  • The taxonomy of marine littoral species of the genus Medon Stephens in Korea is presented. The genus and two species-Medon prolixus (Sharp) and M. rubeculus Sharp-are identified for the first time in the Korean Peninsula. Redescriptions of M. prolixus and M. rubeculus with an illustration of its habitus and line drawings are provided.

  • Severe childhood asthma is a complicated and heterogeneous disorder with distinct phenotypes. Children with severe asthma have more persistent symptoms despite receiving treatment, more atopy, greater airway obstruction, and more air trapping than those with mild-to-moderate asthma. They also have higher morbidity and substantial airflow limitations that persist throughout adulthood. Identification of the phenotype clusters and endotypes of severe asthma can allow further modulation of the natural history of severe asthma and may provide the pathophysiologic rationale for appropriate management strategies.

  • We performed a taxonomic study on two species of the genus Bryoria from the Sino-Himalayas, SW-China. B, nadvornikiana is new to China and B. furcellata is new to Yunnan and Sichuan provinces in the Sino-Himalayas. Morphology, habitat, distributions and chemistry of the two species are discussed.

  • Taxonomic and phylogenetic studies of firefly in Japan have been reviewed. Fourty-six lampyrid species and one rhagophthalmid are distributed in the Japanese Islands including the Ryukyus. Recently, molecular phylogenetic approaches have been employed in the systematic study of firefly using mitochondrial and luciferase genes. Based on the molecular phylogenetic trees, evolutionary process of flashing patterns related strictly to mating behavior was estimated. Furthermore, genetic diversity studies revealed geographic differentiation patterns within species, and conservation measures of firefly were proposed to protect genetic resources endemic to the localities.

  • A new species of Anaxyrina Meyrick, A. albicostalis sp. novo (Lepidoptera, Lecithoceridae, Torodorinae) is described from Thailand and the Philippines. The genus has been known only by the type species, A. cyanopa Meyrick from N. India. Image of adult, forewing venation and illustrations of the male genitalia with aedeagus for the new species are provided.

  • China is rich in plant resources of various species. There are more than 3000 kinds of flowering plants distributed widely in the country. Throughout China's long history, many plants have been using for treatment of various diseases and playing very important role to support social civilization and prosperity. As present understanding, Chinese medicinal plants are rich sources of discovering and developing new natural drugs and lead compounds in China. To make the use of Chinese medicinal plants more scientific and more rational, its fundamental research should be strengthened, including studies on chemical constituents, pharmacological effects and its action mechanism.

  • Located 60 km from southern tip of Korean peninsula, Jeju is the largest Island in Korea and composed of volcanic habitat. Twenty-eight species of terrestrial mammals are listed from Jeju Island, of which 1 species and 3 subspecies are endemic. Also, 1 endangered species and 4 invasive alien species of land mammals are listed. Current status, brief history, management and conservation of the 28 species are discussed.
