence since April, 2007 and the other (Site II) has been under natural condition without artificial treatment. In situ and ex situ physic-chemical properties were determined and comparisons were made for soil profiles examined at these two sites in April 2009. Surface soil of Site I had lower EC and higher field saturated hydraulic conductivity than those of Site II, uncultivated land. Especially, exchangeable sodium content was lowest in Site I Ap1 layer than in other layers. This is probably due to flooding desalination and green manure cultivation. Besides, Ap1 and A2 layers of soil profile in Site I showed brighter soil color and more root observation than those of Site II. This is probably due to green manure cultivation. By the large, for high cash upland crops and intensive agricultural use of silty reclaimed tidal land, site-specific soil ripening such as flooding desalination and green manure cultivation could be useful.
A monitoring system for a field magnetometer was configured with assistance of a Raspberry Pi as a data logger. The suggested geomagnetic system uses a semi-real-time data transmission module. The system consists of two parts: a field-observation part and a data-center part. The field-observation part comprises a Raspberry Pi, magnetometer, LTE router, and power source, while the data center part takes samples at the site. The collected magnetometer data are then sent to the data center through the LTE router. The newly designed monitoring system was deployed and checked in Jeju-do island, and found to operate stably. The suggested system is promising in that it is simple and cost saving, providing at least physical insight and knowledge on the complex natural phenomena.

Neulgeori prehistoric site is located at Joong-ri Kwanin-myon Pocheon-si, Gyeonggi-do, where lots of stone artefacts were excavated. We investigated the petrological features of the artefacts through petrographical observation and modal analysis. In addition we estimated the provenance of the artefacts by means of the geological survey. The twelve stone artefacts used in this study are identified as ash tuff, lapilli tuff, granite porphyry, andesite and diorite porphyry. Various rocks were used for making flakes, whereas blades and debris were from the tuffaceous rocks. Lapilli tuff is considered to have been delivered from the Dongmakgol tuff in the Cheolwon basin, granite porphyry from the Cretaceous granite porphyry stocks cropped out at the southeastern Oksan-ri and eastern Yeoncheon areas. Andesite artefact would have been originated from the outcrops located at the northern part of the site, and diorite porphyry artefact from the southern part of the site. The stone artefacts investigated are estimated to have been transported from the area within 15 kilometers from the site.
High spatio-temporal resolution hydrologic components can give important information to monitor natural disaster. The objective of this study is to create high spatial-temporal resolution gridded hydrologic components using TOPLATS distributed land surface model and evaluate their accuracy. For this, Andong dam basin is selected as study area and TOPLATS model is constructed to create hourly simulated values in every $1{\times}1km^2$ cell size. The observed inflow at Andong dam and soil moisture at Andong AWS site are collected to directly evaluate the simulated one. RMSEs of monthly simulated flow for calibration (2003~2006) and verification (2007~2009) periods show 36.87 mm and 32.41 mm, respectively. The hourly simulated soil moisture in the cell located Andong observation site for 2009 is well fitted with observed one at -50 cm. From this results, the cell based hydrologic components using TOPLATS distributed land surface model show to reasonably represent the real hydrologic condition in the field. Therefore the model driven hydrologic information can be used to analyze local water balance and monitor natural disaster caused by the severe weather.

This study investigated the effect of high-rise buildings on the preference for rural landscapes. The study site was a Seoul suburban, Yong-in, which showed typical scenes of rural development. Slides used in the study were taken in Young-in along the national road 45(north-south) and national road 42(east-west). Forty slides reflecting typical characters of Young-in were selected. Among them, ten slides which were selected through factor analysis based on “ruralits”score were used as original slides. They represent ten landscape types. The simulation of original slides was based on the following aspects: a observation distance. number of buildings and landscape types. The preferences for the landscapes were tested by 200 respondents on 40 slides: Distance(2) ${\times}$ Landscape type(10) = 20 slides, Number of buildings(2) ${\times}$ Landscape type(10) = 20 slides. The following results are found: 1) When high-rise buildings are introduced into rural scenes, there are some vulnerable landscape types: the landscape with high “rurality”, the landscape with background skyline and the focal landscape. 2) The observation distance affects landscape preference. The hypothesis that the nearer the distance the lower the preferences, is accepted. However, there are some exceptions in 3 landscape types. 3) The hypothesis that the more the number of buildings, the lower the preferences, is rejected. The result is quite unexpected one. When a single building is introduced in natural scene, it draws more attention as a focal point than a group of buildings, and subsequently the visual impact is stronger.
A strategy is needed for a regional survey of geosynchronous orbits (GSOs) to monitor known space objects and detect uncataloged space objects. On the basis of the Inter-Agency Debris Committee's recommendation regarding the protected region of geosynchronous Earth orbit (GEO), target satellites with perigee and apogee of $GEO{\pm}200km$ and various inclinations are selected for analysis. The status of the GSO region was analyzed using the satellite distribution based on the orbital characteristics in publicly available two-line element data. Natural perturbation effects cause inactive satellites to drift to two stable longitudinal points. Active satellites usually maintain the designed positions as a result of regular or irregular maneuver operations against their natural drift. To analyze the detection rate of a single optical telescope, 152 out of 412 active satellites and 135 out of 288 inactive satellites in the GSO region were selected on the basis of their visibility at the observation site in Daejeon, Korea. By using various vertical view ranges and various numbers of observations of the GSO region, the detection efficiencies were analyzed for a single night, and the numbers of follow-up observations were determined. The orbital estimation accuracies were also checked using the arc length and number of observed data points to maintain the GSO satellite catalog.

This study was aimed to propose the plan of creating a biotope reflecting an ecological education as well as its function as the habitats of amphibian in Namsan Urban Natural Park in Seoul. There were Cheonil mineral spring area which was located on the southern side of Namsan, wetlands which was already created on the east valley(800$m^2$) and a buffer area of the circumference(1,100$m^2$) as the biotope sites. Major fields of this study include a survey of the staus, a basic plan, a master plan; a survey of this site was focused on topography, water system, existing vegetation, wildbird, amphibian, trail; a detailed plan was focused on flow plan, planting plan, facility plan. Existing vegetation was classified into 8 types; Pinus densiflora forest, Pinus densiflora planted area, Prunus sargentii-Quercus spp. forest, Pinus rigida forest, Robinia pseudoacacia forest, artificial green space, wetlands, south beltway. There were Pinus densiflora planted area and Prunus sargentii-Quercus spp. forest as major vegetations of this site. 14 species and 33 individuals of wildbirds appeared, Rana temporaria ornativentris and Hynobius leechi were investigated in the wetlands. In particular, habitats of amphibian were divided eco-zone, buffer-zone and restore-zone, and habitats and facilities which would be suitable for the characteristics of each space were planned. As a result, environment elements of good habitats including spawn wetlands of amphibian, harbor of amphibian, water plant of wetland, wild shrubs forest, ecological landscape forest, wetland observation trail, fence of wetland protection and ramp by pebble and log were created at the site. The amphibian biotope of Namsan is rated high as an important space for conserving biodiversity. Accordingly, continuous monitoring of this biotope as a urban habitat is required as the environment changes.
In case of Typhoon Dianmu, the temperature, wind speed, wind direction and the rainfall per hour changed dramatically when the center of the typhoon passed through Gimhae. Such a change was commonly found in the regions where the center of the typhoon passed through but almost not in the regions far away from it. For example, in the case of Typhoon Malou where the center of the typhoon was far away from the observation site, such a phenomenon was not observed. The analysis of the vertical observation data showed that there was a little change in the wind speed and wind direction in the vertical direction in the case of Typhoon Dianmu of which center passed through Gimhae. There was a great change in the wind speed according to the height in the lower atmosphere just before the center of the typhoon approached the region. When the center of the typhoon was passing through the region, the vertical wind speed was decreased. However, the wind speed was rapidly increased again after the center of the typhoon had passed through the region. Unlike the Dianmu, the difference in the wind speed and wind direction between the upper layer and lower layer of the atmosphere was relatively great in the case of Malou.

This paper presents a hydraulic performance graph model in which the flow carrying capacity of a channel system was determined by accounting the interacting backwater effect among channel reaches and incoming lateral flow. The method utilizes hydraulic performance graphs (HPGs), and the method is applied to a natural channel Nakdong River to examine its applicability. This research shows that estimation results using HPG are close to records from the stage station and the results from a widely-accepted model, HEC-RAS. Assuming that a water level gage site is ungaged, water level estimations by HPGs compared with observation show that with a flood event, the HPGs underestimate in the water level ascension phase, but in the recession phase they overestimate results. The accuracy of estimation with HPGs was greatly improved by considering the time difference of flooding between the observation and estimation locations.
